Men’s Basketball – 3-5
(Landmark Conference 1-0)
Sophomore guard Maurice
Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) scored a game high 19 points
including the winning lay-up with 1:26 to lead Moravian to a 61-59
non-conference victory at Swarthmore College.
The Garnet led early at 11-6 with 14:25 to go. Moravian responded with a 25-9 run to take
the largest lead of the game at 11 points, 31-20, after a three-pointer from
freshman guard Sergio Camacho
(Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) with 4:41 to go in the first half. The Greyhounds headed to the locker room with
a 35-29 lead. Moravian connected on ten
of 29 field goal attempts (34.5 percent) in the first 20 minutes, but the
Greyhounds were five-for-14 behind the three-point line and ten-for-13 at the
foul line in the first half. Moravian
also committed just six turnovers in the first half while forcing Swarthmore
into 13 turnovers. The Garnet, who had a
21-15 advantage in rebounds in the first 20 minutes, were ten-for-23 from the
floor, two-for-seven on three-pointers and seven-for-11 at the foul line. Moravian held the lead through the first 12
and a half minutes of the second half with a lead as big as eight points and as
small as one point until Swarthmore tied the game at 50-50 with 7:24 to go on a
fast break jumper. The bucket was part
of an 8-0 run by the Garnet. Swarthmore
would have a five-point lead, 57-52, after a three-pointer by Matt Allen with
4:47 to go, but the Moravian defense would allow just a pair of free throws to
Swarthmore the rest of the way as the Greyhounds had a 9-2 run to finish the
game. The Greyhounds were ten-for-25
from the field (40 percent) in the second half, and the squad was three-for-13
on three-pointers and just three-for-four at the foul line. Moravian committed nine turnovers in the
second half. Swarthmore tossed in 11 of
28 second half field goal attempts, and the Garnet were perfect at the foul
line, four-for-four in the final 20 minutes while making four of 12 three-pointers. Swarthmore had a 27-31 edge in rebounds for
the game while committing 19 total turnovers.
Young added four rebounds and
three steals to his 19 points while senior forward Dave Bowden (Beachwood, NJ/The Toms River
School) had a career high ten points to go with three rebounds and three
assists off of the Moravian bench. Camacho tossed in nine points, all on
three-pointers while sophomore guard Charlie
Rigoglioso (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) had seven
points, three assists and three steals. Junior
forward Joseph Munley
(Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) had a team high seven rebounds to go with two
steals and a point while Moravian’s leading scorer junior forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS)
was held to just a point and had five boards.
Sophomore forward Chris Cullen
(East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) added six points and four rebounds while
sophomore forward Alvin Adams (Newark,
NJ/Marist HS) had four points and three boards.
Junior guard Vinnie Darpino scored eight of his game-high 15
points during a decisive 16-2 run on the second half, and he hit the winning
shot with 1:32 left in the contest to lead the Kean University to a 60-58
come-from-behind win at Moravian in non-conference action. The Greyhounds scored first on a jumper from
sophomore guard Maurice Young, and
after just a brief tie at 2-2, Moravian would run out to a 10-4 lead on a trio
of free throws from freshman guard Sergio
Camacho at the 14:04 mark. Kean
answered with a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 11-10 with 10:18
to play in the first half. Moravian took
the lead back on a jumper by freshman guard/forward Nelson Leon (Reading, PA/Reading HS) only to see the Cougars go on
a 13-2 run to take a 24-14 lead, the first double digit lead of the game, with
4:32 until the intermission. The
Greyhounds answered back with a 9-2 run to cut the Kean lead to 26-23 on a pair
of free throws from junior forward Eric
Weaver at the 1:15 mark. The teams
headed to the locker room with Kean leading 28-23 after the Cougars shot 13 of
24 from the floor (54.2 percent) and two of three on three-pointers in the
first 20 minutes. Moravian was just
seven of 25 from the field (28 percent) and two-for-13 behind the three-point
line in the first half. The Greyhounds
were a perfect nine-for-nine at the foul line in the first 20 minutes while
Kean didn’t attempt a free throw. Moravian
had a 16-13 edge on the rebounds; however, Moravian had 13 turnovers while the
Cougars committed 12 turnovers in the first half. Sophomore forward Chris Cullen tossed in a three-pointer to start the second half for
the Greyhounds to tie the game at 28-28.
Kean would lead 32-30 with 16:31 remaining. Moravian then went on a 15-2 run to build a
45-34 lead after a put back jumper from sophomore forward Alvin Adams with 11:16 remaining.
Moravian went cold at that point missing seven straight shot and
committing two turnovers as Kean went on its 16-2 run to take the lead at 47-45
with 7:35 to go. The Greyhounds tied the
score at 47-47 on a pair of Young
free throws before Kean ran out to a 56-51 lead. Moravian would tie the game at 58-58 with
2:05 remaining on a pair of Weaver
free throws after a technical foul. Darpino would hita running lay-up
in the lane with 1:32 to play to cap off the scoring. Young
had a three-point attempt with four seconds remaining to win the game for
Moravian but was short of the rim. Moravian scored its final field goal with
4:24 remaining on a tip in by Weaver. The Greyhounds were five of six at the foul
line from that point on; however, the team was zero-for-nine from the floor
despite grabbing five offensive rebounds.
Kean’s shooting cooled in the second half as the Cougars made 14 of 35
field goal attempts (40 percent), one of four three-pointers and three-for-five
free throws in the final 20 minutes. Moravian contributed to struggle from the
field, making just eight of 35 field goals (22.9 percent) and three of 15
three-pointers in the second half. The
free throw line would keep the Greyhounds in the contest as Moravian made 14 of
16 free throws in the second half, and the Greyhounds made and attempt 20 more
free throws than Kean in the game.
Moravian finished the contest with a 44-39 advantage on the boards while
both teams had 19 turnovers for the game.

Women’s Basketball -- 6-1
(Landmark Conference 1-0)
Moravian team overcame poor shooting from the field by
going 19-for-20 from the foul line in the final 25 minutes including a
ten-for-ten performance from junior guard Jessica
Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS), who had 17
points in the game, to rally to a 73-68 overtime non-conference victory over
NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania in Johnston Hall. The win was the fourth straight for the
Greyhounds, who are ranked 23rd in the nation in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches’ Top
25 poll, and Moravian improves to 6-1 overall.
The Greyhounds have come-from-behind in their last three games, and have
trailed at halftime in five of their seven contests, winning four. This was the second straight year the two
schools have played, and the second consecutive season, the visiting had a
double digit lead and lost in overtime.
Last winter, Moravian led by 19 points but eventually dropped a 96-89
decision in overtime at East Stroudsburg.
In tonight’s game, The Warriors had a 25-15 lead with 7:20 to go in the
first half, only to suffer the loss. The
Greyhounds opened the scoring with a three-point play by junior forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS). There would be four lead changes and three
ties until Moravian took a 14-12 lead on a lay-up from junior forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS)
at the 13:08 mark. From that point, East
Stroudsburg went on a 13-1 run to give the Warriors their 25-15 lead. Moravian would respond with a 10-0 run to tie
the game at 25-25 with 4:55 to go in the first half on a Stearns three-pointer. The
Greyhounds were unable to get the lead back in the first half, heading to the
locker room trailing 32-30 despite having two field goal attempts and three
free throws in the final 12 seconds of the half. The Greyhounds struggled shooting the ball in
the first 20 minutes, making just 12 of 36 field goal attempts (32.3 percent),
three of seven three-pointers and three of eight free throws. Moravian did have a 25-17 advantage in
rebounds in the first half including 15-5 on the offensive boards but the
Greyhounds were unable to take advantage of all the second chances. Moravian has eight turnovers in the first 20
minutes while East Stroudsburg committed seven turnovers. The Warriors were hot from the floor in the
first half, making 13 of 25 field goal attempts (52 percent), one of three
three-pointers and five of nine free throws.
Junior guard Amanda Brown
(Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) hit a three-pointer to start the
second half, giving Moravian a 33-32 lead.
However, East Stroudsburg responded with a 7-0 run to rebuild a
six-point lead, 39-33. Trailing 42-36,
the Greyhounds put together a 9-2 run to take a 45-44 lead on a three-pointer
from freshman guard Hilary Murray (Clinton,
NJ/North Hunterdon HS) at the 10:47 mark.
The Greyhounds would lead 47-45 after a turnaround jumper in the lane
from freshman forward Alexandra Blair
(Hellertown, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) at the 8:27 mark but that would be
Moravian’s last lead until overtime.
From that point, the game was tied five times or East Stroudsburg held a
lead with the Warriors largest lead of five points, 59-54, coming at the 3:38
mark. Moravian trailed 64-60 with a
minute left in regulation. Foran, the
leading free throw shooter by percentage in Moravian’s history, then hit a pair
of free throws with 43 seconds left to pull the Greyhounds within two. Moravian forced a turnover and Bisci would connect on a pair of free
throws to tie the game at 64-64 with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. Foran had a running three-point attempt from the top of the
key as time expired but her shot bounced off of the rim. Moravian was just eight-for-26 from the floor
(30.8 percent) in the second 20 minutes, three of eight three-pointers and 15
of 16 free throws. East Stroudsburg was
ten-for-27 from the field, two-for-four behind the three-point line and ten of
12 at the foul line. Moravian started
the overtime session, the same way it started the second half with a Brown three-pointer to give Moravian a
67-64 edge. East Stroudsburg scored four
straight points to take a 68-67 lead with 3:11 to go in the extra session. That would be the last time the Warriors
scored. Foran would give the Greyhounds
the lead for good with a jumper at the2:43 remaining. Foran and Stearns
each hit a pair of free throws with under 15 seconds to play to ice the
victory. The Greyhounds were
two-for-five from the floor, one-for-two on three-pointers and a perfect
four-for-four at the foul line in the extra session. The Warriors were just two-for-nine from the
field in the overtime, and East Stroudsburg missed all three of its
three-pointers and did not make it to the foul line in the final five
minutes. Moravian did finish the game
with a 45-42 edge in rebounds, and the Greyhounds had 19 turnovers while
forcing East Stroudsburg into 21 turnovers.
Stearns had a team high 18
points for the Greyhounds, and she pulled down a game high 11 rebounds for her
first double-double of the season. Foran added four
rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists to her 17 points while Brown tossed in 12 points, all on
three-pointers, to go with three assists.

Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS) each has eight rebounds and seven points
for the Greyhounds with Harrison
dishing out a game high six assists.
Sophomore guard/forward Amy
Heffner (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland HS0 had six rebounds and five points
