Freshman David Kurvink lost to top seed and eventual champion Vlad Handl of King’s College, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals of the 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament to finish the Greyhounds season.

At 2000 MAC Individual Tournament hosted by Elizabethtown College

Freshman David Kurvink won a pair of matches after a first round bye to move into the semifinals of the 2000 Middle Atlantic Coonference Individual Tournament hosted by Elizabethtown College. Kurvink, the fourth seed in the singles flight, defeated Joe Connell of Lycoming, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round and seventh-seeded Mic Bender from Lebanon Valley College, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Fifth-seeded Chad Bender of Widener University, 6-2, 6-4, knocked Moravian junior Clay Smith out of the singles tournament in the first round. Both of the Greyhounds’ doubles teams reached the quarterfinals before falling out of the tournament. Senior Clay Wagner and freshman Todd Edwards received a first-round bye before defeating Mattery and Heinlein, 6-0, 6-0. Wagner and Edwards lost in the quarterfinals to the top-seeded team of Alter and Carreras from Drew University, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Dan Gorman and senior Jason Birli combined for a first round win over Rohela and Burns from Drew University 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). The duo also won its second round match over Gomez and Stankiewicz of Albright College, 6-2, 6-1. Gorman and Birli were knocked out of the Tournament in the quarterfinals by the second seed, Czerwonka and Height from Elizabethtown, 6-1, 6-1.

Vs. Ursinus College – Won 6-1

Seniors Clay Wagner and Jason Birli each earned wins in singles and doubles action in their final collegiate dual match as the Moravian College men’s tennis team defeated Ursinus College, 6-1, in non-conference action Wednesday. Moravian finishes the season with a 7-5 overall record. Freshman Todd Edwards also had wins in singles and doubles while freshman Dan Gorman had a singles victory and junior Clay Smith had a doubles win.

At Lebanon Valley College – Lost 7-0

The Greyhounds saw their Middle Atlantic Conference playoff chances slip away as the squad was swept, 7-0, by the 2000 MAC Commonwealth Conference Champion Lebanon Valley College in Moravian’s final MAC Commonwealth Conference match of the season. The Greyhounds only win of the match came at second doubles were the tandem of senior Clay Wagner and freshman Todd Edwards earned a 9-8 (10-8) win.

Vs. King’s College – Canceled

Due to a rain out at Drew University on Saturday, King’s College had to cancel its match with the Greyhounds. The match will not be rescheduled this season.

At Susquehanna University – Won 4-3

Freshman David Kurvink won a three-set match at first singles to give the Greyhounds a 4-3 victory over Susquehanna University in MAC Commonwealth Conference action. The win kept the Greyhounds alive for a MAC Playoff spot with on MAC Commonwealth Conference match remaining. Moravian also received singles wins from senior Clay Wagner, junior Clay Smith and freshman Dan Gorman on the afternoon. Smith and Kurvink combined for Moravian’s only doubles win against the Crusaders.

At Muhlenberg College – Lost 5-2

Junior Clay Smith and senior Jason Birli scored singles wins for the Greyhounds but it wasn’t enough as Moravian fell to rival Muhlenberg College, 5-2 in non-conference action.

Vs. Albright College – Won 5-2

The Greyhounds evened their MAC Commonwealth Conference record at 2-2 with a 5-2 victory over Albright College. Senior Clay Wagner, junior Clay Smith and freshman Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman each earned singles wins for Moravian. Wagner and Edwards teamed up for one doubles win while Smith partnered with freshman David Kurvink for another doubles victory.

Vs. University of Scranton – Postponed

The Greyhounds match with the University of Scranton was postponed due to snow and has not been rescheduled at this time.

Vs. Widener University – Won 7-0

Moravian earned its first MAC Commonwealth Conference win of the year, sweeping Widener University, 7-0. The win lifts the Greyhounds record to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the MAC Commonwealth Conference this season. Winning in singles for the Greyhounds were seniors Clay Wagner and Jason Birli, juniors Clay Smith and Chris Braun and freshmen David Kurvink and Dan Gorman. The teams of Birli and Braun, Smith and Kurvink, and Wagner and freshman Todd Edwards all won in doubles action as well.

At Allentown College – Won 5-2

In their first action in ten days, the Greyhounds earned a 5-2at Allentown with wins in singles action from freshmen David Kurvink and Dan Gorman, junior Clay Smith and senior Clay Wagner. Kurvink and Smith also combined for a doubles victory as did Wagner and freshman Todd Edwards.

At FDU-Madison – Won 6-1

The Greyhounds won five of six singles matches and also picked up a point in double play to defeat FDU-Madison in Middle Atlantic Conference action. The win snaps a three-match losing streak for the Greyhounds and improves the team’s overall record to 2-3. Earning singles wins for Moravian were freshmen David Kurvink and Dan Gorman, sophomore Chris Braun, junior Clay Smith and senior Clay Wagner. Wagner combined with freshman Todd Edwards for a win at second doubles while Gorman won at third doubles with sophomore Jeremy Kiechel.

Vs. Elizabethtown College – Lost 4-3

Freshmen David Kurvink and Dan Gorman each earned singles and doubles wins but it wasn’t enough as the Greyhounds dropped a 4-3 decision to Elizabethtown College in MAC Commonwealth Conference action. Moravian, now 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in the MAC Commonwealth, earned a point in doubles action by winning two of the three matches. Kurvink won at first doubles with junior Clay Smith while Gorman was victorious at third singles with sophomore Jeremy Kiechel.

At Messiah College – Lost 5-2

The Messiah College men’s tennis team earned victories at third through six singles and also garnered a point for two doubles win to lift the Falcons to a 5-2 triumph over Moravian College in MAC Commonwealth Conference action. Moravian, now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MAC Commonwealth Conference play, had victories in singles action from junior Clay Smith and freshman David Kurvink. The duo also combined for a win in doubles action.

Vs. Drew University – Lost 4-3

The Drew University men’s tennis team topped Moravian, 4-3, with a win in the final match by Dan Burns in Middle Atlantic Conference non-league action. The match took nearly five hours to play after being moved indoors due to Tuesday’s wet weather conditions. The Greyhounds, now 1-1 on the season, had singles wins from junior Clay Smith, senior Clay Wagner and freshman David Kurvink. Wagner teamed up with freshman Todd Edwards for a win in doubles action.

Vs. Wilkes University – Won 4-3

Behind singles and doubles victories by senior Clay Wagner and junior Clay Smith, the Moravian College men’s tennis team opened its 2000 season with a 4-3 victory over Wilkes University in Middle Atlantic Conference action. Also earning singles wins for the Greyhounds were senior Jason Birli and freshman Dan Gorman. Smith combined with freshman David Kurvink for a win in doubles while Wagner teamed up with freshman Todd Edwards for a victory.
