2000 Review

With three freshmen in the line-up, the Moravian College men’s tennis team came within one match of making the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs for the first time since 1997 and the squad posted a 7-5 record under the direction of head coach Jim Walker.

The Greyhounds started the year of at 1-3 before a four-match winning streak put Moravian over .500 for the remainder of the season.

Leading the team this spring for Walker was the tandem of junior Clay Smith (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) and freshman David Kurvink (Bethlehem/Liberty HS). Smith, who was knocked out of the MAC Individual Tournament in the first round, posted his first winning singles record in his Moravian career at 9-4. Smith was 3-1 at first singles and 6-2 at second singles. Smith earned a spot on the MAC Academic Honor Roll.

Kurvink, who reached the semifinals of the MAC Individual Tournament before losing to the eventual champion, posted a 9-5 record in his debut season including a 5-3 slate at first singles and a 2-1 record at second singles. The duo combined to give the Greyhounds a 7-5 record at first doubles this spring.

Freshman Dan Gorman (Saylorsburg/Pleasant Valley HS) posted an 8-4 slate in singles action this spring with a 6-4 mark at fifth singles. Gorman teamed up with senior Jason Birli (Quakertown/Quakertown HS) for a 2-4 doubles record with both wins coming in the MAC Individual Tournament. Gorman had a 3-0 doubles mark this spring with sophomore Jeremy Kiechel (Allentown/William Allen HS). Birli had a 4-4 singles record this season with a 2-0 slate at fifth singles.

Senior Clay Wagner (Havertown/Haverford HS) was 7-5 this season with a 6-4 slate at third singles to complete his Moravian career with a 22-24 singles record. Wagner played second doubles this spring with freshman Todd Edwards (Conyngham/Hazleton HS). The duo was 9-5 on the year after posting a 1-1 record in the MAC Individual Tournament and an 8-4 record during the regular season. Edwards played fourth singles this year and had a 2-9 record.

Junior Chris Braun (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg HS) posted a 2-3 singles mark this season for Moravian after going 7-5 as a sophomore. Senior Rob Frank (Bethlehem/Dover HS) had one singles win and he competed in one doubles match this year.

With four of his six singles and doubles players returning next season, Coach Walker looks to improve on this year’s 7-5 mark and advance to the MAC Playoffs.
