With three freshmen
in the line-up, the Moravian College mens tennis team came within one match of making
the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs for the first time since 1997 and the squad posted
a 7-5 record under the direction of head coach Jim Walker.
The Greyhounds started
the year of at 1-3 before a four-match winning streak put Moravian over .500 for the remainder
of the season.
Leading the team
this spring for Walker was the tandem of junior Clay Smith (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) and
freshman David Kurvink (Bethlehem/Liberty HS). Smith, who was knocked out of the MAC
Individual Tournament in the first round, posted his first winning singles record in his Moravian
career at 9-4. Smith was 3-1 at first singles and 6-2 at second singles. Smith earned a spot
on the MAC Academic Honor Roll.
Kurvink, who reached
the semifinals of the MAC Individual Tournament before losing to the eventual champion, posted
a 9-5 record in his debut season including a 5-3 slate at first singles and a 2-1 record at
second singles. The duo combined to give the Greyhounds a 7-5 record at first doubles this
spring.
Freshman Dan
Gorman (Saylorsburg/Pleasant Valley HS) posted an 8-4 slate in singles action this spring
with a 6-4 mark at fifth singles. Gorman teamed up with senior Jason Birli (Quakertown/Quakertown
HS) for a 2-4 doubles record with both wins coming in the MAC Individual Tournament.
Gorman had a 3-0 doubles mark this spring with sophomore Jeremy Kiechel (Allentown/William
Allen HS). Birli had a 4-4 singles record this season with a 2-0 slate at fifth singles.
Senior Clay Wagner
(Havertown/Haverford HS) was 7-5 this season with a 6-4 slate at third singles to complete
his Moravian career with a 22-24 singles record. Wagner played second doubles this spring
with freshman Todd Edwards (Conyngham/Hazleton HS). The duo was 9-5 on the year after
posting a 1-1 record in the MAC Individual Tournament and an 8-4 record during the regular
season. Edwards played fourth singles this year and had a 2-9 record.
Junior Chris
Braun (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg HS) posted a 2-3 singles mark this season for Moravian
after going 7-5 as a sophomore. Senior Rob Frank (Bethlehem/Dover HS) had one singles
win and he competed in one doubles match this year.
With four of his
six singles and doubles players returning next season, Coach Walker looks to improve on this
years 7-5 mark and advance to the MAC Playoffs.
