Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament First Day Results
Sophomore David
Kurvink won a pair of matches on the first day of the 2001 Middle Atlantic Conference Men's
Tennis Individual Championships at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre to move into the semifinal
round. Kurvink, who was seeded fifth, defeated John Moerschbacher of Lycoming College
in the second round, 7-6 (7-0), 7-5 after receiving a first round bye. In the quarterfinals,
Kurvink defeated top seed Bill Miller of Elizabethtown College, 6-1, 6-3. Kurvink plays
third seeded Mic Bender of Lebanon Valley College in the semifinals. The Greyhounds
other singles entry was freshman Jason Toedter, who was seeded seventh. Moravian was
the only school to have two seeded players. Toedter defeated Joe Panchenko in the second
round, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) after a bye in the first round. Toedter was knocked out in the
quarterfinals by fourth seeded J.D. Spina of Drew University, 6-, 7-5. In double play,
the Moravian tandem of sophomore Dan Gorman and freshman Mike Helmuth won their first round
match, defeating Andy Slawecki and Colin Gabler of Lycoming College, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Gorman
and Helmuth were knocked out of the tournament in the second round by third seeded Tim Peters
and Karl Rosen from Susquehanna University, 6-0, 6-2. The Moravian pair of senior Clay
Smith and sophomore Todd Edwards was seeded fifth in the championships and had a first round
bye. In the second round, Smith and Edwards defeated Adam Leach and Bob Rajani from
FDU-Madison, 6-2, 6-0 before falling to second seeded Andre Hines and Kevin Kolodgie of King's
College, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Vs. Ursinus
College Won 6-1
Moravian closed
out the 2001 dual meet season with a 6-1 victory over Ursinus College in non-conference action. The
Greyhounds finish the 2001 season with a 10-4 record, the first time Moravian has won 10
matches since 1996. Moravian will send six individuals to the Middle Atlantic Conference
Tournament this weekend at King’s College and Wilkes University. Winning in singles
action for the Greyhounds today were senior Clay Smith, who finished his career with 30 career
singles wins, sophomores David Kurvink and Todd Edwards and freshmen Jason Toedter and Fabio
Erdos. Smith, Edwards, Kurvink, Erdos, sophomore Dan Gorman and freshman Mike Helmuth
each earned victories in doubles play.
At Drew
University Lost 6-1
In their first
appearance in the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs since 1996, the Greyhounds dropped
a 6-1 decision to Freedom Conference regular season champion Drew University in the semifinals. Moravian's
only victory of the afternoon came at second singles in a straight sets win by freshman Jason
Toedter.
Vs. Lebanon
Valley College Won 4-3
Freshman Jason
Toedter earned a three-set victory at second singles to lead Moravian to a 4-3 victory
over Lebanon Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action and helped
the Greyhounds clinch their first MAC playoff berth since 1996 when the Greyhounds won the
MAC Commonwealth regular season title. Moravian will travel to Drew University, the
MAC Freedom regular season champion, for a semifinal match on Saturday, April 21st at a time
to be determined. The Greyhounds lost to Drew, 5-2, in their second match of the season. In
addition to Toedter’s singles win, the Greyhounds had singles victories from senior
Clay Smith at third singles and from sophomore Dan Gorman at fifth singles. Moravian
swept the doubles matches that had been suspended on Tuesday due to rain with victories from
sophomore David Kurvink and Toedter, Smith and sophomore Todd Edwards and freshman Mike Helmuth
and Gorman.
Vs. Lebanon
Valley College Suspended
Moravian’s
Commonwealth Conference match with Lebanon Valley College was suspended in the middle of
the doubles competition as rain arrived in the Lehigh Valley. The match will be continued
on Thursday, April 19th at 4:00 p.m. in Bethlehem with the winner earning a berth in the
Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs.
Vs. Susquehanna
University Won 6-2
The Greyhounds
are now just one win away from a trip to the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs after a
6-1 victory over Susquehanna University. The Greyhounds won five of six singles matches
with victories from senior Clay Smith, sophomores David Kurvink, Dan Gorman and Todd Edwards
and freshman Jason Toedter. Moravian swept the doubles matches with wins from the teams
of Kurvink & Toedter, Smith & Edwards and Gorman and freshman Mike Helmuth. The
Greyhounds must beat Lebanon Valley College in their final Commonwealth Conference match
to reach the MAC playoffs.
Vs. Muhlenberg
College Won 5-2
For the first
time since 1996, Moravian earned a victory over rival Muhlenberg College, winning a non-conference
match by a score of 5-2. The Greyhounds started the match by winning the doubles point
with wins at second doubles from senior Clay Smith and sophomore Todd Edwards and at third
doubles from freshmen Mike Helmuth and Fabio Erdos. Moravian would win four of the
six singles matches highlighted by a three-set win by sophomore David Kurvink at first singles. Kurvink
trailed Robby Richman after one set before rebounding to win match in tiebreakers in the
second and third sets. The Greyhounds also had singles wins from Edwards, Helmuth and
sophomore Dan Gorman . The victory also clinched at least a tie for Moravian in the
annual Matte Award with Muhlenberg. The Greyhounds lead 8-6 with two events left this
year.
At Albright
College Lost 6-1
The
Greyhounds had their two-match winning streak stopped and the squad lost for the first time
this season in Commonwealth Conference action, falling to Albright College, 6-1. Moravian's
only victory came at second singles from freshman Jason Toedter.
At University
of Scranton Postponed
Moravian
had its match for Sunday, April 8th at the University of Scranton postponed due to a rescheduled
Freedom Conference match for the Royals. No make-up date had been set as of Saturday
night.
At Widener
University Won 7-0
The Greyhounds
improved to 3-0 in the Commonwealth Conference with another 7-0 victory, this time defeating
Widener University. The 7-0 win is the fifth for the Greyhounds this season in six
victories. Earning singles wins for the Greyhounds were senior Clay Smith, sophomores
David Kurvink, Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman and freshmen Jason Toedter and Fabio Erdos. Freshman
Mike Helmuth replaced Erdos in doubles action as the Greyhounds swept all three matches.
Vs. DeSales
University Won 7-0
For the fourth
time this season, Moravian won a match by the final score of 7-0, defeating DeSales University
in Middle Atlantic Conference non-league action. The Greyhounds swept through the singles
action with five sweeps by senior Clay Smith, sophomores David Kurvink and Dan Gorman and
freshmen Mike Helmuth and Fabio Erdos. Freshman Jason Toedter needed three sets to
win his singles match. Sophomore Todd Edwards replaced Gorman and the other five players
also won in doubles for Moravian.
At King's
College Lost 5-2
Moravian
had its three-match winning streak snapped as the Greyhounds fell to King’s College,
5-2, in MAC action. Moravian had singles wins from sophomore David Kurvink and senior
Clay Smith in the match and had three other singles players, freshman Jason Toedter, and
sophomores Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman play three set matches in the loss.
Vs. Messiah
College Won 7-0
The
Greyhounds won their third straight match with their third 7-0 win of the season, defeating
Messiah College in Commonwealth Conference action. Earning wins in singles action were
senior Clay Smith, sophomores David Kurvink, Dan Gorman and Todd Edwards and freshmen Mike
Helmuth and Jason Toedter. Kurvink and Toedter combined for a doubles win as did Smith
and Edwards. Freshman Fabio Erdos won his second doubles match of the season with Helmuth.
Vs. FDU-Madison Won
7-0
The
Greyhounds opened their 2001 home season with their second 7-0 win of the season, defeating
FDU-Madison. Earning wins in singles action were senior Clay Smith, sophomores David
Kurvink, Dan Gorman and Todd Edwards and freshmen Mike Helmuth and Jason Toedter. Kurvink
and Toedter combined for a doubles win as did Smith and Edwards. Freshman Fabio Erdos
won his first doubles match of the season with Helmuth.
At Elizabethtown
College Won 5-2
The Greyhounds
opened its 2001 Commonwealth Conference season with a 5-2 victory at Elizabethtown College. Moravian
had singles wins from senior Clay Smith, sophomores Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman and freshman
Jason Toedter and Mike Helmuth. Smith and Edwards also combined for a win in doubles
action.
At Drew
University Lost 5-2
The Greyhounds
dropped its first match of the season, falling to host Drew University, 5-2 in Middle Atlantic
Conference action. Moravian received singles wins from freshman Jason Toedter at first
singles and sophomore David Kurvink in second singles.
At Wilkes
University Won 7-0
The
Moravian College men’s tennis team opened its 2001 season with a sweep of Wilkes University
that had all six players on the Greyhounds’ roster earning a win in singles and doubles
action with the 7-0 victory. Those players were senior Clay Smith, sophomores Todd
Edwards, Dan Gorman and David Kurvink and freshmen Mike Helmuth and Jason Toedter.
