2001 Review

The Moravian College men’s tennis team posted its best season since 1996 this past spring with a 10-4 overall record and a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Playoffs.

The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Jim Walker and associate head coach Art Smith, posted a 5-1 record in the MAC Commonwealth to earn the second seed in the playoffs, where the team lost to eventual MAC Champion Drew University.  The last time the Greyhounds made the playoffs and were in double digits for wins was 1996.

Leading the young Greyhounds this season were freshman Jason Toedter (Easton/Easton HS) and sophomore David Kurvink (Bethlehem/Liberty HS).  Toedter posted a 13-3 singles record this season with a 10-2 mark at second singles.  He was named the MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year as well as a MAC Commonwealth First Team All-Star.

Kurvink had a 12-5 singles mark this season including an 8-4 slate at first singles.  Kurvink reached the semifinals of the MAC Individual Tournament and was named to the MAC Commonwealth All-Star First Team.  The duo posted a 7-6 mark at first doubles this season including a 4-2 record in MAC Commonwealth action and both players were seeded in the MAC Individual Tournament.

Senior Clay Smith (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) finished out his career at Moravian with a 10-4 record this season at third singles.  Smith completed his career with an overall record of 30-28 with the 30 wins tying the record for most wins at Moravian by a singles player since 1980.

Smith posted an 11-5 record at second doubles this season with sophomore Todd Edwards (Conyngham/Hazleton HS).  The pair was seeded in the MAC Individual Tournament.  Edwards posted an 8-5 singles record this season with a 5-1 mark at fifth singles.

Sophomore Dan Gorman (Saylorsburg/Pleasant Valley HS) had another strong year for the Greyhounds, posting a 9-5 record this season.  Gorman, like Edwards, played at fourth, fifth and sixth singles with 4-2 marks at both fifth and sixth.  Gorman, who was a member of the MAC All-Academic Team, was 5-1 in MAC Commonwealth action.

Freshman Mike Helmuth (Bethlehem/Harrisonburg {VA} HS) posted a 6-6 singles record in his debut season with Moravian including a 5-5 mark at fourth singles.  Freshman Fabio Erdos (Easton/Wilson HS) had a 3-0 singles slate this season playing in the sixth slot.

Helmuth and Gorman combined for a 5-3 doubles record including one win in the MAC Individual Tournament while Helmuth and Erdos were 4-3 on the year in doubles play.

The Greyhounds have all but one player returning next year and will look to challenge for a second straight berth in the MAC Playoffs.
