At 2002 MAC Individual Championships – First Day Results

The Greyhounds had all six of their competitors knocked out of competition at the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships hosted by King's College and Wilkes University. In singles action, junior David Kurvink earn a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Joe Connell of Lycoming College in the first round while sophomore Mike Helmuth defeated Dan Neumann of Messiah College, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Helmuth defeated Trevor Fisher of Albright College in the second round, 6-4, 6-4 while Kurvink was knocked out of the tournament by #6 seeded Madhan Srinivasan of Wilkes University, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5. Helmuth lost to #3 seeded Oliver Camp of Drew University 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. In doubles action, the Moravian tandem of juniors Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman won their first round match, defeating Andy Borzok and Chris Mardekian of Elizabethtown College, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Jason Toedter and freshman Tasch Tinsley were seeded second in the tournament and had a first round bye. In the second round, Toedter and Tinsley defeated Jason Leach and Peter Nguyen of Wilkes University, 6-1, 6-1 while Edwards and Gorman were eliminated by Michael Venezia and Sam Mugavero of King's College, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Toedter and Tinsley were knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals by the #8 seeded duo of Julian Fuller and Quin Chrobak of Drew University, 6-1, 7-5.

At Drew University in MAC Semifinals – Lost 6-1

Moravian fell to defending MAC Champion Drew University, 6-1, in the Middle Atlantic Conference Semifinals for the second straight year. The Greyhounds finish the season with a record of 11-7. The Greyhounds received their point from a three-set singles victory by junior David Kurvink. Kurvink also won in doubles action with sophomore Mike Helmuth but the Rangers took the other two doubles contests to earn the doubles point.

Vs. Albright College – Won 5-2

The Greyhounds clinched their second straight trip to the Middle Atlantic Conference Playoffs with a 5-2 victory over Albright College in the regular season and MAC Commonwealth finale. Moravian finishes the regular season with an 11-6 overall mark and a 5-1 record in the MAC Commonwealth. The Greyhounds opened the match by winning the doubles point with victories from the tandems of sophomore Jason Toedter and freshman Tasch Tinsley and junior David Kurvink and sophomore Mike Helmuth. Moravian had straight set singles wins from Tinsley, Kurvink, Helmuth and junior Todd Edwards. The Greyhounds will travel to Drew University for the MAC Semifinals on Saturday.

Vs. King's College – Won 5-2

Moravian clinched its second straight 10-win season with a 5-2 non-conference victory over King's College for the squad's tenth victory of the year. The Greyhounds had four straight-set singles wins with victories from juniors David Kurvink and Dan Gorman, sophomore Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. Moravian swept the three doubles contests with wins from the tandems of sophomore Jason Toedter and Tinsley, Helmuth and Kurvink and junior Todd Edwards and Gorman.

At Susquehanna University – Won 6-1

The Greyhounds bounced back from their first loss of the season in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action to earn a 6-1 victory over Susquehanna University and moved within one win of making the MAC Playoffs for the second straight year. Moravian had straight set singles victories from juniors David Kurvink and Todd Edwards, sophomores Jason Toedter and Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. The Greyhounds had doubles victories from the teams of Kurvink and Helmuth and Toedter and Edwards. The Greyhounds need a victory over Albright College in their next MAC Commonwealth match to earn a playoff berth.

At Lebanon Valley College – Lost 4-3

In a battle of the top two teams in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth, the Greyhounds had their six-match winning streak snapped, dropping a close match to Lebanon Valley College, 4-3. Moravian had three singles victories with wins from juniors David Kurvink and Todd Edwards and sophomore Mike Helmuth. Kurvink and Helmuth also combined for a win in doubles action. The singles victory for Kurvink was the 30th of his career, making him the fourth Moravian player since 1980 to reach 30 career victories.

Vs. University of Scranton – Won 7-0

The Greyhounds ran their winning streak to six straight matches with a 7-0 victory over the University of Scranton in non-conference action. Moravian won all six singles matches with victories from juniors David Kurvink, Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman, sophomores Jason Toedter and Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. The Greyhounds also swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Hounds had victories from the teams of Toedter and Tinsley, Kurvink and Helmuth and Edwards and Gorman.

Vs. Elizabethtown College – Won 5-2

Moravian won its fifth straight contest and stayed undefeated in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth with a 5-2 victory over Elizabethtown College. The Greyhounds won four singles matches in the contest with victories from juniors David Kurvink and Dan Gorman, sophomore Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. Moravian won two of the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The victories came from the teams of Kurvink and Helmuth and Gorman and junior Todd Edwards.

At DeSales University – Won 7-0

The Greyhounds won their fourth straight match and moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season, sweeping DeSales University, 7-0, in non-conference action. Moravian won all six singles matches with victories from juniors David Kurvink, Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman, sophomores Mike Helmuth and Jason Toedter and freshman Tasch Tinsley. The Greyhounds also swept the doubles matches with wins from the teams of Kurvink and Helmuth, Edwards and Gorman and Tinsley and freshman Cody Hendershot.

At Messiah College – Won 6-1

Moravian won its third straight match to get back to .500 on the season, defeating Messiah College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action, 6-1. The Greyhounds remained undefeated in the MAC Commonwealth at 3-0. Moravian opened the match by winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Junior David Kurvink and sophomore Mike Helmuth earned a victory at second doubles while juniors Dan Gorman and Todd Edwards had a win at third doubles. Sophomore Jason Toedter, freshman Tasch Tinsley, Kurvink, Edwards and Gorman all earned straight set singles wins for the Greyhounds.

At FDU-Madison – Won 7-0

The Greyhounds won their second straight match by the score of 7-0, defeating FDU-Madison in non-conference action. Moravian swept the six singles matches with straight sets victories from juniors David Kurvink, Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman, sophomores Jason Toedter and Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. The Greyhounds also won two of the tree doubles contests to earn the doubles point. Moravian's wins came from the teams of Toedter and Tinsley and Kurvink and Helmuth. 

At FDU-Madison – Postponed until March 28th

Moravian had its non-conference match at FDU-Madison postponed due to rain and snow. The contest has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 28th at 3:30 p.m. in Madison, NJ.

Vs. Widener University – Won 7-0

The Greyhounds snapped a two-game losing streak and won their second straight MAC Commonwealth match of the season, defeating Widener University, 7-0. Moravian won all nine matches in the contest with straight set singles victories from juniors David Kurvink, Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman, sophomores Jason Toedter and Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. Toedter and Tinsley, Kurvink and Helmuth and Edwards and Gorman each teamed up for doubles wins. 

At Muhlenberg College – Lost 5-2

Moravian dropped its second straight match, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 5-2, in non-conference action. The Greyhounds received a singles win from sophomore Jason Toedter at first singles, 6-2, 6-0, while freshman Tasch Tinsley and junior David Kurvink each received 1/2 a point when their matches were called by darkness. The Greyhounds did win one doubles match with Kurvink and sophomore Mike Helmuth winning at second doubles, 8-6.

Vs. Drew University – Lost 6-1

The Greyhounds had their two-match winning streak snapped with a 6-1 loss to defending MAC Champion Drew University. Moravian received its only point on a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 singles victory from freshman Tasch Tinsley at second singles. Tinsley also combined with sophomore Jason Toedter for a 9-8 (7-4) victory at first doubles but the Rangers won the other two doubles matches to claim the doubles point.

Vs. Wilkes University – Won 5-2

Moravian won its second straight match as the Greyhounds defeated Wilkes University, 5-2, in non-conference action. Moravian had singles victories from juniors David Kurvink, Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman and sophomore Mike Helmuth. The Greyhounds also won the doubles point with victories from the teams of Edwards and Gorman and sophomore Jason Toedter and freshman Tasch Tinsley.

Vs. Juniata College – Won 7-0

The Greyhounds won their first match of the season over Juniata College, 7-0. Moravian swept all nine matches in the contest. The match does not count in the Commonwealth standings as Juniata just reinstated men's tennis and will not be part of the MAC Commonwealth until next spring. Moravian had singles victories from juniors Todd Edwards, Dan Gorman and David Kurvink, sophomores Jason Toedter and Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. The Greyhounds also had doubles wins from Toedter and Tinsley, Kurvink and Helmuth and Edwards and Gorman.

Vs. Springfield (MA) College – Lost 4-3

Moravian closed out its spring break trip to Orlando, Florida with a 4-3 loss to Springfield (MA) College. The Greyhounds had singles wins from sophomores Jason Toedter and Mike Helmuth and freshman Tasch Tinsley. The doubles team of Toedter and Tinley also earned a victory in the match. 

Vs. Aquinas (MI) College – Lost 7-0

The Greyhounds dropped their second match of the season to NAIA Aquinas College from Michigan, 7-0. Moravian's closest match came at third singles with a 6-1, 7-5 loss by junior David Kurvink.

Vs. Wabash (IN) College – Lost 4-3

The Moravian College men’s tennis team opened its 2002 season with a 4-3 loss to NCAA Division II Wabash College during the team’s spring break trip to Orlando, Florida.  Moravian had singles victories from juniors Todd Edwards and Dan Gorman.  The Greyhounds received doubles victories from the teams of Edwards and freshman Tasch Tinsley and Gorman and sophomore Mike Helmuth.
