2002 Review

A second straight playoff appearance and the most victories since the 1996 season highlighted the campaign for the 2002 Moravian College men’s tennis team under the direction of head coach Jim Walker.

The Greyhounds finished the season with an overall record of 11-7 and the squad’s 5-1 record in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth qualified the team for the MAC playoffs for the second consecutive season where Moravian fell to eventual champion Drew University.

Leading the squad this season were sophomore Jason Toedter (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and freshman Tasch Tinsley (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS). Toedter was named to the MAC Commonwealth All-Star Team for the second straight season as he posted a 9-9 record at first singles. Tinsley played his debut season with the Greyhounds at second singles and he posted a 12-5-1 record while earning MAC Commonwealth All-Star and Rookie of the Year honors. The duo combined for an 11-7 mark at first doubles.

Junior David Kurvink (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem, Catholic HS), who played third singles, led the Greyhounds in total victories with 27 after posting a singles record of 14-5-1 and a 13-5 doubles mark at second doubles with sophomore Mike Helmuth (Bethlehem, PA/Harrisonburg {VA} HS). Helmuth was 14-7 in singles action, playing in the fifth position. Kurvink has 35 singles victories in his career heading into his senior season, the most of any player in over 30 years.

Sophomore Todd Edwards (Conyngham, PA/Hazleton HS) posted an 11-7 mark at fourth singles this season while junior Dan Gorman (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) was 10-6 at sixth singles. Edwards and Gorman combined for a 10-8 slate at third doubles. Gorman was on the MAC All-Academic Team and he earned a spot on the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District squad. Freshman Cody Hendershot (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) played in two singles matches and three doubles contests this season for Moravian.

With the entire team slated to be back next season, coach Walker hopes to have the Greyhounds challenging for the MAC Championships next spring.
