At 2004 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships
co-hosted by Moravian and DeSales University Second Day Results
Senior Jason Toedter became the first male player in Moravian history to win the Middle Atlantic
Conference Individual Championship with a pair of three-set victories in the semifinals and
finals on the second day of the 2004 MAC Individual Championship co-hosted by Moravian and
DeSales University at the Lehigh University tennis complex. Toedter, the number two seed in
the singles tournament, defeated sixth seeded Julian Fuller of Drew University, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2,
in the semifinals. Toedter had a chance to win the contest in straight sets with two serves
for match point. In the championship match, Toedter defeated top seed J.D. Spina of Drew University,
6-3, 2-6, 6-3, for the title. Toedter completes his singles career at Moravian with 54 victories,
surpassing the old record of 50 set by David Kurvink last season.

At 2004 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships

The Greyhounds had four competitors in the 2004 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships
being co-hosted by Moravian and DeSales University at Lehigh University's tennis facility at
the Goodman campus. In singles, senior Jason Toedter, who needs one victory to set the school
career win record, was seeded second in the tournament and received a first round bye. Toedter
won his 51st career singles match in the second round, defeating Bernardo Urdaneta of Lycoming
College, 6-2, 6-4, to break the Moravian career singles victory record. Toedter would move
into Sunday's semifinals with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Matt Zimmerman of Albright College
in the quarterfinals. Toedter will face sixth seed Julian Fuller of Drew University in the
semifinals. Sophomore Neil Caniga was also competing in the singles tournament and defeated
Chris Keeney of Lebanon Valley College in the first round, 6-4, 6-1. Caniga was knocked out
of the tournament in the second round, falling to fifth-seed Jeremy Speicher of Albright College,
6-4 , 7-6 (4). In the doubles tournament, Moravian's entry of freshman Scott Shelbo and sophomore
Sean Lynch defeated Brad Lutz and Mike Impriano of Widener University in the first round, 6-4,
6-4 before falling to fourth seeded Hassan Shah and Arvin Narula of Wilkes University, 6-0,
6-1.

Moravian closed out the 2004 dual match season with a 9-5 record after a 5-2 victory over
DeSales University in non-conference action. The Greyhounds earned the doubles point with victories
from the teams of senior Jason Toedter and sophomore Nick Schuett and sophomore Sean Lynch
and freshman Scott Shelbo. Moravian then captured four of the six singles matches for the 5-2
win. Toedter won a three-set match at first singles to capture the 50th singles victory of
his career, tying the Moravian record set by David Kurvink last season. Toedter will have a
chance to break the record in this weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament.
Sophomore Neil Caniga won a three-set singles match while Shelbo and Lynch each had straight
sets singles wins.

The Greyhounds closed out the home portion of their 2004 schedule, defeating King's College,
6-1, in non-conference action. Moravian swept all three doubles matches to earn the double
point. The Greyhounds had wins from the teams of sophomore Neil Caniga and junior Mike Helmuth,
senior Jason Toedter and sophomore Nick Schuett and freshman Scott Shelbo and sophomore Sean
Lynch. Moravian also had straight sets singles victories by Toedter, Caniga, Helmuth, Schuett
and Shelbo. Toedter's victory was the 49th of his career, moving him one singles victory away
from tying the school record of 50 set by David Kurvink last year.

University 6-1. The Greyhounds won all three singles matches. Sophomore Neil Caniga and junior
Mike Helmuth defeated Seth Tidrick and Mike Impriano 9-8, 7-1, while senior Jason Toedter and
sophomore Nick Schuett defeated Brad Lutz and Andy Falocco with a score of 9-8, 7-2. Freshman
Scott Shelbo and sophomore Sean Lynch defeated Carlo Malkoun and Tom Dinneen 8-3. In singles
matches, Toedter, Caniga, Schuett, Shelbo and Lynch all defeated their opponents. Helmuth retired
during singles due to an injury. Moravian improved their season record to 7-4 and is 3-3 in
the Commonwealth Conference.

Sean Lynch. In doubles action, Caniga and junior Mike Helmuth combined together for Moravian's
only doubles win.

action. The match was played indoors due to rain. Moravian's only point came from senior Jason
Toedter, who had a straight sets victory at first singles. Toedter did combine for a win at
second doubles with sophomore Nick Schuett, however, the Greyhounds lost the other two doubles
matches and didn't receive any points for the win.

the season, defeating Elizabethtown College, 5-2. The Greyhounds earned the double point in
the contest by winning two doubles match with wins by the teams of sophomore Neil Caniga and
junior Mike Helmuth and sophomore Sean Lynch and freshman Scott Shelbo. Moravian also won four
of the singles matches with straight sets victories by Shelbo and senior Jason Toedter and
three-set wins by Caniga and Helmuth.

Conference match of the season. The Crusaders won two of the three doubles matches to earn
the doubles point. Moravian’s only win came at first doubles from the team of sophomore
Neil Caniga and junior Mike Helmuth at first doubles. The teams split the six singles match
with the Greyhounds earning victories at the second, third and sixth singles spots. Caniga

tandem of freshman Scott Shelbo and sophomore Sean Lynch. Moravian won all six singles matches
with straight sets victories by Toedter, Shelbo, Lynch, sophomore Neil Caniga and junior Mike
Helmuth. Schuett earned a pro-set victory after the Greyhounds had already clinched the match.

College postponed by snow covering the courts in Huntingdon. The contest has been rescheduled
for Sunday, March 28th at 1:00 p.m.

The Greyhounds 2004 home opener versus Wilkes University has been postponed due to several
inches of snow on the courts. The match has not been rescheduled at this time.
At Muhlenberg College Lost 6-1
Moravian suffered its first loss of the season, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 6-1,
in non-conference action. The match was played indoors due to snow. The Greyhounds' only point
of the match came at second singles where sophomore Neil Caniga earned a straight sets victory.
Moravian did win one of the doubles contests with a victory by the second doubles team of senior
Jason Toedter and sophomore Nick Schuett.

College in a match played in Orlando, Florida. The Greyhounds earned victories in two of the
three doubles contests to win the doubles point. Moravian's first doubles team of sophomore
Neil Caniga and junior Mike Helmuth won their match, 8-5, and the third doubles squad of freshman
Scott Shelbo and sophomore Sean Lynch had an 8-2 win. The Greyhounds won the top three single
matches to clinch the victory with straight set triumphs by Caniga, Helmuth and senior Jason
Toedter.

The Greyhounds had a doubles team and one singles player compete at the 2003 Intercollegiate
Tennis Association Southeast Championships hosted by Swarthmore College. Freshman Neil Caniga
and junior Mike Helmuth participated in the doubles draw and earned an 8-3 victory versus Alex
Bhaskarla and Ben Keller of Shenandoah University in the qualifier round. In the round of 32,
Caniga and Helmuth defeated Jonathan Crossley and Matt Ottis of Waynesburg College, 8-3. The
Greyhound duo was knocked out of the tournament top seed and the eventual runner up pair of
Scott Mayberry and Nick Peel of Salisbury University, 8-5. In singles action, senior Jason
Toedter earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Devin Visciano in the round of 64. Toedter was knocked
out of the tournament in the next round, falling to second seeded Paul McClure of Washington & Lee
University, 6-3, 6-2.
At 2003 ECAC Men's Tennis Open South Championship 6th of 10
Moravian began its 2003-04 season by competing in the 2003 Eastern College Athletic Conference
Men's Tennis Open South Championships at Mercer County Park in Mercer County New Jersey. Manhattan
College took first place with 18.5 points while the Greyhounds finished sixth with nine points.
Moravian was the top NCAA Division III team in the tournament. In first singles action, senior
Jason Toedter lost his first round match to Cprime Realista of St. Peters, 7-5, 6-3. At number
two singles, freshman Neil Caniga had a first round bye, and he defeated Conrad Nowgrudzki
from St. Peters, 7-6(4), 6-4 in the second round before being knocked out of the tournament
in the third round by Tamas Unguari of Dowling College, 6-0, 6-0. In third singles, junior
Mike Helmuth dropped a 6-3, 6-3 first round match to John Zazzu of Lafayette College while
sophomore Nick Schuett fell to Joe Menezes of Bucknell University in the first round of the
fourth singles bracket. In doubles action, the Greyhounds' team of sophomore Sean Lynch and
freshman Scott Schelbo earned a 6-3, 6-0 first round win over Mike Mastromonaco and Billy Jo
Mercado of St. Peters before falling to Paul Goldbeck and Mike Theile of Fairfield University,
6-0, 6-0.
