At 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate
Athletic Corporation Individual Tournament at Lehigh University hosted
by DeSales University & Moravian College First Day Results
Moravian had three singles players and one doubles team advance out
of the first round of the 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic
Conference Individual Championships at Lehigh University hosted by DeSales
University and Moravian. The first round and the quarterfinals are being
played indoors due to weather and all matches are just one pro-set.
Junior Neil Caniga, junior Nick Schuett and sophomore Josh Sheetz all
advanced with first round victories as did the doubles team of Caniga
and senior Mike Helmuth. The tournament is also in its first year as
a flighted tournament with six different singles flights and three double
flights being contested.
Caniga was an 8-1 winner over Mark Schneider of Widener University
in the first singles flight. Schuett defeated fourth-seeded Shawn Becker
of Lebanon Valley College, 8-6, in the first round of the fifth singles
flight while Sheetz topped Joe Holaska of DeSales, 8-4, in the first
round of the sixth singles flight. Caniga and Helmuth defeated Jeremy
Speicher and Dave Scherler of Albright College, 8-5, in the first doubles
flight.
Helmuth lost his first round singles match in the second singles flight
to third seeded Nathen Ipsen of Messiah College, 8-4. Also getting knocked
out in the first round of singles action were Scott Shelbo, falling
to John Zalesky of FDU-Florham, 9-7, in the third singles bracket and
Sean Lynch, losing to Brett Shipe of King's College, 8-5. In the first
round of doubles action, Shelbo & Lynch lost to Michael Byerly and
Ryan Horsley of Lycoming College, 8-6, while Sheetz and junior Robert
DiLauri lost to Josh Gardner and Salman Punekar of Wilkes, 8-2.
Caniga was knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals with
an 8-6 loss to second seeded Hassan Shah of Wilkes University while
Schuett lost to Josh Gardner of Wilkes, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. Sheetz
fell to Erick Sawchuck of Elizabethtown College, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
Caniga and Helmuth were also knocked out in the quarterfinals by top
seeded Michael Portonova and NIck Hojsack of King's College, 8-1

Vs. DeSales University Cancelled
Moravian's final dual match of the season versus local rival DeSales
University was cancelled after lightening and rain just after the match
had started. The contest will not be rescheduled this season as both
schools get set to co-host the 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate
Athletic Corporation Individual Championships at Lehigh University's
Goodman Campus this weekend.
Vs. DeSales University Postponed
to April 28th
Moravian's final dual match of the season versus local rival DeSales
University has been postponed until Thursday, April 28th due to a light
rain that fell prior to the start of the match. The contest will begin
at 4:00 p.m. at Hoffman Courts.
At Widener University Won 7-0
The Greyhounds closed out the 2005 Commonwealth Conference season
with a 7-0 victory at Widener University. Moravian had one victory in
doubles action by the team of junior Neil Caniga and senior Mike Helmuth,
and the Greyhounds won the other two matches by default to earn the
doubles point. Caniga, Helmuth and junior Sean Lynch all won straight
sets in singles action for Moravian while the Greyhounds earned three
matches by default.

of Scranton. The Greyhounds dropped all three doubles matches to loss
the double point before picking up three singles wins. Senior Mike Helmuth,
junior Neil Caniga and sophomore Josh Sheetz all had singles wins for
Moravian.

The Greyhounds suffered a 7-0 loss at Wilkes University in non-conference
action. Moravian's only win was in doubles action with a victory came
at third doubles with a win by the juo of junior Nick Schuett and freshman
Rob DiLauri. However, the Colonels won the other two doubles matches
to earn the doubles point.

Moravian saw its chances of a berth in the 2005 Commonwealth Conference
Team Championship Tournament take a hit as the Greyhounds fell to Lebanon
Valley College, 4-3, in Commonwealth Conference action at Hoffman Courts.
Lebanon Valley won two of three doubles matches to start the contest
to earn the doubles point. Moravian's lone double victory came from
the duo of junior Neil Caniga and senior Mike Helmuth. The Greyhounds
won three of the first five singles matches to finish with three-set
victories by Caniga, Helmuth and sophomore Scott Shelbo. The final match
for the deciding point was also a three-set match with Moravian's junior
Sean Lynch coming up just short in the final set.

The Greyhounds snapped a two-match losing streak with a 4-3 victory
at King's College in non-conference action. The Monarchs started the
match by winning two of the three doubles contests to earn the doubles
point. Moravian's lone doubles victory came from the duo of sophomore
Scott Shelbo and junior Sean Lynch at second doubles. The Greyhounds
would win four of six singles matches to take the match. Shelbo, Lynch
and senior Mike Helmuth all needed three sets to earn their victories
while sophomore Josh Sheetz earned a straight sets win.

Moravian won its second Commonwealth Conference match of the season,
defeating Susquehanna University in a match played indoors due to the
weather in Selinsgrove. The Greyhounds began the match by winning two
of the three doubles contests to earn the doubles point. Moravian had
wins from the teams of sophomore Scott Shelbo and junior Sean Lynch
and junior Nick Schuett and sophomore Josh Sheetz. The Greyhounds also
won four of six singles matches with a straight sets win by junior Neil
Caniga and three set victories by Lynch, Schuett and Sheetz. Sheetz'
win was the first of his collegiate career.

College, 4-3, to fall to 1-1 in conference action this season. Moravian
earned wins at the top three singles spots with victories by junior
Neil Caniga, senior Mike Helmuth and sophomore Scott Shelbo. The Greyhounds
did win one of the three doubles contests with a victory by the duo
of Shelbo and junior Sean Lynch, however, the Lions won the other two
doubles matches to earn the deciding point.

The Greyhounds' Commonwealth Conference match at Albright College
has been postponed due to rain. The contest has been rescheduled for
Thursday, March 31st in Reading.
Vs. FDU-Florham Lost 6-1
Moravian dropped a non-conference match to FDU-Florham, falling to
the Devils, 6-1, at Hoffman Courts. The match was the final contest
in a three-match homestand for the Greyhounds since the team returned
from Florida. Moravian's only win of the match was by sophomore Scott
Shelbo at third singles, his first singles win of the season.

Lynch. The Greyhounds also won three singles matches to seal the win
with straight sets victories by Caniga, Helmuth and Lynch.

Moravian opened its 2005 home season with a 6-1 loss to rival Muhlenberg
College in a non-conference match played in Breidegam Fieldhouse due
to cold temperatures. The Greyhounds' lone point came in a three-set
win at fourth singles by junior Sean Lynch. Moravian did win one doubles
match with a victory by the tandem of senior Mike Helmuth and junior
Neil Caniga at first doubles, however, the Mules won the other two doubles
contests to earn the doubles point. The win gives Muhlenberg a 7-4 lead
in the annual Matte Award standings.

6-1 victory over Hiram (OH) College in a match played in Daytona, Florida.
Moravian won five of six singles matches with straight sets wins by
juniors Neil Caniga, Nick Schuett and Robert DiLauri and senior Mike
Helmuth. Junior Sean Lynch needed three sets for his first singles win
of the year. The Greyhounds also swept the doubles matches to earn the
doubles point. Moravian had wins from the tandems of Caniga and Helmuth,
Lynch and sophomore Scott Shelbo and Schuett and DiLauri.

in a match played in Orlando, Florida. The Greyhounds' only win in the
match came at second singles where senior Mike Helmuth earned a three
set victory. Helmuth did earn a doubles victory with junior Neil Caniga
at first doubles, however, Ursinus won the other two doubles contests
to earn the doubles point.
