1999 Review

With a young team, which included four sophomores, the Moravian College men’s tennis team battled through the 1999 season with a 2-11 record. Head Coach Jim Walker, who returned to coach the squad after a two-year hiatus, had his young squad competing in every match and several of the losses were close even if the final score didn’t always indicate the same.

Leading the Greyhounds in singles victories was sophomore Chris Braun (Stroudsburg/ Stroudsburg HS) with a 7-4 overall slate while playing at fifth and sixth singles. Classmate Clay Smith (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) won six matches during the year while playing in the top singles position. Two of Smith’s victories were in the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament.

The Greyhounds’ lone senior Josh Groner (Wilson/Easton HS) and junior Clay Wagner (Havertown/Haverford HS) each won four singles matches during the spring. Groner played mainly at fourth singles while Wagner was the Greyhounds’ number two player. Wagner picked up one of his wins in the MAC Individual Tournament.

Sophomore Bob Morris (Green Lane/Souderton HS) had three singles wins between fourth, fifth and sixth singles. Moravian’s other two players this spring were junior Justin Biel (Linwood, NJ/Mainland Regional HS) and sophomore Mike Miller (Nazareth/Nazareth HS).

The doubles tandems of Morris and Braun and Smith and Wagner each posted five victories this season. Braun scored a win with Miller while Groner had a pair of wins with different partners.

Competing in the MAC Individual Tournament were the doubles teams of Morris and Braun and Miller and Groner.
