The 2009-10 Moravian College men’s tennis team and new head coach Bill Maxwell are excited about the upcoming year as the Greyhounds compete in the third year of the Landmark Conference. Moravian hopes to challenge for the conference title again this spring and returns all seven of its starters from last year’s squad.
Moravian posted an overall record of 13-6, which tied a school record for victories, and finished 6-1 in the Landmark Conference in 2008-09 as the Greyhounds made their third consecutive postseason appearance falling to Drew University in the conference championship match, Moravian's first-ever appearance in the conference title contest.
Last season, sophomore Kevin Holze (Bayside, NJ/St. Francis Prep HS), who was named to the Landmark All-Conference Second Singles Team, posted a 21-4 overall record, a school record for individual victories, and a conference mark of 7-0 in singles last year while recording an overall 15-7 doubles record, which is the school single season doubles win record, with sophomore Drew Shreter (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS), gaining them a spot as a team on the Landmark All-Conference Second Doubles Team. Shreter put up a 20-3 record with a 5-1 record in the conference for singles and earned a spot on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team for singles.
Senior Ian Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School) posted an overall record of 12-7, a 9-3 record at second singles and a Landmark Conference mark of 4-1 before a season ending injury in the final week of the regular season that kept him out of the postseason. Box, the 2008 Landmark Conference Player of the Year, was named to the 2009 Landmark All-Conference First Team in singles as well as the Landmark Conference All-Academic Team.
Box teamed up with junior Doug Morrow (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS), who was also named to Landmark All-Conference First Team Singles, in doubles for an overall record of 11-8 and a 4-1 record in the conference to earn a spot on the Landmark All-Conference First Doubles Team as a tandem. Morrow, pictured above, in his first year in the program also contributed an overall singles record of 9-15 and a Landmark record of 5-2.
Senior Chandler Forman (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth HS) posted a 17-6 overall for a 7-0 Landmark post in singles. Sophomore Nick Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) recorded a 15-6 overall mark in his debut season while senior Jason Bonilla (Whitestone, NY/ Bayside HS) posted a 5-4 record. Forman and junior Thomas Turcich (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township HS) recorded a 12-3 overall mark in doubles.
Coach Maxwell thinks the team looks to be a strong competitor in the Landmark Conference. To prepare the squad, Moravian has a pair of fall tournaments scheduled and a trip to Florida during Spring Break in March before the Greyhounds begin their 2010 spring season.
