2008 Outdoor Season Review

The Moravian College men's outdoor track & field team placed first out of six schools at the 2008 Landmark Conference Championships hosted by the Greyhounds, won its first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III title and placed 17th out of the 81 teams that scored and had two All-American at the 2008 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships hosted by University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This year’s squad was under the direction of first year head coach Walt Wandall, whowas named the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s National Indoor Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Wandall and his staff were also named the Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year for the 2008 indoor season.

At the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, junior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS), who was named the 2008 Mideast Region Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA, captured first place in the decathlon, with a school record total of 7,192 points, and earned All-American honors for the fourth time in his career and first time in the decathlon.  Brown’s point total is currently the seventh highest in NCAA Division III history since 1985 when the decathlon moved into its current format.

Senior Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown Area HS) also competed at the NCAA National Championships where he earned All-American Honors in both the 110-meter high hurdles, in a time of 14.50 seconds, and the 400-meter hurdles in a school record time of 52.01 seconds.

At the 2008 ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Greyhounds won their first ever ECAC Championship. Brown was named the ECAC Male Outstanding Performer of the Meet, after winning three individual titles and a relay, and placing second in a fourth individual event and a second relay event. Brown won the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.62 seconds, the 110-meter high-hurdles in 14.37 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 7.10 meters (23 feet, 3 ½ inches). Brown was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash in 10.82 seconds. Tussey ran a time of 14.45 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles, which was good enough for second behind Brown, and he was also second in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.55 seconds.

Brown joined with senior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS), junior Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) and freshman Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X HS) to win the 4x100-meter relay in a school record time of 41.72 seconds while Brown teamed with Tussey and freshmen Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) and Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) for a second place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:19.25. Shaffer also took third in the 100-meter dash in 10.93 seconds and Woodruff took sixth place in 11.07 seconds. Junior Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) got third in the shot put with a heave of 15.10 meters (49 feet, 6 ½ inches).

Also competing at the ECAC Championships was junior Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS), who cleared 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 1/4 inches) in the pole vault while senior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) got 16th in the pole vault at 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11 1/4 inches). Junior Justin Starcher (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) placed 18th in the javelin throw with a toss of 50.02 meters (164 feet, one inch).

At the 2008 Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships, Moravian took first place out of the six teams competing with a score of 277 points. The Greyhounds had a total of eight first place individual finishers, two relay teams finish in first and five NCAA Division III provisional qualifiers. Brown was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet while Maginnis was honored as the Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Meet. Coach Wandall and his staff were named the Men's Coaching Staff of the Year.

Brown captured the 100-meter dash in time of 10.73 seconds, the 200-meter dash in a stadium record time of 21.56 seconds, the 110-meter high hurdles in time of 14.49 seconds, and the long jump with a leap of 7.26 meters (23 feet, ten inches). Tussey captured the 400-meter dash in 49.12 seconds, the 400-meter hurdles in 53.28 seconds and was the runner up in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.53 seconds. Sophomore Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS) won the decathlon with a total score of 5,830 points while freshman Troy Bertholf (Liberty, NY/Liberty HS) won the hammer throw with a toss of 41.94 meters (137 feet, seven inches) and Skutches captured the 800-meter run in a time of 1:56.23.

In the relay events, Brown, Bell, Shaffer and Jones posting a winning time of 42.47 seconds in the 4x100 while the team of Brown, Tussey, Skutches and Jones won the 4x400 with a first-place time of 3:18.96 seconds. Maginnis won both the shot put, with a school record toss of 15.92 meters (50 feet, two inches), and the discus with a toss of 41.27 meters (135 feet, five inches).

Also contributing for the Greyhounds were seniors Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) and Joshua Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS), junior Jeremiah Reinhart (Doylestown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS), sophomores Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and Matthew Wisotsky (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS), and freshmen Jesse Miller (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg HS), Adam Polini (Shamokin Dam, PA/Lewisburg HS) and Zachary Valentine (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS).

Tussey, Maginnis, Shaffer, Fatzinger, seniors Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS HS), Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East HS HS) and Khizer Tariq (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley HS HS), juniors Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS), Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and John McCullough (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) and sophomores Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) and Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) were all named to the 2008 Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.  Tussey also earned a spot on the 2008 Landmark Conference Spring All-Academic Team and was named the 2008 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete for Men's Track & Field.
