1997-98 Review

The Greyhounds track and field team had two impressive showings in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships last season, placing fourth in the indoor meet and moving up one spot to third in the outdoor championship.

Leading Moravian at the indoor meet were four first place finishers. Sophomore Tim Pfluger (Slatington/Northern Lehigh HS) was first in the 1,500-meters in a time of 4:12.30 while classmate Dan Oliynik (Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.03 seconds.

The distance medley relay team of senior Bob Thear (Bethlehem/Freedom HS), junior James Hillary (Easton/Easton HS), and freshmen Damon Rutherford (Reading/Exeter HS) and Rich Tate (Warrington/LaSalle College HS) was first in 11:01.34. Hillary and Rutherford teamed up with Pfluger and junior Nick Murphy (South Kent, CT/South Kent School) to win the 3,200-meter relay in 8:26.35.

At the outdoor championships held at Widener University, Moravian again had four individual champions.

Senior George Young (Palmerton/Palmerton Area HS) was first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.43 seconds. Hillary captured the individual title in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 32:51.48. He was also second in the 5,000-meter race in 15:32.31.

Pfluger and Oliynik also won their second MAC titles of the year in the outdoor meet. Pfluger won the 1,500-meters in a time of 4:03.65 while Oliynik captured the 110-meter hurdles in 15.1 seconds.
