2000 Review

On a team dominated by freshman, the Moravian College women’s volleyball team was able to post its fifth straight 20-win season, a fifth consecutive trip to the post-season and a fourth straight berth in the conference title match versus NCAA Division III powerhouse Juniata College.  The Greyhounds did have their string of three straight appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament snapped this fall.

Senior middle hitter Becky Falk (Allentown/Dieruff HS), a Commonwealth Conference First Team All-Star, led the Greyhounds with a .282 hitting percentage in her final season.  Falk also had 284 kills and 68 blocks this fall.

Freshman outside hitter Kim Zipf (Wyomissing /Holy Name HS) was also named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star First Team and she was honored as the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year.  Zipf led the Greyhounds with 384 kills and 489 digs.  She added 26 service aces, 28 blocks and a .268 hitting percentage.

Senior middle hitter Sara Young (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) was named to the Verizon All-Academic District II Second Team and she was a Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team honoree.  Young led the Greyhounds with 77 blocks and she contributed 225 kills.

Freshman setter Amy Lawrence (Gettysburg/Delone Catholic HS) paced the Moravian offense this season with 954 assists and 59 service aces.  She also had 271 digs, 40 kills and 16 blocks.  Freshman setter Andrea Frankenfield (Emmaus/Emmaus HS) had 221 assists and 82 digs this year.

Moravian had two other players add over 140 kills this season.  Freshman outside hitter Shannon McNeil (Reading/Reading Central Catholic HS) had 149 kills, 213 digs and 35 blocks in her debut season while junior Sara Walkiewicz (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had 148 kills and 245 digs in limited action due to injuries.

Senior defensive specialist Emily Shonk (Ligonier/Ligonier HS) was second on the squad in digs at 308 and service aces with 42.  Freshman outside hitter Sara Hollenbacher (Reading/Reading Central Catholic HS) added 96 kills, 40 digs and 20 blocks in her debut season while junior outside hitter Krystol Kessack (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) had 69 kills, 239 digs and 21 service aces.

The Greyhounds will need to find a replacement in the middle for Falk and Young but with ten players coming back next fall, Moravian looks to earn a sixth straight 20-win season.
