2001 Review

The program’s first-ever berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Championships, a sixth straight appearance in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs and a sixth consecutive 20-plus win season highlighted the year for the 2001 Moravian College women’s volleyball team.  Moravian competed for the Commonwealth Conference title for the sixth straight season, falling to Juniata College, 3-1, in the title match.  The Greyhounds hosted the ECAC South Tournament as the top seed and the Greyhounds made the championship contest before falling to Grove City College, 3-1.

The Greyhounds had a 25-9 record this fall under the direction of head coach Shelley Bauder, who completed her ninth season at the helm with career record of 193-97.  Coach Bauder was named the 2001 Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year, the fourth time she has won the award in the last six years, and she coached three Commonwealth Conference All-Stars, two All-Region players, five members of the Middle Atlantic Conference Fall All-Academic Team and the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year.

Leading the Greyhounds on the court this season was sophomore outside hitter Kim Zipf (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS).  Zipf, who was named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the year, a Commonwealth Conference First Team All-Star and to the 2001 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team, led Moravian this fall with 4.12 kills per game and a .339 hitting percentage, which both ranked in the top three of the Commonwealth Conference.  Zipf had 445 total kills with 428 digs, 36 service aces and 17 blocks for the Greyhounds.  She will head into her junior season, needing just 171 kills and 133 digs to become the fourth player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs.  Zipf, who was named to All-Tournament Teams at three tournaments this season, will be the third Moravian player to have career totals over 1,000 in each category.

Sophomore setter Amy Lawrence (Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic HS), who was also named to the AVCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team and Commonwealth Conference All-Star First Team this year, ran the Moravian offense with 10.53 assists per game.  She had a total of 1,295 assists to go along with 366 digs, 94 kills, 66 service aces and 20 blocks.  Lawrence, who was on the MAC Fall-All-Academic Team, already has 2,249 assists and 125 service aces and has a chance to break the school record in each category.  Lawrence earned a spot on four All-Tournament Teams this season.  She and Zipf were also each named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week once this year.

Sophomore middle hitter Shannon McNeil (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team and she was third on the Greyhound squad this season with 295 kills while leading Moravian with 82 blocks.  McNeil also had 48 digs this season with a .267 hitting percentage.

Junior outside hitter Sara Walkiewicz (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) contributed 307 kills and 337 digs for the Greyhounds this season.  Walkiewicz added 55 service aces and 14 blocks while sophomore right side hitter Sara Hollenbacher (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic HS) had 242 kills, 88 digs and 53 blocks.  Hollenbacher was named to the MAC Fall All-Academic Team.

Senior defensive specialist Krystol Kessack (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), Moravian’s only senior this season, led the team with 84 service aces, which broke the school record, and she was third with 341 digs.  Kessack and sophomore outside hitter Mary Kate Cordisco (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) each earned spots on the MAC All-Academic Team.  Cordisco had 125 kills, 123 digs, 38 assists, 22 blocks and 14 service aces for the Greyhounds this fall.

Sophomore defensive specialist Andrea Frankenfield (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS), who was a member of the MAC All-Academic Team, contributed 203 digs and 49 service aces while sophomore defensive specialist Alissa Bucsi (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) added 240 digs and 63 service aces.

Freshman outside hitter Christina Wallace (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had 48 kills, 43 digs and 14 service aces in her debut season with Moravian while junior middle hitter Vicki Fisher (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick HS) added 44 kills, 20 blocks and 11 digs.

With ten players scheduled to return next season, coach Bauder looks for the Greyhounds to challenge Juniata for the Commonwealth Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament next season.
