CARNEGIE MELLON, WAYNESBURG EARN 3-1
VICTORIES IN 2003 ECAC DIVISION III SOUTH WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Fourth seeded Carnegie Mellon
University and sixth seeded Waynesburg College each scored 3-1 victories in the
2003 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Women Volleyball
Quarterfinals Friday evening at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Carnegie Mellon (24-11) defeated fifth seeded Johns
Hopkins University (23-9) 30-22, 30-15, 31-33, 30-18, in the tournament’s first
match and will now face top seed and host Moravian College (26-9) in a
semifinal match at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 15th. Waynesburg (35-4) extended its school-record
winning streak to 27 matches with a 30-26, 27-30, 30-24, 30-23
over third seeded
Carnegie Mellon, which captured last year’s ECAC South
Championship, was led on the court by freshman outside hitter Catie Fisher, who had a match high 25
kills. Sophomore middle hitter Chrissy Bartek had
19 kills, three service aces and three blocks for the Tartans while junior
outside hitter Laura Graf had a team
high 22 digs to go along with eight kills and two service aces. Senior setter Candace Spier controlled the Tartan
offense with 59 assists while senior libero Jennifer King had 17 digs.
Freshman defensive specialist Megan
Miyamoto added 12 digs while sophomore right side hitter/middle hitter Laura Stover had nine kills and nine
digs. Freshman middle hitter Melina Yablinsky
contributed six kills and five blocks for Carnegie Mellon.
Johns Hopkins was led by sophomore hitter Kate O’Callaghan, who had 16 kills and
16 digs. Senior hitter Stephanie Kaliades
contributed 14 kills, 11 digs and seven service aces for the Blue Jays while
sophomore middle blocker Jen Hajj
had 12 kills and four blocks. Junior
setter Betsy Baydala
controlled the Johns Hopkins offense with 35 assists and 19 digs while freshman
libero Lizzie Kay had 14 digs. Junior hitter Skye Young added ten digs, five assists, three kills and three
blocks.
Sophomore opposite hitter Brittany Morrow and senior outside hitter Ronnie Jo Meyers each had 15 kills to lead Waynesburg to its
victory with Morrow adding 11 digs
and three service aces and Meyers
contributing 14 digs and two service aces.
Freshman middle hitter Teia Suder had 14 kills and four blocks for the Yellow
Jackets while freshman middle hitter Kaci Hlad added 11 kills, six digs and four service
aces. Junior setter Katie Beall led the Waynesburg offense
with 51 assists and 17 digs while contributing four kills. Sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Sachar had six kills while
senior libero Kathryn Austen had 14
digs for the Yellow Jackets.
Gwynedd-Mercy was led by freshman outside hitter Alicia Klucsartis,
who had 11 kills and ten digs. Freshman
outside hitter Chrissy Longbottom
contributed ten kills and 15 digs while senior middle hitter Jenn Kratowicz
had nine kills, five digs and two blocks for the Griffins. Junior setter Cathy Fetter controlled the Gwynedd-Mercy offense with 33 assists,
13 digs and three service aces while sophomore libero Colleen Bruni had 23 digs. Senior opposite hirer Maribeth Linsinbigler had ten digs, four service
aces, three blocks and three kills for the Griffins.
