CARNEGIE MELLON CAPTURES 2003 ECAC SOUTH WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

 

            Bethlehem, PA --- Fourth seeded Carnegie Mellon University won a pair of matches to win the 2003 ECAC South Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship Saturday at Moravian College. 

            The Tartans, who won the ECAC for the second straight year, defeated sixth-seed Waynesburg College 30-24, 30-14, 30-26 for the title.  Sophomore middle hitter Chrissy Bartek of Carnegie Mellon was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. 

            Bartek had 20 kills in the championship match.  Senior setter Candace Spier had 42 assists and 15 digs for Carnegie Mellon, which finishes the year at 26-11.  Junior outside hitter Laura Graf added 10 kills and 13 digs for the Tartans, while senior outside hitter Jennifer King and freshman outside hitter Kathryn Fox contributed 16 and 11 digs, respectively.

            Waynesburg College (36-5) was led by senior outside hitter Ronnie Jo Meyers, who had 10 kills and 10 digs.  Junior setter Katie Beall added 31 assists for the Yellow Jackets, while sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Sachar and sophomore opposite hitter Brittany Morrow each contributed 7 kills.  Senior libero Kathryn Austen added 8 digs for Waynesburg College.

            Carnegie Mellon defeated first seeded Moravian College 22-30, 30-23, 30-28, 33-31 in the first semifinal game of the day. Bartek led the Tartans with 22 kills, while Spier had 48 assists and 13 digs. Graf added 12 kills and 10 digs, while freshman outside hitter Catie Fisher had 10 digs, as well as classmate Becky Mettler.  Fox and King had 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

            Leading the Moravian College Greyhounds (26-10) was junior outside hitter Kim Zipf with 17 kills and 16 digs.  Freshman setter Valerie Korsak added 51 assists, 9 digs, and 7 kills, while junior outside hitter Christina Wallace contributed 14 kills and 9 digs.  Sophomore middle hitter Lindsey Siracusa had 15 kills and 6 digs for the Greyhounds.

            Waynesburg College defeated FDU-Florham in the second semifinal game of the day 30-20, 30-25, 30-17.  The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman middle hitter Teia Suder who had 12 kills and 4 digs and Beall who had 39 assists.  Morrow contributed 10 kills and 15 digs, while freshman middle hitter Kaci Hlad added 10 kills and 3 digs for Waynesburg College.  Austen had 12 digs in the game.

            Junior setter Erin LeBan led the Devils (28-10) with 17 assists, while freshman libero Ashley Floro had 8 digs.  Junior outside hitter Lauren Ascolese, freshman outside hitter Laura Mildbrand and freshman setter Lindsey Flora each contributed 7 digs for FDU-Florham.
