1998 Review

In the school’s second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament highlighted the season for the women’s volleyball team as the Lady Greyhounds completed the fall with a 27-7 record and a 6-1 slate in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League. Moravian finished second in the Commonwealth League.

After winning three straight matches the Lady Greyhounds were defeated by Gettysburg College ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III poll. The Greyhounds season ended with their second meeting against Gettysburg in the second round of the NCAA tournament. In Moravian’s successful season, they won the Western Maryland Tournament in Westminster, MD. The Lady Greyhounds were defeated by Lycoming in the MAC finals for the second year in a row.

Leading the Lady Greyhounds on the court was senior Stephanie Rickards (Lansdowne/Upper Darby HS) with 468 kills, a .368 hitting percentage and 125 blocks. For the third year in a row she was named to the All-MAC Commonwealth League First Team and AVCA Mid-Atlantic Region team for a secod time adding 276 digs and 38 service aces. Junior Amy Sandt (Allentown/William Allen HS) was named to All-MAC Commonwealth League Second Team and led the Moravian Greyhounds in digs with 486 and services aces with 67. Junior setter Kaitie Kramer (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) made the All-MAC Commonwealth League Second Team and ran the offense with 10.55 assists per game. Teresa Hahn (Whitehall/Whitehall HS) finished the final year of her career with 115 kills and 82 blocks this season.

Due to a back injury, sophomore Sara Young (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock Area HS) who was named to the MAC League Rookie of the Year last year finished the season with 155 kills and 64 blocks. Natalie Balazuik (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) finished her season second on the team in both digs with 333 and services aces with 63.

In her second year with the Greyhounds Emily Shonk (Ligonier/Ligonier HS) made 31 service aces and 275 digs. Ending her freshman season, Krystol Kessack (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) had 155 kills and 251 digs.

Earning a spot on the Executive Director’s All-Academic squad was Stephanie Rickards. Balazuik, Hahn, and Young were named to the 1998 MAC Volleyball Academic Honor Roll. Rickards also garnered GTE/CoSIDA College Division Academic All-District first team honors. Rickards was also a GTE Academic All-American First Team honoree as well as the GTE Academic All-American of the Year for Women's Volleyball in the College Division.
