1999 Review

For the third straight season, the Lady Greyhound volleyball squad earned a berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament and for the first time in school history, Moravian won a match in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Lady Greyhounds, who finished the season with a 26-8 overall record, defeated Franklin & Marshall, 3-1, in the semifinals of the Mid-Atlantic Regional before ending the season with a 3-0 loss to national power Juniata College.

Under the direction of head coach Shelley Sorensen-Bauder, Moravian has posted a 102-26 record over the last four years and has made the championship match of the MAC Tournament the last three seasons. The three NCAA Tournament berths Sorensen-Bauder has led Moravian to are the only three in school history.

On the court this season, the senior tandem of outside hitter Amy Sandt (Allentown/William Allen HS) and Kaitie Kramer (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) led the squad and completed a record setting career for the Lady Greyhounds. They are the only two volleyball players at Moravian to win 100 matches. Sandt, who is the school record holder at Moravian in kills for a career with a total of 1,461 led the Lady Greyhounds with 425 kills and a school record 572 digs. Sandt also had 46 service aces, 36 blocks and a .242 hitting percentage. Sandt was named the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year this fall and also earned spots on the MAC Commonwealth All-Star First Team and the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region squad.

Kramer, who owns the school record for career assists with 4,319, led Moravian with a school mark 1,233 assists. Kramer also added 375 digs, 55 service aces, 124 kills and a .271 hitting percentage. Kramer joined Sandt on the MAC Commonwealth All-Star First Team and the AVCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team.

Junior middle hitter Becky Falk (Allentown/Dieruff HS) led the Lady Greyhounds this fall with a .272 hitting percentage and she had 323 kills and 65 blocks and 39 digs for Moravian. Junior middle hitter Sara Young (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) led the Lady Greyhounds with 79 blocks. Young added 257 kills and 32 digs.

Sophomore opposite hitter Sara Walkiewicz (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) contributed 162 kills, 309 digs, 56 service aces and 56 blocks in her first season with the Lady Greyhounds. Walkiewicz, who transferred to Moravian, was second on the team with 41 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Krystol Kessack (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) had 112 kills and 259 digs while rotating one of the outside hitter position with junior Kendra Insley (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood HS). Insley had 99 kills and 158 digs this season. Insley had 16 service aces while Kessack had 11 service aces.

Juniors Natalie Balaziuk (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and Emily Shonk (Ligonier/Ligonier HS) split time at the defensive specialist position in the back row for the Lady Greyhounds. Balaziuk had a team leading 66 service aces and added 270 digs while Shonk had 63 service aces and was third on the team with 361 digs.

Rounding out the Moravian squad this year were junior outside hitter Lisa Ann Herpok (Hamden, CT/Sacred Heart HS) and freshman middle hitter Vicki Fisher (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick HS). In limited action for the Lady Greyhounds, Herpok had 14 kills and 12 digs while Fisher had 11 kills, 15 digs and seven blocks.

Moravian competed in four in season tournaments and won two championships. The Lady Greyhounds placed first in the Blue Medal Division at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic in early September and also won the Elizabethtown College Halloween Classic. Moravian also placed second at the Green Terror Invitational hosted by Western Maryland College.

Sandt and Kramer also earned spots on the 1999 MAC Fall Academic Honor Roll as did Balaziuk, Herpok, Kessack and Young.
