2000-2001 Review

The 2000-01 Moravian College women’s basketball team showed a six-game improvement over the previous season, which was the worst in the last 20 years, and gave a glimpse of what is to come with a 10-14 record this winter.

The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Mary Beth Spirk (253-123 in 13 seasons), posted a 4-10 mark in the Commonwealth Conference with just one senior and one junior on the squad of 15. Of the Greyhounds 14 losses this season, five were by less than ten points and the squad scored over 70 points in seven of its ten wins.

Sophomore guard Tara Wozniak (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional HS) was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team after leading the Greyhounds with a scoring average of 15.6 points per game. Wozniak also led Moravian with 41 three-pointers while contributing 4.9 rebounds per game, 41 steals, 37 assists and 30 blocked shots. In just two seasons, Wozniak is well on her way to scoring 1,000 points for the Greyhounds with a total of 619 points.

Freshman guard Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) provided a spark for the Greyhounds in her debut season, scoring 14.6 points per contest and leading the team in scoring in nine games. Hughes, who was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Muskingum College Memorial Tournament, led the team with 53 steals and also had 70 rebounds, 43 assists and 34 three-pointers.

Sophomore forward Kelly McLean (Allentown/Salisbury HS) had her second straight strong season for the Greyhounds, averaging 13.8 points per game and led the squad with 7.8 rebounds per contest. McLean blocked a team best 33 shots this season and was the only Moravian player to shoot over 50 percent from the floor at 53.8 percent. McLean, who led the team in scoring as a freshman, added 28 steals and 16 assists. McLean, like Wozniak, is on her way to 1,000 points in her career with 641 points after two years with the Greyhounds.

It was another tough year for sophomore forward Kristen Sarnocinski (Harleysville/ Germantown Academy). Sarnocinski, who missed her entire freshman campaign with an ACL injury, reinjured her knee 13 games into the season and had to sit out the second half of the year. Sarnocinski was averaging 5.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game when she left the line-up and she had added 14 steals. Sarnocinski did earn a spot on the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team.

Freshman forward Tracie Shipman (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan HS) filled in for Sarnocinski and pulled down 5.9 rebounds per game and scored 4.3 points per contest. Shipman, who added 22 steals and 11 assists, led the Greyhounds in rebounding in ten games and she hit double figures in rebounds four times.

Senior guard Jill Kenny (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick HS) was the lone senior from Moravian this season and she led the squad with 72 assists. Kenny, a two-year captain, scored 61 points this winter and added 37 rebounds and 20 steals.

Sophomore guard Jennifer Tannous (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) scored 83 points for the Greyhounds this season and she added 14 three-pointers, 29 rebounds, 20 steals and 11 assists. Freshman guard Kim Smith (Gilbert/Pleasant Valley HS) scored 56 points on the year and had 24 rebounds despite missing 11 games with an abdominal injury.

Freshman guard Jackie Buschta (Whitehall/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had 46 rebounds, 43 steals, 31 points and 28 assists while playing in all 24 games for Moravian in her first season. Freshman guard Sarah Onkotz (Catasauqua/ Catasauqua HS) netted 54 points for the Greyhounds with 34 rebounds, 20 steals and 12 assists. Onkotz led Moravian in the opening game of the season with ten points at DeSales University. Freshman guard Meghan Silverman (Wyomissing/ Wilson West Lawn HS) added 21 points in a limited role this year.

Freshman forward Kristen Rohal (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) and sophomore forward Sue Creelman (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional HS) both contributed off the bench for coach Spirk this season. Rohal had 58 rebounds and 56 points in 23 games while Creelman added 49 points and 37 rebounds in 19 games. Junior forward Mary Morgans (Center Valley/ Allentown Central Catholic HS) played just the second half of the season after off-season surgery limited her action in the first half of the year. Morgans did contribute 14 points, 11 rebounds and ten steals in limited action this season. Freshman forward Liz Brogan (Point Pleasant, NJ/St. Rose HS) added ten rebounds and seven points this winter.

The Greyhounds should have a core of 13 players together for the next two seasons and hope that will help the squad return to the prominence of the early 1990s when Moravian played in the NCAA Division III National Championship game.
