The Moravian College women’s basketball team made a return to the postseason this year after a four-year hiatus with the team’s 20th appearance in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs and the Greyhounds posted an overall record of 16-10.
Moravian’s record was the team’s best since a 17-9 mark in 1997-98, also the last time the Greyhounds competed in the postseason. Moravian never lost more than one game in a row this season and the squad had a six-game winning streak in December and early January.
Head coach Mary Beth Spirk, who completed her 15th season at the helm with a career record of 269-235, led the Greyhounds to a third place finish in the Commonwealth Conference regular season with a record of 10-4 and a Commonwealth Conference semifinal game with eventual champion Messiah College.
Leading the Greyhounds on the court was junior guard Tara Wozniak (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional HS), who averaged 14.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Wozniak was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star First Team as voted by the coaches of the conference and she was also a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team. She led Moravian with 55 assists, 51 steals and 47 three-pointers while adding 20 blocked shots. Wozniak heads into her senior year at Moravian, needing just four points to become the 13th Moravian player to reach 1,000 career points.
Junior forward Kelly McLean (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) led Moravian on the boards with 8.0 rebounds per contest and she was second to Wozniak in scoring at 11.8 points per game. McLean, also a member of the MAC All-Academic team, also led the Greyhounds with 27 blocked shots and a .506 shooting percentage and she added 39 steals and 27 assists. McLean moved to sixth in school history with 572 rebounds in her career and should move into the top three during her senior year. She also has a chance to join Moravian’s 1,000-point club early next season, needing just 53 points.
Sophomore guard Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) averaged 11.0 points per game for the Greyhounds despite missing the last two games, including the playoff contest, due to illness. Hughes was second on the team with 31 three pointers and 43 steals and she added 38 assists and 87 rebounds this winter.
Junior guard/forward Kristen Sarnocinski (Harleysville, PA/Germantown Academy HS) averaged 6.9 points per game in her first full season with Moravian. Sarnocinski, who was named to the MAC All-Academic Team, missed all of her freshman year and half of her sophomore year due to injuries. She also contributed 100 rebounds, 43 assists, 27 steals and 24 three-pointers this season.
Freshman guard Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) started at point guard for the Greyhounds during her first year and she contributed 95 points, 64 rebounds, 48 assists and 30 steals.
Coming of the bench, sophomore forward Tracie Shipman (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Ryan HS) averaged 7.5 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Greyhounds. Shipman also had 31 steals and 18 assists while sophomore guard Kim Smith (Gilbert, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) contributed 65 points, 28 rebounds and 11 assists. Both Shipman and Smith were members of the MAC All-Academic Team.

Onkotz scored 60 rebounds with 27 rebounds and 14 steals while Silverman, a member of the MAC All-Academic Team, had 45 points, 34 rebounds, 23 steals and 17 assists.
Senior guard/forward Mary Morgans (Center Valley, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had 35 rebounds, 21 points, 17 steals and 11 assists in her final season with Moravian. Senior forward Carrie McCaffery (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) had 14 points and six points in limited action.
Junior forwards Lorrie Khalil (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) and Sue Creelman (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional HS) both contributed for coach Spirk as reserves. Khalil had 25 points and 19 rebounds while Creelman added 16 points and 25 boards.
