2002-03 Review

The Moravian women’s basketball team made it to the postseason for the second straight year and finished second in the Commonwealth Conference. The Greyhounds also hosted the ECAC Southern Tournament and it was their first time in the tournament since the 1993-1994 season.

Head coach Mary Beth Spirk, who completed her 16th season, led the Greyhounds to a record of 20-8, their first season of 20 wins since 1994 and an appearance in the championship game of the Commonwealth. She had three players make the All- Conference team. Junior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) was named to the Commonwealth All-Star First Team; senior Kelly McLean (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) was named to the Commonwealth All-Star Second Team, while freshman Catherine Golden (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) was named the Commonwealth Rookie of the Year.

Hughes led the Greyhounds in scoring with 12.9 points per game and a team high 56 three-point field goals. She also had 69 rebounds, 50 assists, and 50 steals. McLean led the team in rebounds and blocked shots with averages of 5.8 rebounds per game and 22 blocked shots, respectively. Also, she contributed 8.5 points per game, 19 assists, and 21 steals. In her first season as a Greyhound, Golden contributed 7.6 points per game, 12 three-pointers, 42 rebounds, 20 assists, and 18 steals.

Senior Tara Wozniak (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional HS) netted 9.4 points per contest and contributed 18 3-pointers, 92 rebounds, 44 assists, 53 steals, and 8 blocked shots. Classmate Kristen Sarnocinski (Harleysville, PA/Germantown Academy HS) posted 7.7 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, 51 assists, 27 steals, and 5 blocked shots.

Junior Sarah Onkotz (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) contributed 6.4 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, 43 assists, and 53 steals, while classmate Tracie Shipman (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) netted 6.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Shipman also had 29 assists and 48 steals. Freshman Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was second on the team in rebounds with 4.6 per contest. She also contributed 5.5 points, 25 steals, 22 assists, and nine blocked shots.

Sophomore Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) led the team in assists and steals with 81 and 58 respectively. She also contributed 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Junior Jackie Buschta (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had 28 points, 48 rebounds, 40 steals, and 39 assists.

Freshman Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) contributed 64 points, 38 rebounds, four assists, and two steals while freshman Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) had 50 points, 33 rebounds, 10 assists, and six steals. Junior Jen Ellard (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills HS) contributed 12 points and six rebounds, while freshman Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) added three points in her first season for Moravian.
