The Greyhounds had their 2003-04 season come to an end at the 2004 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament as fourth seeded Moravian fell to top seed and host DeSales University, 73-63, in a semifinal contest. The Bulldogs scored the game's first five points and led 8-1 before Moravian went on a 13-6 run to tie the score at 14-14 with 11:13 remaining in the first half. The teams would remain close for the next three minutes with the Greyhounds tying the score for a third time at 20-20 with eight minutes left in the half. However, DeSales used a 17-4 run to close the first half with a 37-24 lead. The Bulldogs kept a double-digit lead for most of the second half, with an 18-point lead of 62-44 with 4:15 remaining in the game. The Greyhounds would pull within nine points twice, including 69-60 with 41 seconds left but Moravian couldn't get any closer. Both teams made 22 field goals in the game with Moravian shooting 37.9 percent (22 of 58) and DeSales connecting on 34.9 percent (22 of 63) of its field goals. The Bulldogs added four three-pointers while the Greyhounds had three. The difference in the game came at the foul line. Moravian, which is ranked in the top 15 in the nation, made just 16 of 24 attempts (66.7 percent) while DeSales connected on 25 of 37 free throws (67.6 percent). The Bulldogs also forced Moravian into 25 turnovers while committing just 20 turnovers, and DeSales had a 47-39 advantage on the boards including a 28-18 edge in the second half. Moravian had just two players in double figures with freshman forward Kelly Applegate netting 18 points off the bench and freshman guard Rachel Berlin contributing 15 points as a reserve. Applegate grabbed seven rebounds, blocked three shots and had two assists while Berlin had two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore forward Lindsay Brase and freshman guard Katie Rizman each scored eight points with Brase adding three rebounds and Rizman contributing four assists and four steals. Junior guard Jen Behagg had six points, six rebounds and three assists while sophomore forward Stephanie Seaman added six points and four rebounds. Freshman forward Jenny Hackleman led the Greyhounds on the boards with ten rebounds, and she added three steals and two points in the game.

Sophomore forward Lindsay Brase netted a career high 18 points to lead the fourth seeded Moravian College women’s basketball team to a 90-62 victory over fifth-seed Catholic University in the first round of the 2004 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Southern Championships Wednesday evening in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds improve to 19-9 overall and advance to the semifinals where the squad will face top seed and host DeSales University, a 92-56 winner of eighth-seed Frostburg State University, on Saturday, March 6th at 12:00 p.m. Catholic ends its season with an overall record of 21-7. Saturday’s other semifinal will feature second seeded Lebanon Valley College, a 55-53 winner over seventh-seed Westminster College, and sixth seeded Washington & Jefferson College, which upset third-seed King’s College 81-61, at 2:00 p.m. After allowing the first basket of the game, Moravian jumped out to a 21-4 lead with 14:28 remaining in the first half. Catholic would respond with 26-9 run to tie the score at 30-30 with 4:51 before halftime. The Greyhounds would use a 16-5 run to finish the half with a 46-35 advantage. Moravian connected on 14 of 33 field goals (42.4 percent), five of 12 three-pointers (41.7 percent) and 13 of 16 free throws (81.3 percent) in the first half while committing just ten turnovers. The Cardinals shot 51.7 percent from the floor (15 of 29) and 50 percent (four of eight) behind the three-point line in the first half, but Catholic made just one of four free throws in the first 20 minutes and was forced into 15 turnovers by Moravian. The Greyhounds slowly expanded their lead to 64-47 with 11:17 remaining in the contest before Catholic went on an 8-2 run to pull within 11 points at 66-55. Moravian scored the game’s next 12 points to put the contest out of reach at 78-55 with 6:19 remaining in the game. Catholic was able to score just ten points in the final ten minutes of the game. Moravian’s shooting percentages went up in the second half as the Greyhounds connected on 13 of 28 field goals (46.4 percent) four of seven three-pointers (57.1 percent) and 14 of 15 free throws (93.3 percent). With the Greyhounds’ 27 of 31 performance at the free throw line, Moravian is now 553 of 738 at the foul line, and the Greyhounds’ opponents have attempted just 554 free throws on the year. Catholic went cold from the field in the second half, making just nine of 34 field goals (26.5 percent), three of 12 three-pointers (25 percent) and six of eight free throws (75 percent). Both teams committed nine turnovers in the second half. Brase led a quartet of Moravian players in double figures, and she was six of 11 from the floor and four of four behind the three-point line while added three rebounds and two assists. Brase’s career high was the second straight game she has improved on her previous single game high. Freshman guard Rachel Berlin tossed in 16 points for the Greyhounds while shooting five of ten from the floor and four of six behind the three-point arc. Berlin also had four steals in the victory. Freshman forward Kelly Applegate had 14 points and seven rebounds for Moravian while shooting eight-of-eight at the charity stripe. Freshman guard Katie Rizman added 11 points while freshman forward Jenny Hackleman had eight points and a game high ten rebounds to lead Moravian to a 42-34 advantage on the boards. Junior guard Jen Behagg also netted eight points to go along with nine assists and four steals. Junior guard Marion Berry had five points and three rebounds while sophomore forward Stephanie Seaman contributed five boards and three points. Vs. Widener University in Commonwealth Conference Championship - Lost 71-68   Boxscore

Moravian had its three-game winning streak snapped falling to fourth seeded Widener University, 71-68, in the 2003-04 Commonwealth Conference Championship game. The Pioneers now advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament while the Greyhounds must wait until Monday, March 1st to see if the team qualifies for the 2004 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championships. Moravian, which was the second-seed in the Commonwealth Tournament, trailed 9-4 with 15:48 remaining in the first half before the Greyhounds went on a 13-2 run to take a 17-11 lead with 11:50 remaining before the intermission. Moravian would continue to build on its lead expanding it to 40-25 at halftime. The Greyhounds connected on 15 of 33 field goals (45.5 percent) in the first half, and the team was nine-for-nine at the foul line. The Pioneers were cold from the floor in the game's first 20 minutes, making seven of 28 field goal attempts (25 percent) and eight of 12 free throws (66.7 percent). Widener, which also had three three-pointers, committed 17 first-half turnovers while Moravian had 15 turnovers at the intermission. When the teams switched sides of the court for the second half, the shooting percentages switched as well. Widener would make 16 of 30 field goals (53.3 percent), five of nine three-pointers (55.6 percent) and nine of 12 free throws (75 percent) in the second half while Moravian connected on just six of 27 field goals (22.2 percent) and two of eight three-pointers. The Greyhounds were 14 of 16 at the charity stripe (87.5 percent) and made their first 20 attempts of the game to stay in the contest. Moravian also committed 14 turnovers in the second half while Widener only turned the ball over seven times after the intermission. The Pioneers cut the Greyhounds lead to less than ten points for the first time with 14:38 remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Chelsea Luhta, which made the score, 45-38 Moravian. The Pioneers would pull within three points at 56-53 with 7:52 remaining on a lay-up by Luhta. Widener would finally take the lead on a pair of Luhta free throws with 3:56 remaining in the contest. However, Moravian sophomore forward Stephanie Seaman connected on a jumper to give the Greyhounds the lead right back at 64-63 with 3:01 remaining. Moravian pushed the lead to 66-63 on a lay-up by freshman guard Katie Rizman but Widener would tie the contest with 1:54 remaining on a three-pointer by senior guard/forward Nikki Carden. Carden hit a free throw with 52 seconds left for a 67-68 Widener lead but the Greyhounds would take the lead right back with 35 seconds left on a lay-up by junior guard Jen Behagg. Carden drilled the game-winning three-pointer with 21 seconds left and added a free throw with eight seconds remaining for the final of 71-68. Behagg did get a three-point attempt off before the buzzer sounded for the Greyhounds but it bounced off the rim. Carden, who had 31 points in the Pioneers upset of Messiah College, led Widener with 16 points and six steals. Luhta had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals while senior center/forward Erin Nemshick contributed 14 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard Nicole Stanley netted 13 points with four assists and four rebounds. Freshman guard Kelli Murphy contributed eight points off the bench for the Pioneers. Sophomore forward Lindsay Brase led Moravian with a career high 17 points, including eight of Moravian first 12 points in the second half. Behagg added 12 points with five assists, three rebounds and three steals while freshman forward Kelly Applegate had a double-double off the bench with 11 points and ten rebounds. Applegate added three steals while Seaman had seven points and six boards. Freshman guard Rachel Berlin had nine points, four steals and three rebounds for the Greyhounds while freshman forward Jenny Hackleman contributed eight points and six rebounds. Rizman scored four points and had four rebounds and three steals. Moravian played the contest with a rotation of a junior, four sophomores and four freshmen. The Greyhounds only two seniors, starters Kim Hughes and Tracie Shipman were both in street clothes with knee injuries.

Vs. Lebanon Valley College in Commonwealth Conference Semifinals - Won 57-52    Boxscore

The second seeded Greyhounds rallied from an 8-0 deficit nearly eight minutes into the game for a 57-52 victory over third-seed Lebanon Valley College in the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals. Moravian will host the Commonwealth Championship game on Saturday, February 28th versus fourth seeded Widener University at 7:00 p.m. after the Pioneers upset top seeded Messiah College, 69-64, in Wednesday's other semifinal. The winner of the championship game receives the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament which begins on March 3rd. The trip to the championship game will be the second straight for Moravian, which if looking for its first berth in the NCAA Tournament since the 1992-93 season. This is the second consecutive year Moravian defeated Lebanon Valley in the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals in Johnston Hall, after a 53-51 win last season. The Flying Dutchmen held the Greyhounds scoreless until the 12:19 mark of the first half when Moravian sophomore forward Stephanie Seaman made a free throw. The Greyhounds would not get their first field goal until the 10:56 mark when Seaman made a lay-up to cut Lebanon Valley's lead to 8-5. Moravian would take a 15-14 lead with 3:18 before the intermission on a pair of free throws by junior guard Jen Behagg. Moravian's lead would become 18-14 before Lebanon Valley scored the final four points of the first half to knot the score at 18-18. Neither team shot well in the first half with Moravian making just four of 25 field goals (16 percent) and 10 of 15 free throws (66.7 percent). The Greyhounds committed 13 turnovers while the Flying Dutchmen had 14 turnovers while shooting 21.9 percent from the floor (seven of 32) and 100 percent at the charity stripe (four of four). The Greyhounds scored the first four points of the second half for a 22-18 lead but Lebanon Valley countered with four points to tie the score for the final time at 22-22 with 17:40 remaining in the second half. Moravian freshman forward Jenny Hackleman hit a jumper at the 17:26 mark to give the Greyhounds a 24-22 lead, which they would not surrender the rest of the game. Moravian would lead by as many as seven points on several occasions throughout the rest of the half including 38-31 with 11:58 to play. Lebanon Valley would cut the Greyhounds' lead to one point four times in the final 8:44, however, the Flying Dutchmen couldn't get the basket to take the lead. After Lebanon Valley pulled within 49-48 with 3:17 remaining, Moravian would connect on six of six free throws while limiting the Flying Dutchmen to four points. Free throws were the key to the game for Moravian. The Greyhounds, ranked 14th in the nation this week in free throw percentage, made 21 of 29 free throw attempts (72.4 percent) while the Flying Dutchmen connected on just 13 of 15 foul shots. Moravian has outscored its opponents by 176 points at the charity stripe this season while being outscored from the floor by ten points. The Greyhounds ended up making 17 of 59 field goals (28.8 percent) and two of 11 three-pointers while Lebanon Valley was 19 of 58 from the floor (32.8 percent) and one of ten on three-pointers. The Flying Dutchmen had a 47-41 advantage on the boards but made 25 turnovers while the Greyhounds committed just four turnovers in the second half and 17 for the game. Moravian had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures. Seaman, who was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team on Tuesday, and freshman guard Rachel Berlin each netted 12 points with Seaman adding seven rebounds and Berlin grabbing four boards. Behagg added 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals while freshman forward Kelly Applegate had ten points, six rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Hackleman, the 2003-04 Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year, contributed eight points, seven rebounds and three assists while freshman guard Katie Rizman had four points and four rebounds in the victory. Lebanon Valley had just one player in double figures, junior forward Jennifer Northcott, a Second Team Commonwealth All-Conference selection. Northcott had ten points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior forward Tamika Rogers added 12 rebounds, six points and three blocked shots while junior guard Erin Eaby, a First Team Commonwealth All-Conference honoree, and freshman forward Monica Johnson each had eight points. Eaby added three assists, three steals and two rebounds while Johnson grabbed six boards. Junior guard Crystal Gibson, a Second Team Commonwealth All-Conference selection, had seven points, four rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Allie Butler tossed in six points while junior guard Carrie Lathrop added five points, three rebounds and three assists for the Flying Dutchmen.

Moravian earned an 81-68 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference action to close out the 2003-04 regular season. The Greyhounds will be the second seed in the Commonwealth Tournament with Messiah College's 91-81 victory over Widener University. The Greyhounds will host Lebanon Valley College in the semifinal game on Wednesday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m. Moravian jumped out to a 43-37 halftime lead. The Greyhounds trailed 13-10 at the 15:37 mark but a nine-point run gave the squad a 19-13 lead with 12:10 until the intermission. Elizabethtown would respond with an 11-4 run for a 24-23 lead with 9:21 remaining in the first half, however, the Greyhounds used an 11-4 run of their own for a 34-27 lead with 6:24 left in the first half. The game would be tied several times in the second half at 43-43, 57-57 and finally 62-62 with 5:38 remaining in the contest. The Greyhounds took the lead for good 20 seconds later on a lay-up and free throw by freshman forward Kelly Applegate. Moravian made 27 of 75 field goals (36 percent), five of 18 three-pointers (27.8 percent) and 22 of 29 free throws (75.9 percent) for the game. The Greyhounds committed just 15 turnovers in the contest and had a 60-43 advantage on the boards. The Blue Jays connected on 24 of 67 field goals (35.8 percent), four of 19 three-pointers (21.1 percent) and 16 of 29 free throws (55.2 percent). Moravian had a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures. Applegate had a career day with a season high 22 points and 12 rebounds while blocking three shots. The Greyhounds moved a step closer to the team's third straight Commonwealth Conference playoff berth with a 70-47 victory over Albright College in Commonwealth action. Moravian jumped out to a 34-22 halftime lead by shooting 12 of 14 (85.7 percent) from the foul line in the game's first 20 minutes. The Greyhounds finished the contest 23 of 28 (82.1 percent) at the charity stripe, and Moravian also made 21 of 55 field goals (38.2 percent) and five of eight three-pointers. The Greyhounds had a 45-29 advantage on the boards and forced Albright into 21 turnovers in the game. The Lions connected on 18 of 51 field goals (35.3 percent), four of eight three-pointers and just seven of 14 free throws in the contest. Moravian had a balanced scoring attack with all 14 players in uniform playing at least three minutes and ten student-athletes netting at least one point. Moravian dropped its final road game of the regular season, falling to nationally-ranked Messiah College, 68-59, in Commonwealth Conference action. However, Moravian remains in a tie for second place in the Commonwealth with Elizabethtown College defeating Lebanon Valley College and Susquehanna University topping Widener University. The Greyhounds held an early 8-6 lead before the Falcons went on a 12-0 run. Messiah led 34-21 at halftime after shooting 43.3 percent (13 of 30) from the floor in the first half. Moravian made just eight of 28 field goal attempts (28.6 percent) in the first 20 minutes of action. The Falcons would lead by as many as 28 points at 64-36 with 7:10 remaining in the contest. The Greyhounds would close out the contest with 22-5 run with reserves on the court for both teams. Moravian ended up shooting 36.1 percent from the floor (22 of 61) while the Falcons made 41.7 percent (25 of 60) of their field goal attempts. Messiah also had a 41-33 advantage on the boards in the game. Moravian had just one player score in double-figures in the game with junior guard Jen Behagg tying her career high with 15 points. At one point in the first half, Behagg scored ten straight points for Moravian. She also had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in the contest. Freshman forward Kelly Applegate scored 16 of her career high 18 points in the first half to rally Moravian from a 29-20 deficit to a 67-53 victory over Lebanon Valley College in Commonwealth Conference action. The Greyhounds trailed 29-20 with 3:24 remaining until the intermission before scoring the final ten points of the half, five by Applegate. Moravian would score the first three points of the second half before the Flying Dutchmen scored six straight to take a 35-33 lead with 16:07 to play. The Greyhounds responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Lebanon Valley would pull within 50-48 at 8:42 remaining but both teams would go scoreless over the next 3:40. The Greyhounds finished the game on a 17-5 run. Moravian, ranked 15th in the nation in free throw percentage this week, made just four of 12 free throws (33.3 percent) in the first half. The Greyhounds turned it around in the second half, making 18 of 20 foul shots (90 percent). This season, Moravian has been out-scored by 13 points from the floor by its opponents, but the Greyhounds have made 147 more free throws. Neither team shot the ball well from the floor. Moravian had a 40-34 halftime lead after trailing by four points early in the half. The Greyhounds would extend their lead to eight points before Juniata went on a 14-3 run to take a 50-49 lead with 12:58 remaining in the contest. Moravian responded with a 20-7 run to take control of the game with a 69-57 lead with 6:32 left in the contest. Moravian shot 44.3 percent (27 of 61) from the floor, and the Greyhounds connected on 50 percent (four of eight) of their three-pointer attempts. Moravian was also 24 of 33 (72.7 percent) at the foul line in the game. The Greyhounds also had a 42-27 advantage on the boards. Moravian, playing without starting seniors Kim Hughes and Tracie Shipman, used a balanced scoring attack with six players scoring in double figures and all seven players that scored having at least nine points. Moravian had its three-game winning streak snapped in a 64-52 loss to Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action. The Greyhounds led by as many as ten points in the first half, 17-7 with 10:28 remaining in the first half before seeing the lead slip away. Widener would take a 26-24 lead with 3:16 remaining before the intermission and would lead the rest of the way. Moravian would close within 48-47 with 7:42 remaining in the contest but the Greyhounds would go scoreless for the next 5:20 as Widener pulled away for the victory. Moravian shot just 32.2 percent from the floor, making 19 of 59 field goals. The Greyhounds failed to make a three-pointer for just the second game this season, going 0-for-11 behind the three-point line. Moravian did connect on 14 of 20 free throws but was forced into 32 turnovers in the game. Freshman forward Kelly Applegate was the only Greyhound player to score in double figures with ten points. Moravian shot 44.2 percent from the floor (19 of 43) and 50 percent (two of four) behind the three-point line. The Greyhounds won the game at the foul line where Moravian was 22 of 32 (68.8 percent) while Susquehanna made just 11 of 14 free throw attempts (78.6 percent). The Crusaders made 17 of 56 field goals (30.4 percent) and three of 12 three-pointers (25 percent). Freshman forward Jenny Hackleman led the Greyhounds with a career high 18 points in her second collegiate start. Hackleman added four rebounds and two blocked shots. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 40-27 halftime lead after shooting 50 percent (16 of 32) from the floor and 88.9 percent (eight of nine) at the foul line in the first half. Moravian finished the game shooting 52.6 percent (31 of 59) from the field. Sophomore forward Stephanie Seaman led the Greyhounds with her second straight double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Seaman was the only Moravian player to score in double figures. Junior guard Jen Behagg contributed nine points, seven assists and three rebounds while freshman guard Katie Rizman had eight points, five assists and three blocked shots. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 51-33 halftime lead behind a career high 13 first half points from freshman guard Rachel Berlin and held off a second half rally to earn an 85-77 victory over rival Muhlenberg College in non-conference action. The win was the 300th for Moravian head coach Mary Beth Spirk, who now has a career record of 300-149 in 17 seasons at the Bethlehem school. Moravian trailed just once in the game after Muhlenberg senior forward Becky Richmond hit a three-pointer 12 seconds into the game. The Greyhounds would take a 4-3 lead with 18:36 remaining in the first half and never trail again. Moravian led by as many as 21 points in the first half at 38-17 while shooting 53.5 percent (23 of 43) from the floor. Muhlenberg made just 22.2 percent (eight of 36) of its field goal attempts and 78.6 percent (11 of 14) of its free throws in the first half while committing 18 turnovers. The Greyhounds would close within 51-45 with 8:34 to play in the game but Messiah would pull away for the victory. The Greyhounds did make 18 of 22 free throws (81.8 percent) but Messiah connected on 22 of 27 free throw attempts (81.5 percent). Moravian set an NCAA record by connecting on all 35 of its free throw attempts led by freshman guard Katie Rizman, who was 11 for 11, in a 61-53 Commonwealth Conference victory versus Susquehanna University. The Greyhounds, who won their third straight game, were 15 of 15 at the charity stripe in the first half and 20 of 20 in the second half. In fact, Moravian is now 53 of 53 against Susquehanna in its last two games at Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds’ 18-for-18 performance against Susquehanna had been the highest perfect game total in Middle Atlantic Corporation history prior to today’s 35 for 35 performance. According to the NCAA records, the 35 for 35 performance is the highest total for any level of the NCAA, men or women. The best women’s performance in history was by the University of Kansas with a 31 of 31 performance on February 11, 1996. The top men’s performance was 34 of 34 turned in by UC-Irvine on February 21, 1981 and Samford University on December 20, 1990. Moravian, which led 33-24 at halftime, had just one player in double figures with Rizman netting a career high 13 points, however, nine of ten Greyhounds scored at least two points with all nine players going at least two-for-two at the foul line. Junior guard Jen Behagg hit a pair of free throws for two of her six points with one second remaining in the game to finish off the perfect game. The Greyhounds rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to take a one-point lead but Moravian couldn't hold on, falling to host Swarthmore College, 74-67, in the Championship game of the Swarthmore College Tip-Off Tournament. Moravian trailed 43-30 with 17:59 remaining in the second half before going on a 29-15 run to take a 59-58 lead with 4:42 remaining in the contest. However, the Greyhounds were unable to hold the lead and scored just eight points in the remainder of the game while Swarthmore netted 16 points for the victory. Senior guard Kim Hughes scored a team high 21 points for the Greyhounds to go along with six rebounds. Hughes, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, now needs just 15 points to become the 15th player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career. Sophomore forward Stephanie Seaman and freshman forward Jenny Hackleman each scored 12 points for the Greyhounds. Senior forward Tracie Shipman led the Greyhounds with eight rebounds to go with eight points. Freshman guard Katie Rizman contributed six points and three assists off the bench while sophomore forward Lindsay Brase had four points and three assists.

Moravian began the 2003-04 season with a 64-50 victory over Curry (MA) College on the first day of the Swarthmore College Tip-Off Tournament. The Greyhounds will now play host Swarthmore in the Championship game. Senior guard Kim Hughes was the only Moravian player to score in double figures with 13 points, however, 13 of 14 Greyhound players that saw action in the game scored. Hughes now needs just 36 points to reach 1,000 in her career. Sophomore forward Lindsay Brase added nine points, five rebounds and four steals for Moravian while freshman guard Katie Rizman had eight points. Freshman forward Kelly Applegate added seven points and eight rebounds while freshman forward Jenny Hackleman pulled down a game high 15 rebounds, with 12 in the first half, to go along with six points and three blocked shots. Sophomore forward Stephanie Seaman added 11 rebounds, five points, six steals, three assists and two blocked shots while senior forward Tracie Shipman had five rebounds, four points and three steals. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 34-18 halftime lead.
