2000 Review

The Moravian College women's cross country team had another outstanding season this fall with their eighth straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship, the second NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship in school history and a fifth place in the NCAA Division III National Championships, the third top five finish in the last eight years for the Greyhounds.  Moravian has also had eight straight MAC Individual Champions.

Leading the pack for the Greyhounds this season were four juniors.  Junior Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic/Riverside HS) paced the squad with her second straight All-American finish at the national championships in Spokane, WA.  Wolfsberger, the 2000 NCAA Mideast Region Runner of the Year, was second in the national race in a time of 18:10.6.  She also won the MAC race for the second consecutive year and the Mideast Regional meet for the first time.

Junior Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin HS) was also an All-American this season with a 26th place showing at the national race in 18:34.6. Shertzer also earned All-Region honors with a fourth place finish and All-MAC with a runner-up finish to Wolfsberger.

Junior Kim Jaick (Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh HS) had a breakout season, finishing 50th at the national championships in 18:58.9, sixth at the regional meet for All-Region accolades and third in the MAC meet for All-MAC honors. Junior Erin Boyle (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy HS) was fourth for the Greyhounds at the national championships in 69th place at 19:06.9. Boyle was also an All-Region runner with a tenth place finish in 19:01.4 and All-MAC with a fifth place showing.

Rounding out the top seven for the Greyhounds at the end of the season were senior Hannah Wood (Palm/Upper Perkiomen HS), sophomore Jennifer Wagner (Riegelsville/Wilson HS) and freshman Ashley Kimmet (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS). Wood placed in seventh at the MAC race to earn All-MAC honors and she was 63rd in the regional meet and 189th at the national meet. Wagner was an All-MAC Second Team honoree with a 12th place finish at the conference race. She was 51st in the region and 174th at the NCAA Championships. Kimmet, who came on strong at the end of the season, was also an All-MAC Second Team selection, finishing 14th. Kimmet was 36th in the region, just missing All-Region honors by one spot, and 200th in the national championships.

Moravian had two other All-MAC Second Team honorees with junior Amanda Samok (Palmerton/Palmerton Area HS) placing 16th and freshman Jaime Marks (Macungie/Emmaus HS) finishing 18th.

The Greyhounds will look to challenge for the NCAA Division III National Championship against next year with the top four runners and 19 of the team's 21 runners back next fall.
