At 2002 NCAA Division III National Championships at St. Olaf
College – Individual
Sophomore Heather McGarvie placed 69th of 215 runners at the 2002
NCAA Division III National Championships hosted by St. Olaf College.
McGarvie had a time of 22:58.3 on the 6,000-meter course and she finished
83 spots higher than last year when she was 152nd as a freshman.

For the first time since 1992, Moravian had its team season end at
the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional as the Greyhounds placed fifth
of 34 schools in the 2002 meet hosted by Salisbury (MD) University.
Only the top two teams in the region advance to the National Championships
next weekend, a race Moravian had run in each of the last nine years
as a team. The Greyhounds did qualify one individual for the National
Championships as sophomore Heather McGarvie earned All-Region honors
with a sixth place finish in a time of 21:36 on the 6,000-meter course.
Senior Jennifer Wagner also earned All-Region honors by placing 21st
of the 237 runners in 22:07 while freshman Erica Angell garnered All-Region
accolades as the sixth freshman and 26th runner overall to cross the
finish line in 22:17. Moravian's other runners included sophomore Chelsea
Mullins, who was returning from an injury, in 62nd place with a time
of 23:10, freshman Alexis Vergalla placing 75th in 23:23, sophomore
Alison Stoyko taking 86th place with a time of 23:36 and junior Angie
Morgan in 115th place at 24:07. The Greyhounds did pick up a point
in the annual Matte Award standings with a higher finish than rival
Muhlenberg College in the race.

At 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships – 1st

The Greyhounds won their tenth straight Middle Atlantic Conference
Championship by their closest margin ever, defeating Messiah College
by just four points, 43 to 47, at the 2002 MAC Championships run at
Lancaster County Central Park. Moravian did have its streak of individuals
champions snapped at nine as DeSales University sophomore Gina Lucrezi
won the race. The Greyhounds did have five runners earn All-Middle
Atlantic Conference accolades by finishing in the top 20 of the 6,000-meter
race. Sophomore Heather McGarvie paced the Greyhounds, who were running
without sophomore Chelsea Mullins due to an injury, with a third place
finish in a time of 23:14. Senior Jennifer Wagner placed fifth in 23:42
while freshman Erica Angell was eighth in 23:58 to earn first team
honors. Moravian's second team honorees were junior Angie Morgan in
12th place with a time of 24:00 while freshman Alexis Vergalla was
15th in 24:14.
Other Moravian competitors in the 116-runner race included sophomore
Alison Stoyko in 27th place in a time of 24:56, sophomore Megan Wise
in 29th place at 24:59, sophomore Kellie Smith in 55th at 26:04, sophomore
Kim Bushner at 61st in 26:36, junior Robin Edward at 68th with a time
of 27:01, and junior Jennifer Brief in 70th place at 27:10.

At DeSales University Invitational – 2nd of 38
Moravian ran for the first time in three weeks and finished second
to nationally ranked Dickinson College at the 2002 DeSales University
Invitational. The Greyhounds had a team score of 87, 49 points behind
Dickinson in the 38-team event. Leading the Greyhounds were sophomore
Heather McGarvie in fifth place with a time of 19:20.18 on the 5,000-meter
course and senior Jennifer Wagner in sixth place among the 278 competitors
with a time of 19:27.59. Sophomore Chelsea Mullins placed 20th for
the Greyhounds in 20:01.81 while freshman Erica Angell was 22nd overall
in 20:04.50. Rounding out the Moravian runners were freshman Alexis
Vergalla in 34th place in 20:22.30, junior Angie Morgan at 68th with
a time of 20:59.26 and sophomore Alison Stoyko in 83rd place at 21:11.95.
The Greyhounds had ten runners compete in the sub-varsity race with
Moravian placing fourth of the nine teams in the event. Sophomore Megan
Wise was the top Greyhound in the race with a time of 21:09.12, good
enough for 16th place in the 105-runner field. Sophomore Kim Bushner
was 32nd in 22:08.44 while junior Jennifer Brief placed 34th with a
time of 22:09.26. Junior Robin Edward was one place behind Brief in
35th at 22:09.76 while sophomore Holly Bofinger placed 46th with a
time of 22:29.42. Rounding our the Moravian competitors were sophomore
Kellie Smith in 50th place at 22:45.13, sophomore Meghan Krebs at 56th
in 23:05.23, junior Lauren Laviola placing 57th with a time of 23:05.83,
freshman Julie Leiby taking 77th in 24:06.80 and freshman Alicia Hernandez
at 102nd in a time of 27:49.63.

The Greyhounds took 16th place of 33 teams from all divisions at the
29th Annual Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University. Moravian had
a team score of 426 and was third among the ten NCAA Division III schools
in the race. Senior Jennifer Wagner led the Greyhounds on the 5,000-meter
course with a time of 22:55.72, which placed her 52nd in the field
of 221 runners. Sophomore Chelsea Mullins was second for Moravian and
73rd overall in 23:17.89 while sophomore Heather McGarvie finished
76th in 23:21.65. Rounding out the Moravian runners in the race were
freshman Erica Angell in 105th with a time of 23:53.00, junior Angie
Morgan placing 120th in 24:10.53, freshman Alexis Vergalla taking 145th
in 24:40.14 and sophomore Megan Wise finishing 165th with a time of
25:16.25.
Moravian also had nine runners compete in the College Open race with
sophomore Alison Stoyko leading that portion of the squad with a 34th
place finish in a time of 24:53.81. Sophomore Lindsay Stehman was 39th
in the 103 runner race with a time of 25:05.71 while sophomore Kim
Bushner placed 61st in 26:19.31. Rounding out the Moravian runners
in the College Open were junior Robin Edward in 66th with a time of
26:41.49, junior Jennifer Brief at 71st in 27:05.01, junior Lauren
Laviola placing 73rd in 27:14.04, sophomore Meghan Krebs taking 76th

At Elizabethtown College Invitational – 1st of 10
Moravian won its second straight meet and its third of the season,
capturing first place at the 2002 Elizabethtown College Invitational
run at Lancaster Country Central Park in Lancaster, PA, the site of
the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships in November. The
Greyhounds finished 13 points ahead of second place Messiah College
and placed five runners in the top 12 of the race with senior Jennifer
Wagner leading the team. Wagner placed 2nd in the 131-runner field
with a time of 23:41 on the 6,000-meter course. Sophomore Chelsea Mullins
was seventh in 24:23 while freshman Erica Angell placed tenth at 24:46.
Rounding out the Moravian top five were junior Angie Morgan in 11th
place at 24:50 and freshman Alexis Vergalla in 12th place with a time
of 25:54. The Greyhounds had two other runners in the top 25 with sophomore
Megan Wise finishing 17th in 25:16 and sophomore Alison Stoyko taking
24th with a time of 25:45

At Muhlenberg/Falcon Classic – 1st of 7
The Greyhounds won their second meet of the season, taking first place
at the Muhlenberg/Falcon Classic with a team score of 19 points, 35
points ahead of host Muhlenberg. Senior Jennifer Wagner was one of
six Greyhounds to finish in the top ten as she posted a time of 19:36
on the 5,000 meter course. Sophomore Heather McGarvie placed second
in 19:48 while freshman Erica Angell was third in 19:52. Junior Angie
Morgan took sixth place in 20:24 while sophomore Chelsea Mullins was
seventh in 20:26 and freshman Alexis Vergalla finished ninth with a
time of 20:49.

At Lehigh Valley Championships hosted by Lehigh University – 2nd
of 7
Moravian finished second of seven schools in the Second Annual Lehigh
Valley Collegiate Championships hosted by Lehigh University. The Greyhounds,
which had a team score of 62 points, lost to NCAA Division I Lafayette
College by three points. Moravian, which won the meet in 2001, actually
was leading the meet until the final 500 meters when one of the Greyhound
runners fell and lost her position in the race. Moravian did have four
runners place in the top 15 of the 83-runner meet. Leading the Greyhounds
was senior Jennifer Wagner in seventh place with a time of 23:30.4
on the 6,000-meter course. Junior Angie Morgan finished one place back
in eighth with a time of 23:41.8. Moravian's other top 15 finishers
were sophomore Heather McGarvie in 11th place at 23:51.4 and freshman
Erica Angell in 14th position with a time of 24:02.1. Rounding out
Moravian's top five was freshman Alexis Vergalla in 22nd place with
a time of 24:35.2.
Other runners for the Greyhounds in the meet included sophomore Chelsea
Mullins taking 30th in 24:58.3, sophomore Megan Wise placing 31st with
a time of 25:06.4, sophomore Lindsay Stehman finishing 37th in 25:34.6,

At Salisbury University Seagull Opener – 1st of 16
The Greyhounds, running on the course where the NCAA Division III
Mideast Regionals will be held this November, opened the 2002 season
with a first place finish at the Salisbury University Seagull Opener
in Salisbury, Maryland. Moravian, which had a team score of 43 points,
22 points ahead of second place Loyola College, placed three runners
in the top ten and five in the top 15 as the squad continues where
last year's team left off, despite the graduation of its top four runners
including three All-Americans. Sophomore Heather McGarvie paced the
Greyhounds with a fourth place finish in a time of 21:65.55 on the
6,000-meter course. Senior Jennifer Wagner was fifth in the 171-runner
field with a time of 21:32.15 and sophomore Chelsea Mullins placed
seventh in 21:45.68. Freshman Erica Angell had the best finish of Moravian's
newcomers, taking 13th place in 21:58.94 and she was followed by junior
Angie Morgan in 14th at 22:01.23.
Other competitors for the Greyhounds included sophomore Holly Bofinger
placing 23rd with a time of 22:23.11, freshman Alexis Vergalla taking
24th in 22:28.26, sophomore Megan Wise finishing 33rd in 22:48.86,
