At 1999 NCAA Division III Championships hosted by University
of Wisconsin-Oshkosh – 20th of 24
The Lady Greyhounds placed 20th of 24 teams at the 1999 NCAA Division
III National Championships. Sophomore Heidi Wolfsberger placed 28th
individually in a time of 17:37.1 on the 5,000-meter course to earn
All-American accolades. The top 35 runners out of the field of 213
at the NCAA Championships are named All-Americans. Sophomore Emily
Shertzer placed second for the Lady Greyhounds and 58th overall in
a time of 17:56.6. Junior Hannah Wood placed third for Moravian, finishing
107th in a time of 18:21.7. Rounding out Moravian’s runners were
sophomore Kim Jaick in 201st at 19:32.9, senior Maria Grabowski at
205th in 19:41.5, sophomore Erin Boyle at 207th in a time of 19:51.2
and freshman Jennifer Wagner in 210th at 20:01.4. Each of the Lady
Greyhound runners achieved a season best time at the race with most
of them improving by almost a minute from their times at the Mideast
Regional. It was the seventh straight year that the Lady Greyhounds
have competed in the championships meet. Moravian was the first of
three teams from the Mideast Region to finish, Dickinson, which beat
Moravian at the regional championship, was 22nd while Messiah College
placed 24th. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh hosted the 1999 NCAA
Championship.
At NCAA Division III Mideast Regional – 2nd of 32 – Qualify
for NCAA Division III Championships
The Lady Greyhounds qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships
for the seventh straight season after a second place finish at the
NCAA Division III Mideast Regional at Frostburg State University. Moravian
scored 117 points in the 32-team field. Sophomore Emily Shertzer paced
the Lady Greyhounds with a third place individual finish in a time
of 18:47.70 over the 5,000-meter course. There were 235 competitors
in the race. Sophomore Heidi Wolfsberger also placed in the top five
with a fifth place showing with a time of 18:54.20. Junior Hannah Wood
finished 15th in 19:33.10 while sophomore Kim Jaick was 30th in 19:52.10.
The quartet earned All-Mideast All-Region honors for placing in the
top 35. Moravian’s other runners at the NCAA Mideast Regional
were sophomore Erin Boyle at 64th with a time of 20:33.50, freshman
Jen Wagner in 73rd at 20:45.60 and senior Maria Grabowski at 87th in
a time of 21:01.90.
At MAC Championships – 1st of 13
For a record the seventh straight year, the Lady Greyhounds captured
the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship, winning the 1999 Championship
race hosted by Allentown College. Sophomore Heidi Wolfsberger captured
first place in the 5,000-meter race in a time of 19:00.08. Wolfsberger
is the fourth Lady Greyhound to win the MAC Individual Championship
and extended the Lady Greyhounds individual winning streak also to
seven. Moravian’s Kristie Reccek captured the MAC title in 1998
while Tara Wartman was the champion in 1996 and 1997 and her sister
Tracy Wartman was the race’s winner in 1994 & 1995. Carla
Thomas won the title in 1993. The last six years that Moravian has
won the MAC title, the team has also gone on to compete in the NCAA
Division III National Championships with four top-ten finishes, third
in 1993 and 1995, sixth in 1994 and eighth in 1997. The Lady Greyhounds
are currently ranked 14th in the nation this season and will try to
qualify for the 1999 NCAA Division III Championships in the Mideast
Regional Qualifier on Saturday, November 13th at Frostburg State (MD)
College. The Lady Greyhounds had a total of four runners earn All-Middle
Atlantic Conference Honors as three other runners placed in the top
ten in addition to Wolfsberger. Sophomore Emily Shertzer placed second
with a time of 19:08.76 while junior Hannah Wood was fourth at 19:43.08.
Sophomore Kim Jaick rounded out the Moravian All-Conference runners
with a sixth place finish in a time of 20:00.55. Sophomore Erin Boyle
was the fifth Lady Greyhound to cross the line in the 114-competitor
field. Boyle was 22nd overall in a time of 20:52.89. Moravian’s
lone senior Maria Grabowski was sixth on the team and 29th overall
at 21:06.90. Also competing for the Lady Greyhounds were freshman Jennifer
Wagner in 32nd at 21:19.37, junior Kate Westermann at 37th in 21:26.18,
freshman Jessica Giampolo in 44th at 21:43.70 and sophomore Amanda
Samok at 49th with a time of 21:57.87.
At Reif Memorial Run at Cornell University – No Team Score
The Lady Greyhounds had only one runner compete at the Reif Memorial
Run hosted by Cornell University. Sophomore Emily Shertzer placed second
of 37 runners over the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:00. The women’s
race was held at the same time as the men’s competition.
At Allentown Invitational – 2nd of 30
With top ten finishes from sophomores Emily Shertzer and Heidi Wolfsberger,
the Lady Greyhounds placed second of 30 schools at the Allentown Invitational.
The Lady Greyhounds, ranked 15th in the nation, had a team score of
107. Shertzer was seventh of 225 runners on the 5,000-meter course
with a time of 19:11.29 while Wolfsberger was ninth in 19:18.81. Junior
Hannah Wood placed 11th in 19:38.20 and sophomore Kim Jaick was 34th
in 20:26.04. Rounding out the Moravian top seven were sophomore Erin
Boyle in 46th at 20:42.79, senior Maria Grabowski at 63rd in a time
of 21:08.22 and junior Kate Westermann in 68th at 21:12.84.
At Dickinson College Invitational – 1st of 28
Moravian captured its second win of the season with a team score of
96 at the Dickinson College Invitational last Saturday. The Lady Greyhounds,
ranked ninth in the nation in last week’s NCAA Division III National
Poll, led the 28 team field behind three top ten finishes. Sophomore
Emily Shertzer was sixth overall out of 237 runners with a time of
19:14.00 over the 5,000-meter course. Junior Hannah Wood was one spot
behind Shertzer in 19:14.49. Sophomore Heidi Wolfsberger was ninth
in the race with a time of 19:21.39. Moravian had five other runners
competed at the Dickinson Invitational with sophomore Kim Jaick leading
the quintet with a 25th place finish in 19:56.57. Sophomore Erin Boyle
finished 50th in 20:32.73 while junior Kate Westermann was 53rd in
20:35.14. Senior Maria Grabowski placed 79th with a time of 20:57.76
while freshman Jen Wagner rounded out the Lady Greyhounds runners in
97th place at 21:12.58.
At Frostburg State (MD) University Invitational – 2nd
of 23 teams
The Lady Greyhounds placed second of 23 schools at the Frostburg State
Invitational behind four top 15 finishes. Sophomore Emily Shertzer
placed third of 201 runners over the 5,000-meter course in 18:58.8.
Classmate Heidi Wolfsberger was seventh in 19:23.0 and junior Hannah
Wood was eighth in 19:23.7. Sophomore Kim Jaick finished 14th for Moravian
with a time of 19:38.6. Senior Maria Grabowski rounded out the top
five for the Lady Greyhounds with a 42nd place finish in 20:35.6.
At Muhlenberg College Invitational – 1st of 8
Sophomore Emily Shertzer placed first over the 5,000-meter course
with a time of 19:13.2 to lead the Lady Greyhounds to a first place
team finish at the Muhlenberg College Invitational. Six other Lady
Greyhounds finished in the top ten lead by junior Hannah Wood in second
place at 19:41.6 and sophomore Kim Jaick at third with a time of 19:48.1.
Senior Maria Grawbowski was sixth in 20:53.8, sophomore Erin Boyle
was seventh in 21:00.8, junior Kate Westermann placed eighth with a
time of 21:21.4 and freshman Jennifer Wagner was tenth in 21:27.4
At Lafayette Invitational – 2nd of 11
Sophomore Heidi Wolfsberger captured first place in the 5,000-meter
Lafayette Invitational with a time of 19:04 to lift the Lady Greyhounds
to a second place finish behind Princeton University. Sophomore Emily
Shertzer placed fifth with a time of 19:16 while junior Hannah Wood
was seventh in 19:19. Rounding out the Moravian top five were sophomore
Kim Jaick in 22nd at 19:56 and sophomore Erin Boyle in 40th at 20:34.
At Kutztown – 6th of 10
The Lady Greyhounds opened the 1999 season, placing 6th of 10 teams
at the Kutztown University Maroon & Gold Invitational. Moravian
was the top NCAA Division III team at the meet. Sophomores Heidi Wolfsberger
and Emily Shertzer each placed in the top ten on the 6,000 meter course
