2003 Review

Moravian College began its inaugural NCAA women’s lacrosse campaign this past spring, and the Greyhounds improved as the season went along despite a 0-13 final record. The squad lost three of its final four matches by three goals or less after dropping just one of its first nine contests by the same margin.

Head coach Natalie Gozzard had a team that included six freshman, four sophomores, three juniors and two seniors to start the program.

Freshman midfielder Shannon Kelly (Southlake, TX/Carroll HS) led Moravian in scoring this year, netting 13 goals and five assists for 18 points. Kelly also added 35 ground balls, 16 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers. Freshman defender/midfielder Jess Cordani (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) was second on the squad in scoring with 11 goals and two assists for 13 points, and Cordani was ranked in the top ten in the nation with 42 caused turnovers. Cordani also added a team high 49 ground balls and 18 draw controls.

Junior attack/defender Lindsay Murphy (Lansdale, PA/North Penn HS) was a third Greyhound to score in double figures this season with seven goals and three helpers for ten points. Murphy also contributed 11 ground balls while junior midfielder/defender Kaity Cerco (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights HS) had seven goals and two assists for nine points and 20 ground balls. Sophomore attack/midfielder Hayley Zamek (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) netted six goals and two assists for eight points, and Zamek added 17 ground balls and ten draw controls.

Sophomore defender/midfielder Kristen Granato (Drexel Hill, PA/Haverford HS) was second on the squad with 42 ground balls while contributing 16 caused turnovers, ten draw controls and three assists. Senior midfielder Erica Miller (Tatamy, PA/Nazareth HS) had two goals in her only season with the Greyhounds while senior defender Celeste Adamski (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and sophomore midfielder Michelle Dougherty (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM HS) each netted a goal and an assist this season. Adamski also had 17 ground balls and eight draw controls while Dougherty contributed 16 ground balls. Sophomore defender Amy Kranchalk (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) had one assist on the year for Moravian.

Freshman defender Lauren Johnston (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Upper Moreland HS) contributed 35 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers this spring while freshman defender/midfielder Kristen Schol (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) added 23 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. Freshman defender/midfielder Rebecca Schol (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) had 21 ground balls this season, and junior attack Marissa Weaknecht (New Philadelphia, OH/New Philadelphia HS) played in nine matches before an injury sidelined her for the rest of the season.

Freshman goalie Chelsea Marshall (Hilton Head, SC/Hilton Head Prep HS) played all 780 minutes in goal for the Greyhounds this season. Marshall had a 14.62 goals against average and a save percentage of .530. She made 214 saves while allowing 190 goals.

Coach Gozzard plans on returning most of her squad next season and with the addition of another recruiting class, the Greyhounds expect to continue improving and challenging in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
