2000 Review

A school record 15 wins, a tie for the Commonwealth Conference regular season championship and the program’s first-ever postseason appearance highlighted the 2000 season for the Moravian College women’s soccer team. 

The Greyhounds were 15-4 on the season and 6-1 in the Commonwealth Conference regular season.  Moravian tied Elizabethtown College and Messiah College for the Commonwealth Conference regular season title.

Senior forward Becky Matijasich (Alpharetta, GA/Wilson West Lawn {PA} HS) led the Greyhounds, who weren’t sure who would lead the team in scoring, with 25 points on ten goals and five assists.  The ten goals were the second time in her career in Matijasich’s career that she scored ten in a season.  Matijasich, a former Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year, was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team this season.  She completed her career second in school history with 63 points on 23 goals and 17 assists.

Freshman defender Jackie Buschta (Whitehall/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and junior midfielder Stevie Ochse (Bethlehem/Saucon Valley HS) tied for second on the squad with 21 points this season.  Buschta had nine goals and three assists and she was the Commonwealth Conference Co-Rookie of Year as well as a Commonwealth Conference First Team All-Star.  Buschta was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team.  Ochse had seven goals and seven assists and was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star First Team.

Senior forward Lindsey Forman (Sharon, MA/Sharon HS) had 20 points this season on nine goals and two assists.  She completed her career with 15 goals and six assists for 36 points.  Sophomore midfielder Erin Glynn (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards HS) scored eight goals and three assists for 19 points in her first season for the Greyhounds.

Senior midfielder Marisa Confuorto (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hillsborough HS) set a Moravian record with 11 assists this season and she also set a school mark with three assists in a win over Albright College.  Confuorto also scored two goals this season to finish with 15 points.  Confuorto completed her Moravian career with 41 points on ten goals and 21 assists to rank in the top ten in points and second in assists.

Freshman midfielder Justina Bria (Warminster/William Tennent HS) had 12 points in her debut season with four goals and four assists.  Bria was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team and the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team.  Freshman forward Rori Franges (Bethlehem/Saucon Valley HS) had three goals this season while freshman midfielder Erica Napoli (Wyomissing/Wilson West Lawn HS) had six points on two goals and two assists.

Freshman midfielder Faye Zaninelli (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant HS) had one goal and three assists for five points for the year while sophomore forward Alex Camarano (Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had two goals.  Freshman midfielder Rachel Davy (Oaklyn, NJ/Haddon Township HS) had one goal and one assist while sophomore midfielder Kara Miller (Myerstown/ELCO HS) was the 13th different Greyhound to score a goal with one tally on the year.

Freshman midfielder Heather Bichler (Waverly/Abington Heights HS) and junior defender Becky Caulwell (Chester, NJ/Mt. Olive HS) each had one assist.

Also contributing for the Greyhounds this season were senior forward Mary Beth Walsh (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah HS), sophomore defender Allison Kranchalk (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant HS) and freshmen defender Lauren Roller (Doylestown/Central Bucks East HS) and midfielder Roxanne Esposito (Union, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) and Nicole Sabaliauskas (Butler, NJ/Butler HS).  Kranchalk was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll this fall.

Senior goalie Becky Roe (Worcester, NY/Worcester Central HS) was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star First Team after posting a 0.94 goals against average in 1,051 minutes.  Roe had 57 saves, three solo shutouts and a 10-2 record.  She completed her career with a 1.46 goals against average, 21 shutouts and a 39-21-1 record.  Sophomore Neali Miller (Wyomissing/Wilson West Lawn HS) played 585 minutes in goal this season with a 1.08 goals against average, 44 saves, three shutouts and a 5-2 record.  Sophomore Whitney Cantrell (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights HS) and freshman Kelly Wakeman (Easton/home schooling) each saw limited action this season and were part of two shutouts with Miller.  Cantrell had two saves while Wakeman had one save and also had a partial shutout with Roe.

With a corp of 20 players scheduled to be back for the 2001 season, the Greyhounds will look to battle for the Commonwealth Conference Championship again and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
