1997 Review

Led by the Reading area connection of sophomore Carli Miller (Wyomissing/Wilson West Lawn HS) and freshman Becky Matijasich (Dunwoody, GA/Wilson West Lawn {PA} HS), the Lady Greyhounds’ soccer team posted a 12-5-1 record with a 5-2 slate in the MAC Commonwealth League.

Miller scored a team-leading 15 goals and added seven assists on her way to being named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team sponsored by Umbro. Matijasich had ten goals and four assists in her debut season and was the MAC Commonwealth League Co-Rookie of the Year. Matijasich was on the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star first team while Miller was on the second team.

Senior Kate McGonigle (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade HS) was the third leading scorer with seven goals and four assists in her final season and was named to the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star first team. During her career, she had 20 goals and 13 assists.

Other goal scorers this fall were senior Dara Bregman (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) and freshman Amy Amadio (Temple/Muhlenberg HS) with four goals, sophomore Christie Gentile (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin HS) and junior Susie Keyes (Florham Park, NJ/Bayley Ellard HS) netted three goals each while senior Kris Pennings (Harleysville/Souderton Area HS) and sophomore Jen Polaha (West Lawn/Holy Name HS) had two goals each. Bregman was a MAC Commonwealth League first team honoree while Gentile was on the second team.

Freshman netminder Becky Roe (Worcester, NY/Worcester Central HS) had a 1.71 goals-against average in her debut season with five shutouts. Roe averaged 6.8 saves per match. She combined on two other shutouts with senior Katelyn Gwiazda (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) and freshman Heather Karp (Hellertown/Saucon Valley HS).

Helping the goalies on defense were Pennings, Polaha, juniors Meghan McGowan (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North HS) and Megan McGill (Blairstown, NJ/Northwest Regional HS) and freshman Marisa Confuorto (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hillsborough HS).

Pennings garnered MAC All-Academic accolades.
