2002 Review

The Moravian women’s tennis team continued to dominate opponents as the Greyhounds won their third straight and sixth MAC Team Championship in seven seasons this fall. Their overall record was 15-0 making it Moravian’s third perfect season in the last five years. Moravian currently has a 38-match winning streak and the squad had a 46-match winning streak from 1997 until 1999.

Head coach Dawn Benner was named the MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season and had two MAC Commonwealth All-Stars.

Junior Lauren Castagna (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) had a 16-2 singles record and 11-1 at third singles. Senior Jen Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) had a 15-5 singles record with a 12-2 first singles record. Genevese was a member of the Commonwealth All-Conference Team for the second straight year. She reached the semifinals of the 2002 MAC Individual Tournament as the number three seed and she finished her career with a 53-13 singles record. Junior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) went undefeated in fourth singles with a 14-0 record. She was also combined with sophomore Jill Iacovelli (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) in recording a 15-4 doubles record. Iacovelli was 1-0 in sixth doubles.

Sophomore Becky Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) posted a 12-6 singles record and 12-3 at second singles. She was a member of the 2002 All-Conference Team. Deringer and Genevese had a 14-2 doubles record together with a 12-1 first doubles record. Deringer has a career mark of 27-7 with two seasons left. Junior Petia Damianova (Haskovo, Bulgaria/ISM) had a singles record of 7-2 and 5-1 in fifth singles while, freshman Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS) posted a 7-8 singles record. Senior Jillian Simms (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) was 2-1 at singles, senior Missy Graeff (Reading, PA/Schuylkill Valley HS) was 3-8 in singles action, freshman Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS) was 2-3 in singles, and Iacovelli posted a 1-0 record in sixth singles.
