At 2003 Middle Atlantic Corporation Individual Championships hosted by Drew University

Moravian junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna won the 2003 Middle Atlantic Corporation Women’s Tennis Doubles Championship hosted by Drew University. Deringer and Castagna were the third seed in the tournament and defeated the top seeded team of Heidi von Schwedler and Josemar Castillo of Lycoming College, 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals and fourth seeded Abby Woodhead and Anne Luetzow of Drew University, 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match. After a first round bye, Deringer and Castagna defeated Allison Hoffman and Jillian Federico of the University Scranton, 6-0, 6-3, in the second round and fifth seeded Melanie Parenteau and Kristy Trimbey of Elizabethtown College, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Moravian’s other doubles team in the MAC Individual Tournament was junior Jillian Iacovelli (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) and sophomore Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS). The duo defeated Lisa O’Neil and Hillary Brandt of Albright College, 6-0, 6-3 in the first round before being knocked out by second seeded of Caitlan Wyblel and Maggie Grzelak of FDU-Florham, 6-2, 6-3.

In singles action, Greyhound junior Marion Berry was seeded third in the tournament and reached the semifinals before falling to top seeded Deanna Ng of Messiah College, 7-5, 7-6(0). Berry had a first round bye before defeating Debbie Mensch of Juniata College, 6-1, 6-0 in the second round and seventh seeded Megan Michael of King’s College, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Nicole Gruber also played in the singles tournament for Moravian. Gruber earned a first round victory over Michelle Moser of FDU-Florham, 6-2, 6-0 before falling to second seeded Tara McHugh of Susquehanna University, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round.

Moravian finished its 2003 dual match season with a 15-match winning streak after an 8-1 victory over Wilkes University in non-conference action. Moravian won all three doubles matches with victories from the teams of junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna, sophomore Katie Cooke and junior Jillian Iacovelli and freshmen Courtney Hall and Margo Kokolus. The Greyhounds then won five of six singles matches with victories by junior Marion Berry, sophomore Nicole Gruber, senior Petia Damianova, sophomore Sara Weller and sophomore Rachel Vannatta. All nine contests were played in pro sets.

The Greyhounds then swept all six singles matches with victories by Deringer, Castagna, senior Marion Berry, sophomore Nicole Gruber, senior Petia Damianova and junior Julie Anderson.

At University of Scranton in MAC Championship match – Won 5-4

Moravian won four of six singles matches to erase a 2-1 deficit in doubles en-route to a 5-4 victory over The University of Scranton in the championship match of the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference team tournament Saturday afternoon at Poly-Hi Park. The Greyhounds, who won their 13th straight match on the season, won their fourth consecutive MAC title and seventh in the last eight years. The Royals took an early 2-1 lead in doubles, as the team of Allison Hoffman and Jillian Federico defeated Moravian senior Marion Berryand junior Jillian Iacovelli, 8-5, and Kristin Bellino and Katie King stopped Greyhound sophomore Katie Cooke and senior Petia Damianova , 9-7, at two and three, respectively. Moravian’s junior Becky Deringerand senior Lauren Castagnatopped Maggie Leuzarder and Jessica Coty, 8-6, to pick up a valuable point at one. Berry and Deringer came back to win the number one and two singles by downing Leuzarder, 7-5, 7-5, and Coty, 6-2, 6-2, respectively, while Moravian sophomore Nicole Gruber and junior Julie Anderson came through at the number four and six. Gruber defeated Bellino, 6-3, 6-1, and Anderson stopped Karen Dilsizian, 6-1, 6-4. Federico recorded her second win of the day with a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-5 (10-4) win over Damianova at five and Wydra picked up the 26th win of her career with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Castagna at three.

Moravian captured its 12th straight victory of the year, defeating King's College, 8-1 in non-conference action. The Greyhounds swept the three doubles contests with victories by the teams of junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna, freshmen Courtney Hall and Margo Kokolus and sophomores Rachel Vannatta and Sara Weller. Vannatta and Weller won by default as did freshman Kristin Smith in singles action. Moravian won a total of five singles contests with addition victories by senior Marion Berry, sophomores Nicole Gruber and Katie Cooke and Vannatta.

At Drew University in MAC Semifinals – Won 7-2

The Greyhounds won their 11th consecutive match and now have a chance to play for the team's fourth straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship after a 7-2 victory over Drew University in an MAC Semifinal. The Greyhounds will travel to the University of Scranton for the MAC Championship contest on Saturday, October 11th at a time to be determined. The Greyhounds have won the last three MAC titles and six of the last seven MAC Championships.

Moravian opened the match by winning two of the three doubles points. The Greyhounds had victories from the doubles tandems of junior Becky Deringer and Lauren Castagna at first doubles and senior Petia Damianova and sophomore Katie Cooke at third doubles. Moravian then won the top five singles matches for the victory. Senior Marion Berry had a straight sets win at first singles while Deringer earned a straight sets victory at second singles. Castagna needed three sets for her win at third singles as did sophomore Nicole Gruber at fourth singles. Damianova won her match at fifth singles in straight sets.

Moravian rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to earn a 5-4 victory over Elizabethtown College in Middle Atlantic Conference action to qualify for the MAC Playoffs for the tenth consecutive year. The Greyhounds improve to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the MAC Commonwealth while Elizabethtown falls to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. Moravian will be the second seed from the Commonwealth in the MAC Playoffs and will travel to MAC Freedom top seed Drew University on Wednesday, October 8th in a MAC Semifinal. Moravian’s only doubles win came from the team of junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna by a score of 9-8(2) in a pro-set tiebreaker. The Greyhounds had straight sets victories from Deringer, Castagna and senior Marion Berry to tie the match at 4-4 as the Blue Jays earned straight sets wins at fifth and sixth singles. Moravian sophomore Nicole Gruberdropped her first set 4-6 and trailed 3-0 in the second set at fourth singles before winning 12 straight games to claim the match and put the Greyhounds back in the postseason.

Moravian extended its winning streak to nine straight matches and moved within a victory of a tenth consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference playoff berth with a 9-0 victory over Lebanon Valley College in MAC Commonwealth action. The Greyhounds began the match by winning all three doubles matches with victories by the teams of senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli, junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna and senior Petia Damianova and sophomore Katie Cooke. Moravian also earned wins in all six singles contests with Berry, Deringer, Castagna, Damianova, sophomore Nicole Gruber and junior Julie Anderson each collecting victories.

At ITA Southeast Regional Tournament at Mary Washington College – Second Day Individual Results

The Greyhounds had four players competing on the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Tournament hosted by Mary Washington College. Senior Lauren Castagna won her round of 16 match and advanced to the semifinals of the "B" Draw Singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Kerri Califano of Mary Washington College. Castagna was knocked out of the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Kendra Penry of Hollins University in the semifinals. Junior Becky Deringer lost to Julie Crewson of Grove City College, 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 16. In the semifinals of the "B" Draw Doubles, Moravian's duo of senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli was leading the team of Claudia Davis and Jen McKenzie of Meredith College, 7-5, when they retired the match and left the tournament.

At ITA Southeast Regional Tournament at Mary Washington College – First Day Individual Results

Moravian sent four players to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Tournament hosted by Mary Washington College and all four Greyhounds were undefeated on the first day of action. In the "B" Draw for singles, junior Becky Deringer defeated Kelly Robinson of Sweet Briar College in the round of 64, 6-0, 6-0, and then Deringer defeated Katherine Kishiyama of Mary Washington College, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 32. Moravian senior Lauren Castagna also won a pair of matches in the "B" Draw, defeating Kirkland Wohlrab of Sweet Briar College, 6-1, 6-0, and defeating Sarah Loeffler from Haverford College, 6-3, 6-1. In the "B" Draw for doubles, senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli also earned two victories on the first day of action with a win over Katy Leishear and Kamala Payne of Mary Baldwin College, 8-0, and a victory versus Jennifer Adkins and Katharine Howard of Hollins University, 9-7, in the round of 16.

Moravian won the match with singles victories by Damianova, senior Lauren Castagna, junior Julie Anderson and sophomore Nicole Gruber. The match came down to Anderson's three-set victory at sixth singles.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three doubles victories with wins by the teams of junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna, senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli and sophomores Sara Weller and Rachel Vannatta. The Greyhounds also won five singles matches with wins by Berry, Deringer, senior Petia Damianova, and sophomores Nicole Gruber and Katie Cooke. Castagna also earned a victory by default.

Moravian has had its non-conference match at DeSales University postponed one day to Tuesday, September 16th due to inclement weather. The match will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Center Valley.

Vs. Juniata College – Won 9-0

The Greyhounds earned their third consecutive victory with a 9-0 sweep of Juniata College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action. Moravian opened the match by sweeping all three doubles contests with victories by the teams of junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna, senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli and freshmen Courtney Hall and Margo Kokolus. The Greyhounds had six straight sets singles wins on the match with victories by Berry, Castagna, Deringer, senior Petia Damianova, junior Julie Anderson and sophomore Nicole Gruber.

The Greyhounds postponed their Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth match with Juniata College until Sunday, September 14th at 1:00 p.m. due to inclement weather conditions.

Vs. Kutztown University of Pennsylvania – Won 8-1

Moravian won its second straight match, defeating NCAA Division II Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, 8-1, in non-conference action. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles contests. Moravian had victories from the teams of junior Becky Deringer and senior Lauren Castagna, senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli and senior Petia Damianova and sophomore Rachel Vannatta. Moravian won five of the six singles matches in straight sets with wins by Berry, Deringer, Castagna, Damianova and sophomore Katie Cooke.

The Greyhounds earned their first victory of the 2003 season with a 5-4 non-conference win at the University of Scranton. Moravian trailed 2-1 after the doubles matches with the squad's lone victory from the team of senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli. However, the Greyhounds won four of the six doubles matches for the win. Berry and sophomore Nicole Gruber earned straight sets victories while senior Petia Damianova and junior Becky Deringer each needed three sets to earn their wins.

At Messiah College – Lost 5-4

Moravian suffered its first loss in nearly three years, falling to Messiah College, 5-4, in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth season opening match. The Greyhounds had won 38 consecutive traditional season matches and hadn't lost since falling to Messiah on September 30, 2000. The loss was also just Moravian second loss in MAC Commonwealth action since 1997, both to Messiah. The Greyhounds won three singles matches in the contest with victories from senior Petia Damianova and juniors Julie Anderson and Becky Deringer. Moravian also had one doubles win from the duo of senior Marion Berry and junior Jillian Iacovelli.

Moravian will now open the season on Saturday, September 6th with a MAC Commonwealth match at Messiah College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
