The Greyhounds dropped their first non-traditional season match of the year, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 8-1. Moravian, playing without its top senior players, could earn just one victory, a three-set victory by freshman Leah Bradshaw at third singles. Muhlenberg now has a 6-4 lead in the Annual Matte Award Standings between the two schools.

At King's College – Won 9-0

Moravian closed out its 2004 season with a 9-0 sweep of King's College in non-conference action to finish the year with a 13-3 record. The Greyhounds opened the contest by sweeping the doubles contests with wins by the teams of junior Nicole Gruber and freshman Leah Bradshaw, sophomores Courtney Hall and Margo Kokolus and junior Sara Weller and freshman Lindsey Hopper. Moravian would also earn six straight sets singles wins with victories by Gruber, Bradshaw, Weller, junior Katie Cooke and freshmen Brittany Popaca and Jennel Yelito.

At 2004 Middle Atlantic Corporation Individual Tournament at Drew University – Second Day Results

The Greyhounds had one individual champion at the 2004 Middle Atlantic Corporation Individual Tournament hosted by Drew University with freshman Brittany Popaca claiming the MAC title at sixth singles. This year marks the first time the tournament has been flighted for all six singles positions and all three doubles flights. In past years, there was just one singles tournament and one doubles tournament.

Moravian entered the second day of the tournament with four singles player and two doubles team in the semifinals but Popaca was the only champion. Popaca, who was the top seed, defeated fourth seeded Jenny Larson of Lebanon Valley College, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals before knocking off second seeded Kristy Trimbey of Elizabethtown College, 6-4, 6-3 for the title.

At first singles, fourth seeded senior Becky Deringer of Moravian fell to top seed and eventual champion Erin Burke of Drew, 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals. In third singles, third seed junior Nicole Gruber was knocked out of the tournament by second seeded Melanie Parenteo of Elizabethtown College, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6. At fifth singles, Moravian's third seeded freshman Leah Bradshaw fell to second seeded Fiona Burns of Drew in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-3.

At first doubles, Moravian second seeded squad of Deringer and senior Jillian Iacovelli defeated fourth seeded Maggie Grzelak and Caitlin Wyble of FDU, 8-3, in the semifinals before falling to top seeded Stacy Shapiro and Kristy Trimbey of Elizabethtown, 9-8 (4), in the championship match. In the third doubles flight, Gruber and junior Sara Weller fell to second seeded and eventual champion Fiona Burns and Dragana Trivic, 8-5, in the semifinals.

At 2004 Middle Atlantic Corporation Individual Tournament at Drew University – First Day Results

Moravian had four singles players and two doubles team reach the semifinals of the 2004 Middle Atlantic Corporation Individual Tournament hosted by Drew University. This year marks the first time the tournament has been flighted for all six singles positions and all three doubles flights. At first singles, Moravian senior Becky Deringer was seeded fourth and defeated Molly Coursey of Juniata College, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, and Josemar Castillo of Lycoming College, 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Greyhound junior Nicole Gruber was seeded third in the third singles bracket and received a first round bye before defeating Sarah Boynton from Susquehanna University, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 10-7 in the quarterfinals. In fourth singles, senior Jillian Iacovelli defeated Kristin Kile of Wilkes University, 6-1, 6-1 before losing to top seeded Lisa Abel of Elizabethtown College 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

At fifth singles, Moravian freshman Lead Bradshaw was seeded third and had a first round bye before defeating Kate Ottinger of DeSales University, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. In sixth singles, Greyhound freshman Brittany Popaca was awarded the top seed and a first round bye before she defeated Kristen Sabastian of King's College, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Moravian did not have a competitor at second singles.

In first doubles action, the Greyhound team of Deringer and Iacovelli was seeded second and defeated Maggie Lezarder and Jessica Coty from the University of Scranton, 8-3, in the first round and the duo of Castillo and Lauren Paich of Lycoming, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. At second doubles, Moravian's team of senior Julie Anderson and junior Katie Cooke was knocked out in the first round with a loss to Danielle Dormer and Boynton of Susquehanna. There was no score available. At third doubles, Moravian's tandem of Gruber and junior Sara Weller defeated Coursey and Megan Carpenter of Juniata, 8-3, in the first round and the team of Sadie Summer and Meredith Spegel from Messiah College, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.

The Greyhounds won their final home match of the 2004 season, defeating DeSales University, 7-2, in non-conference action at Hoffman Courts. Moravian swept the doubles action with victories by the duos of seniors Becky Deringer and Jillian Iacovelli, senior Julie Anderson and junior Katie Cooke and sophomores Courtney Hall and Margo Kokolus. The Greyhounds also earned four straight sets wins in singles action with victories by senior Marion Berry and freshmen Leah Bradshaw, Brittany Popaca and Jennel Yelito.

At Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference Championship – Lost 5-4

The Elizabethtown College women’s tennis team won four of six singles matches to earn a 5-4 victory over Moravian College in the 2004 Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship match. The Greyhounds, who had won the last four conference tournament titles and have played in the conference championship match every year since 1994, fall to 11-3 overall while the Blue Jays improve to 13-0. Moravian had a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition with victories by the teams of seniors Becky Deringer and Jillian Iacovelli and freshman Leah Bradshaw and junior Nicole Gruber. However, the Greyhounds won just two singles matches with straight sets wins by senior Marion Berry and freshman Brittany Popaca.

Vs. Susquehanna University in Commonwealth Conference Semifinals – Won 6-3

Second seeded Moravian advanced to the conference championship match for the 11th straight year with a 6-3 victory over third seed Susquehanna University in a Commonwealth Conference Semifinal match at Hoffman Courts. The Greyhounds led 2-1 after doubles with victories by the teams of seniors Becky Deringer and Jillian Iacovelli at first doubles and freshman Leah Bradshaw and junior Nicole Gruber at third doubles. Bradshaw and freshman Brittany Popaca had straight sets wins at fifth and sixth singles while senior Marion Berry fell in straight sets at second singles, giving the Greyhounds a 4-2 lead. Deringer would earn the winning point with a three-set win at first singles. Iacovelli fell in three sets at fourth singles while Gruber finished the final match with a three-set victory at third singles. Moravian now advances to play at top-seeded Elizabethtown College, a 9-0 winner over fourth seeded Lebanon Valley College in the other semifinal match, on Saturday for the first-ever Commonwealth Conference Championship.

At Elizabethtown College – Lost 6-3

Moravian had its bid for an undefeated Commonwealth Conference season ended in the team's final conference match of the regular season, falling to host Elizabethtown College, 6-3, in a match that was started outdoors before moving inside because of rain. The Greyhounds had just three singles wins with a straight sets victory by freshman Brittany Popaca and a pair of three-set wins by senior Marion Berry and junior Nicole Gruber.

Moravian had its 22-match unbeaten streak snapped as the Greyhounds suffered their first loss of 2004, falling to Drew University, 5-4, in a non-conference match in Madison, New Jersey. Moravian won just one of three doubles contests to start the match with a victory from the team of junior Nicole Gruber and freshman Leah Bradshaw. The Greyhounds did capture three of the six singles contests with wins by Gruber in three sets and by senior Jillian Iacovelli and freshman Brittany Popaca in straight sets.

Moravian won two of three doubles contests to open the match with victories by the team of seniors Becky Deringer and Jillian Iacovelli and the duo of freshman Leah Bradshaw and junior Nicole Gruber. In singles action, Deringer, Gruber, Iacovelli, senior Marion Berry and freshman Brittany Popaca each has straight sets wins for the Greyhounds while Bradshaw needed three sets to remain unbeaten on the year for Moravian.

The shutout victory was the third this season for the Greyhounds. Moravian opened the match with doubles wins by the teams of seniors Becky Deringer and Jillian Iacovelli, sophomores Courtney Hall and Margo Kokolus and senior Julie Anderson and junior Katie Cooke. In single action, Deringer earned a straight sets victory as did juniors Nicole Gruber and Rachel Vannatta and freshmen Leah Bradshaw, Brittany Popaca and Jennel Yelito.

The Greyhounds opened the match with a sweep of the three doubles contests with victories by the tandems of seniors Becky Deringer and Jillian Iacovelli, sophomores Courtney Hall and Margo Kokolus and freshmen Brittany Popaca and Jennel Yelito. Moravian then won five of six singles matches with straight sets wins by Iacovelli and Popaca. Deringer, junior Nicole Gruber and freshman Leah Bradshaw needed three sets for their wins.

The Greyhounds opened the match by sweeping the three doubles contests with victories by the teams of seniors Becky Deringer and Jillian Iacovelli, senior Marion Berry and junior Nicole Gruber and freshmen Leah Bradshaw and Brittany Popaca. Deringer, Berry, Gruber, Bradshaw and Popaca all had straight sets victories in singles action with junior Katie Cooke earning a three-set victory to complete the sweep.

The 2004 Moravian College women’s tennis team opened its season with a 7-2 victory at Eastern University in non-conference action. The Greyhounds have now won 16 consecutive matches dating back to last season. Moravian won just one doubles match with a victory at third doubles by senior Julie Anderson and junior Katie Cooke. The Greyhounds then swept the singles matches with straight set victories from Anderson, Cooke, senior Marion Berry and junior Nicole Gruber . Junior Sara Weller and senior Jillian Iacovelli needed three sets to earn their first victories of the year.
