2004-05 Review

The 2004 Moravian College women’s tennis team continued to dominate opponents as the Greyhounds made it to their fifth straight Conference Team Championship only falling short to Elizabethtown College in a 5-4 loss. The Greyhounds overall fall record was 13-3 under the direction of head coach Dawn Benner, and the team was 6-1 in Commonwealth Conference action. Moravian had a 0-1 mark in spring action to finish at 13-4.

Senior Becky Deringer (Allentown ,PA/Dieruff HS) posted a 11-6 singles record and 9-5 at first singles Deringer was named Commonwealth Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year. Deringer teamed up with Jillian Iacovelli (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) in recording a 15-3 doubles record with a 12-2 first doubles record. Iacovelli posted an 8-5 singles record with a 6-4 fourth singles record.

Senior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) had a 10-3 record at second singles and was named to the All-Conference First Team. She teamed with junior Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS) for an 0-2 doubles record and Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS) for an 0-1 doubles record. Gruber made it to the All-Conference Second Team posting a 15-4 singles record and 9-3 at third singles for the Hounds. Cooke had a 4-1 singles record and 4-0 at fourth singles.

Freshmen Brittany Popaca (Lavallette, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach HS) won the 2004 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championship in the sixth singles flight. She was 14-0 in singles action during the season, including 8-0 at sixth singles.

Cooke and senior Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) paired for a 6-2 overall doubles record. Sophomores Courtney Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico HS) and Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) had a 6-4 doubles record with 5-4 at second doubles. Gruber paired with freshman Leah Bradshaw (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) for a 8-1 doubles record and 7-1 at third doubles. Gruber also paired with junior Sara Weller (Gladstone, NJ/Bernards HS) for a 2-1 overall doubles record.

Popaca and Jennel Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) put up a 2-0 third doubles record. Popaca also paired with Bradshaw for a 1-0 doubles record. Weller and freshman Lindsey Hopper (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex HS) had a 1-0 third doubles record.

Bradshaw had a 12-5 singles record and 7-4 at fifth singles. Yelito had a 5-0 singles record, while Weller was 3-0 in singles. Anderson and junior Rachel Vannatta (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) each was 1-0 in singles. Sophomores Kristen Smith (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and Erin Hinton (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) also contributed to the team this season.

The Greyhounds had eight student-athletes named to the 2004 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Fall Academic Honor Roll including Anderson, Berry, Deringer, Gruber, Hall, Kokolus, Smith, and Weller.
