2005-06 Review

The 2005 Moravian College women’s tennis team continued to dominate opponents as the Greyhounds made it to their sixth straight Commonwealth Conference Team Championship match and their 12th straight conference title match only falling short to Elizabethtown College in a 8-1 loss.

The Greyhounds overall fall record was 15-2 under the direction of head coach Dawn Benner, and the team was 5-1 in Commonwealth Conference action. Moravian also had its best-ever showing in the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championships with four singles players and two doubles teams reaching the finals in their flights.

Senior Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS) was named to the All-Conference Second Team. She posted a 16-2 singles record and 11-1 at sixth singles. Cooke teamed up with freshman Kelly Gerbino (Easton, PA/Easton) in recording a 4-0 third doubles record. Gerbino has an 0-1 slate at sixth singles.

Senior Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS) was named to the 2005 Commonwealth All-Conference First Team. She had an 11-6 record at singles with a 9-5 second singles record. She teamed with sophomore Leah Bradshaw (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) for a 13-7 doubles record and a 10-2 record at second doubles. Bradshaw had a 2-1 fifth singles mark this season.

Sophomore Brittany Popaca (Lavallette, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach HS), who was named to the All-Conference Second Team, was 18-1 in singles action with an undefeated 16-0 record at third singles. Her only loss was in the finals of the 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championship. Popaca teamed up with sophomore Jennel Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) for a 3-1 record in doubles action. In singles action, Yelito put up a record of 14-3, 8-2 at fifth singles.

Freshman Dyana Swan (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) played first singles this year. She had a 2-10 record. Swan partnered up with fellow freshman MaryKate Kelly (Beach Haven, NJ/Southern Regional HS). The duo was 6-9 in doubles action, 3-8 at first doubles. Kelly won the 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championship in the fourth singles flight. She was 17-3 in singles action during the season, including 12-1 at fourth singles.

Juniors Courtney Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico HS) and Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) had a 11-7 doubles record with 9-3 at third doubles. Kokolus put up a 4-0 singles record while Hall was 0-1 in singles action. Sophomore Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS) was 4-2 in singles action this season.

Junior Kristen Smith (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS), and freshmen Allison Davis (Buck Hills Falls, PA/Pocono Mountain East HS), Taylor Moran (Tannersville, PA/Pocono Mountain East HS), and Leah Peyre-Ferry (Salem, NJ/Salem HS) also contributed to the team this season.

The Greyhounds had eight student-athletes named to the 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Fall Academic Honor Roll including Cooke, Gruber, Smith, Kokolus, Bradshaw, Yelito, Hall, and Angstadt.
