The
2006-07 Moravian College women’s tennis team continued to dominate
opponents as the Greyhounds made it to their seventh straight Commonwealth
Conference Team Championship match and their 12th straight conference
title match coming out with a 5-4 win over top seeded Elizabethtown. The
Greyhounds were also able to make it to the NCAA Division III National
Championship Tournament first round, falling to Johns Hopkins University,
5-0.
The Greyhounds overall record was 14-3 under the direction of head coach
Dawn Ketterman-Benner, and the team was 5-1 in Commonwealth
Conference action. Moravian also had one of its best-ever showing in the
Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championships
with four singles players and two doubles teams reaching the finals in
their flights.
Leading the Greyhounds was sophomore MaryKate Kelly (Beach Haven,
NJ/Southern Regional HS) who had an overall record of 18-4 including
a fourth singles record of 13-2. Kelly teamed up with
junior Brittany Popaca (Lavallette, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach HS)
in doubles and had an overall record of 12-9 on the season. Popaca
completed a singles record of 14-5 for the year. Kelly
won the 2006 MASCAC Fourth Singles Championship while Popaca
captured the 2006 MASCAC Third Singles title.
Junior Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS) had
an overall record of 17-1 including a 13-1 record at sixth singles, and
Angstadt captured the 2006 MASCAC Sixth Singles Championship.
Senior Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS), who
was named to the Commonwealth Conference Tennis All-Conference First Team,
had a singles record of 9-8, including a 7-6 record at first singles.
Kokolus entered doubles with teammate senior Courtney
Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico HS) and completed a 6-10 overall record.
Hall had a singles record of 1-5.
Sophomore Dyana Swan (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS),
who was also named to the Commonwealth Conference Tennis All-Conference
First Team, completed an overall singles record of 10-7, including a 9-7
record at second singles. Swan teamed up with sophomore
Kelly Gerbino (Easton, PA/Easton HS) in doubles, and
came out with an overall record of 10-2. Gerbino had a singles record
of 1-1 on the year.
Junior
Jennel Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) contributed an
overall singles record of 14-6, including a 12-3 record at fifth singles.
Junior Lindsey Hopper (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex HS) completed
a 2-0 singles record this season, and teamed up with Hall
for a 3-1 doubles record as well.
Senior Kristin Smith (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS),
sophomores Juliana Haney (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS),
and Monique Shetayh (Walnutport, PA/Northampton HS),
and freshmen Deanna Discepola (Millville, NJ/Millville HS),
and Lauren Ertel (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS), also
contributed to the team this season.
Moravian had seven players named to the 2007 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate
Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll including Angstadt,
Yelito, Kokolus, Hall,
Smith, Hopper and Swan.
Coach Ketterman-Benner looks to return all but two of
her players, and is looking to win the first-ever Landmark Conference
Team Championship title next year when the Greyhounds begin competition
in the new conference.
Angstadt, Yelito, Kokolus, Hall, Smith, Hopper, and
Swan were named to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate
Athletic Corporation Fall Academic Honor Roll.
