2001-02 Review

The Moravian College women's indoor track & field team captured its seventh straight Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championship this winter while the outdoor squad won its tenth consecutive MAC title and tied for ninth at the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championships.

At the MAC Indoor Meet, freshman jumper and sprinter Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/ Bangor HS) was named the Women's Most Outstanding Performer while winning the long jump and triple jump and leading the Greyhounds squad at the meet. Moravian posted a team score of 147, 65 points ahead of second place Widener University.  Rotzell won the long jump with an Eastern College Athletic Conference qualifying leap of 5.29 meters (17 feet, 4 ¼ inches) and she captured the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying distance of 10.92 meters (35 feet, ten inches). Rotzell, who was Moravian's third straight Most Outstanding Performer, placed sixth in the 55 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 7.68 seconds. Senior Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic, PA/Riverside HS), who did not compete due to an ankle injury, had been the meet's Most Outstanding Performer the last two years.

The women's team had six other MAC Individual Champions with two relay squads taking first. Freshman Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) won the 800 meters in an ECAC qualifying time of 2:22.37 while senior Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin HS) captured first in the 5,000 meters in a MAC record time, an ECAC qualifying time and a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 17:50.90. Senior Sarah Shaneberger (Bethlehem, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) won the 20-lb weight throw with a toss of 12.62 meters (41 feet, five inches) while sophomore Christina Scherwin (Denmark) won the shot put with an MAC record, an ECAC qualifying standard and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance of 13.36 meters (43 feet, ten inches). The Greyhounds distance medley relay team of seniors Kim Jaick (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS), Erin Boyle (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy HS), Amanda Samok (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) and Shertzer captured first in a MAC record time and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 12:29.59. The 4x800-meter relay team of McGarvie, senior Jen Boberg (Lansford, PA/Panther Valley HS) and freshmen Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) and Megan Wise (North Wales, PA/North Penn HS) won with a MAC record time of 9:57.96.

Other Moravian finishers in the sprint events included senior Steph Horne (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) placing sixth in the 200 meters in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 27.33 seconds and second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.70 seconds, also a Moravian record and an ECAC qualifying time. Sophomore Nicole Sabaliauskas (Butler, NJ/Butler HS) was 18th in the 200 meters in 29.69 seconds and seventh in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 9.95 seconds. Freshman Ann Guzevich (Kenilworth, NJ/ David Brearley Regional HS) placed 12th in the 400 meters in 1:07.29 and she was 19th in the 200 meters at 29.70. Samok took fourth in the 400 meters in 1:03.37.

In addition to McGarvie in the 800 meters, Boyle was third in an ECAC qualifying time of 2:24.92 and Boberg was ninth in 2:28.57. Junior Jen Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS) placed tenth in 2:29.22 while senior Tiffany Catalino (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) was 13th in 2:35.62 and freshman Sarah Krebs (Palmerton, PA/ Palmerton HS) finished 14thin 2:35.85. Boyle placed second in the 1,500 meters with an ECAC qualifying time of 4:53.01 while Wagner was fifth in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:59.92 and Wise was sixth in an ECAC qualifying time of 5:00.14. Freshman Alison Stoyko (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) finished seventh in the 1,500 meters in 5:09.71 while sophomore Lauren Laviola (Jersey City, NJ/St. Dominic Academy HS) was tenth in 5:18.61 and Catalino in 12th at 5:20.21. Following Shertzer in the 5,000 meters were Jaick in second at 18:17.90 (an ECAC qualifying time), freshman Holly Bofinger (Warminster, PA/ William Tennent HS) in eighth at 19:09.58 and sophomore Angie Morgan (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) at tenth in 19:19.61.

Shaneberger placed second to Scherwin in the shot put with a toss of 12.05 meters (39 feet, 6 ½ inches), which qualified her for the ECAC Championships. Freshman Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was second to Shaneberger in the 20-lb weight throw with a distance of 11.80 meters (38 feet, 8 ¾ inches) and sophomore Alicia Fowler (Easton, PA/Easton HS) in fifth place at 11.15 meters (36 feet, 7 ½ meters). Sophomore Amanda Wynn (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) took third in the pole vault at 2.67 meters (eight feet, nine inches).

The Greyhounds had six student-athletes compete on the first day of the 2002 ECAC Championships hosted by Tufts University and the team was tied for 32nd. The Moravian distance medley relay earned Moravian its point with an eighth place finish in a time of 12:30.25, a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. The DMR team was made up of Boyle, Wagner, McGarvie and Wise. Horne placed second in her heat of the 55-meter hurdle preliminaries and moved into the finals with a top eight time of 8.54 seconds, just one-one hundredth off the school record she set at the MAC Championships. Rotzell placed 16th in the long jump with a leap of 4.83 meters (15 feet, 10 1/4 inches).

Moravian placed 20th of 51 schools that scored points at the 2002 ECAC Championships. Earning points for the Greyhounds on the second day of competition were Jaick with a second place finish in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:18.10, Boyle with a fifth place showing in the 1,500 meters in a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 4:41.87 and Horne with a sixth place finish in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.69 seconds, a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Other competitors from Moravian were Horne in the 200 meters, placing 31st in 27.74 seconds, Rotzell in the triple jump, finishing 10th with a distance of 10.94 meters (35 feet, 10 3.4 inches), Wagner in the 1,500 meters, placing 24th with a time of 4:58.47, McGarvie in the 800 meters, finishing 19th with a time of 2:23.26 and Wise in the 3,000 meters, placing 22nd in 10:48.12.

The Greyhounds tied for 51st of 59 schools that scored points at the 2002 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University. Moravian received its two points from the distance medley relay team of Boyle, Wolfsberger, Wagner and McGarvie, which earned All-American honors with a seventh place finish in a time of 12:16.46. It is the second straight year that Moravian's distance medley relay team has received All-American accolades. The Greyhounds' only other competitor was Horne, who placed sixth in her heat of the 55-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 9.26 seconds.

At the 2002 MAC Outdoor Meet, Shertzer captured first place in the 10,000 meters for the fourth time on the first day of the competition hosted by Susquehanna University.  Shertzer won her fourth gold medal in the event with a time 39:17.76. Wagner was second in 39:45.00 while freshman Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) was fourth in 41:08.67, Morgan was fifth in 42:14.49 and Bofinger was eighth in 43:37.39. After the first four events of the heptathlon, Sabaliauskas was in second place with a total of 1,961 points, just 14 points out of first place. Guzevich was in sixth place with 1,344 points.

The Greyhounds had four individual champions on the second day of competition.  Shertzer won her second MAC title of the meet, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase race in a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 11:25.90. Scherwin won the shot put in a MAC record distance of 13.28 meters (43 feet, seven inches), also a NCAA provisional qualifying distance. Rotzell was first in the triple jump with a Moravian record, a MAC record and NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 11.65 meters (38 feet, 2 3/4 inches) while Shaneberger took first in the discus with a toss of 38.91 meters (127 feet, eight inches). Shaneberger also took second in the shot at 12.66 meters (41 feet, 6 1/2 inches), a NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Senior Carrie McCaffery (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) was fourth in the discus at 33.71 meters (110 feet, seven inches) and fourth in the shot at 11.04 meters (36 feet, 2 3/4 inches). Fowler was seventh in the discus with a throw of 32.90 meters (107 feet, 11 inches) while Anderson took tenth in 30.04 meters (98 feet, seven inches).  Wynn placed fourth in the pole vault at 2.88 meters (nine feet, 5 1/4 inches).

In other track events, Catalino was third in the steeplechase with a time of 12:19.22 while Stoyko was ninth in 12:54.78. In trial events, Boyle was first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.90. Wolfsberger was third in 2:23.87 and qualified for the finals.  Boberg was 15th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.61 while Smith was 16th in 2:34.97 and Sarah Krebs was 22nd in 2:44.49. Horne was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.51 seconds and she was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.22. Horne qualifies for the finals in both events. Samok qualified for the finals of the 400 meters after finishing seventh in the qualifying with a time of 1:03.02.  Rotzell qualified for the finals of the 100 meters with a fifth place finish in the 100 meters in 12.69 seconds and she took 14th in the 200-meter trials in 26.62 seconds. In the heptathlon, Sabaliauskas finished second with 3,264 points while Guzevich was sixth with 2,414 points.

Moravian captured its tenth straight MAC Championship, defeating runner-up and Susquehanna University by 103 points (208 to 105). The Greyhounds had two individual champions on the third day with both student-athletes winning their second titles. Scherwin captured the javelin with a MAC record and NCAA Division III automatic qualifying distance of 50.19 meters (164 feet, eight inches) while Shaneberger won the hammer throw with a MAC record toss of 40.67 meters (133 feet, five inches). McCaffery tied Shaneberger in distance in the hammer throw but took more attempts to get 40.67 meters so she placed second. McCaffery was also fifth in the javelin with a toss of 38.04 meters (124 feet, ten inches) while senior Jennifer Lohn (Media, PA/Penncrest HS) placed second in the javelin with a NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 38.79 meters (127 feet, three inches). Anderson took sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 31.49 meters (103 feet, four inches) while Fowler was seventh at 30.20 meters (99 feet, one inch). Rotzell placed second in the long jump at 5.19 meters (17 feet, 1/2 inch) while Sabaliauskas was tenth at 4.54 meters (14 feet, 10 3/4 inches).

In track events on the final day, Boyle placed second in the 1,500 meters in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:39.23 while Wolfsberger was third with a provisional qualifying time of 4:42.47. Wolfsberger also took third in the finals of the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.88 while Boyle was sixth in 2:22.34. Other Moravian finishers in the 1,500 meters included Jaick in eighth place with a time of 4:58.66, Catalino in ninth at 5:08.47 and sophomore Robin Edward (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge HS) in 13th at 5:17.86. Mullins placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:44.49 while Jaick was ninth in 19:35.21. Sophomore Jen Brief (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson HS) placed 14th in 20:34.20 and freshman Meghan Krebs (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) was 14th in 21:05.29. Horne was third in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.90 seconds and she placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdle finals at 1:10.48. Rotzell was sixth in the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 12.91 while Samok took eight in the 400-meter finals with a time of 1:03.89. Moravian's 4x400-meter relay team of Horne, Samok, Meghan Krebs and Boberg placed eighth in a time of 4:19.48.

Jaick placed 17th in the finals of the 10,000 meters the first day of competition at the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championships hosted by Macalester College. Jaick ran a time of 37:13.22. Boyle and both competed in the trials of the 1,500 meters.  Boyle ran a time of 4:44.61 and placed eighth in the first heat of the trials. Her time moved her into championship race. Wolfsberger posted a time of 4:44.73 and placed second in the second preliminary heat to move into championship race.

Shertzer placed seventh in the inaugural 3,000-meter steeplechase on the second day of the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championships. Shertzer ran a time of 11:04.25 and earned All-American honors for the second time in her career with her top eight finish.

Scherwin became Moravian's seventh Individual National Champion and the first in a field event after capturing first place in the javelin throw at the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championships. Moravian tied for ninth place out of 78 teams that scored points in their top finish since 1994. Scherwin, who is the third female in Moravian history to win a national championship, had a winning throw of 51.69 meters (169 feet, seven inches). Lohn also competed in the javelin and placed fifth in the second flight with a throw of 36.52 meters (119 feet, 10 inches). Scherwin also competed in the shot put on in the final day of the competition and placed ninth in the second flight with a toss of 13.00 meters (42 feet, 8 inches). In other field events, Rotzell took ninth place in the second flight of the triple jump with a distance of 11.35 meters (37 feet, 3 inches) in her first trip to the national meet. On the track, Boyle and Wolfsberger competed in the finals of the 1,500 meters. Wolfsberger placed second with a time of 4:36.78 to earn All-America accolades while Boyle was 11th with a time of 4:47.48. Wolfsberger's runner-up finish was her third in the 1,500 meters over the last three years and her fifth overall in NCAA track & field and cross country competition.
