At Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament Second
Day Results
Junior Corinne Kleinsmith and sophomore Jen Genevese from Moravian
College, who were the top seeded doubles team at this weekend's Middle
Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament, fell in the championship
match to the number three seed Lisa Dumansky and Elizabeth Osche
for Juniata College, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Kleinsmith and Genevese
had defeated Deanna Ng and Jessica Spier from Messiah College in the
semifinals, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the championship match. Kleinsmith
was named to the MAC Commonwealth All-Star Team while head coach Dawn
Ketterman-Benner was named the MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year for
the second straight season.
At Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament First
Day Results
Junior Corinne Kleinsmith and sophomore Jen Genevese from Moravian
College are the top-seeded doubles team in the 2000 Middle Atlantic
Conference Individual Championship and the duo won to matches on Friday
to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Kleinsmith and Genevese
defeated the team of Heather Straub and Heidi von Schwelder from Lycoming
College, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round after a first round bye. They
then defeated Kelly Moritz and Carley Kellet from Susquehanna in the
quarterfinals, 6-0, 7-5. Moravian’s other doubles tandem
of junior Lacey Leverberg and sophomore Christie Sieger were seeded
sixth in the tournament and also had a first round bye. In the
second round, the pair defeated Melissa Muller and Sasha Fureman from
Elizabethtown College, 6-0, 6-1 before falling to number three seed
Lisa Dumansky and Elizabeth Osche of Juniata College, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Moravian
singles competitors seniors Courtney Rice and Autumn Zander each lost
in the first round with Rice losing to Victoria Hilosky of Juniata,
6-2, 6-1 and Zander losing to Jenna Olas of Allentown College, 7-5,
6-1. The semifinals and finals of the MAC Individual Tournament
will continue at Lebanon Valley College on Saturday beginning at 9:00
a.m.
Vs. Muhlenberg College Rescheduled for April 24th, 2001
The Greyhounds match with Muhlenberg College has been rescheduled
due to rain in the Lehigh Valley. The match will played on Tuesday,
April 24th at Muhlenberg.
Vs. Muhlenberg College Postponed until October 18th
The Greyhounds match with Muhlenberg College has been postponed until
Wednesday, October 18th due to rain in the Lehigh Valley.
At King's College Cancelled
The Greyhounds match with King's College has been cancelled for the
season.
At Messiah College Won 5-4 MAC Championship
For the fourth time in five years, the Greyhounds have captured the
Middle Atlantic Conference team title, this time with a 5-4 victory
over Messiah College. Sophomore Jill Simms won at sixth singles
to clinch the championship. Also winning in singles were sophomores
Jen Genevese and Christie Sieger. Moravian also had two doubles
wins from the team of junior Corinne Kleinsmith and Genevese and the
tandem of Sieger and junior Lacey Leverberg.
At Lycoming College Won 5-4 MAC
Semifinals
For the seventh straight season, the Moravian College women’s
tennis team is headed to the championship match of the Middle Atlantic
Conference playoffs after the second-seeded Greyhounds of the Commonwealth
League upset top-seeded and undefeated Lycoming College of the Freedom
League, 5-4, in a semifinal match at Lycoming. Moravian, now
11-2 on the season, will travel to Messiah College for the MAC Championship
match on Saturday, October 14th at 1:00 p.m. Messiah, the regular
season MAC Commonwealth Champion, defeated the University of Scranton,
5-4, to advance to the title match. The Greyhounds have been
in the title match every year since 1994 and won the championship in
1996, 1997 & 1998. Lycoming suffers its first loss of the
year in the match, falling to 10-1. Moravian capture four singles
matches with wins from juniors Lacey Leverberg at the fourth position
and Katie Copf at fifth singles and sophomores Jen Genevese at the
number two spot and Jillian Simms in the sixth spot. The Greyhounds
clinched the match with a doubles victory from Leverberg and sophomore
Christie Sieger at second doubles. Since the beginning of the
1994 season, Moravian has posted 100-11 record with four Commonwealth
titles in addition to the three MAC Championships.
At Albright College Won 8-1
Junior Lacey Leverberg and sophomores Jen Genevese, Christie Sieger
and Jill Simms each had wins in singles and doubles action to lead
the Moravian College women’s tennis team to a 8-1 victory over
Albright College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action. Moravian
also had a singles win from sophomore Missy Graeff and doubles victories
from juniors Corinne Kleinsmith and Julie Simms.
At Wilkes University Won 9-0
The Greyhounds won their third straight match with a 9-0 victory over
Wilkes University in Middle Atlantic Conference action. Winning
in singles for Moravian were seniors Courtney Rice and Autumn Zander,
sophomores Missy Graeff and Lea Ziegler and freshmen Lauren Castagna
and Petia Damianova. The same six players also earned doubles
wins for the Greyhounds.
At Lebanon Valley College Won 8-1
With five wins in singles action and a sweep in doubles play, Moravian
earned its seventh straight berth to the Middle Atlantic Conference
playoffs with an 8-1 victory over Lebanon Valley College in MAC Commonwealth
action. The win lifts the Greyhounds to 8-2 on the season and
5-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. The victory also guarantees the
Greyhounds at least a second place tie with Juniata College and Moravian
owns the tiebreaker. Winning in singles for the Greyhounds were
juniors Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg and sophomores Jen Genevese,
Christie Sieger and Missy Graeff. Genevese and junior Corinne
Kleinsmith earned a doubles win as did Sieger and Leverberg and the
sister duo of sophomore Jill and junior Julie Simms.
Vs. Allentown College Postponed
Moravian had its match with Allentown College postponed due to rain
in the Lehigh Valley. No make-up date has been set at this time.
At Juniata College Won 9-0
The Greyhounds kept their Middle Atlantic Conference playoff chances
alive with a 9-0 victory over Juniata College in MAC Commonwealth action. Juniors
Corinne Kleinsmith, Lacey Leverberg and Katie Copf each earned singles
and doubles wins in the match as did sophomores Jen Genevese and Christie
Sieger. Sophomore Missy Graeff won in singles while senior Courtney
Rice won in doubles action.
At King's College Postponed until October 16th
Moravian had its match with King's College postponed to Monday, October
16th due to long trips rescheduled for each team this week.
Vs. Messiah College Lost 7-2
The Messiah College womens tennis team handed Moravian squad
their first loss in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action
in over three years with a 7-2 victory Saturday. The loss drops
Moravian to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. Moravians
last MAC Commonwealth loss was on September 13, 1997 to Juniata College,
5-4. Winning in the match for the Greyhounds were sophomore Missy
Graeff in singles action and junior Corinne Kleinsmith and sophomore
Jen Genevese in double play.
At Elizabethtown College Won 7-2
Juniors Corinne Kleinsmith and Lacey Leverberg and sophomores Jen
Genevese and Jill Simms each earned singles and doubles wins to lift
Moravian to 7-2 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth
Conference action. Junior Katie Copf also had a singles victory
for the Greyhounds while classmate Julie Simms teamed with her sister
Jill for a doubles win.
Vs. University of Scranton Match Suspended
The Moravian versus the University of Scranton tennis match was suspended
after the doubles matches due to rain. Scranton was leading 2-1
at the time. The match has yet to be rescheduled.
At Juniata College Postponed until October 4th
Due to the heavy rain in Central Pennsylvania, the Greyhounds match
at Juniata College was postponed until October 4th.
Vs. Drew University Won 7-2
Moravian jumped right back on the winning track after losing for the
first time in three years in its last match with a 7-2 victory over
Drew University in Middle Atlantic Conference action. Sophomore
Christie Sieger led the charge for the Greyhounds with wins in singles
and doubles action. Moravian swept the six singles matches with
wins from Sieger, juniors Corinne Kleinsmith, Lacey Leverberg and Katie
Copf and sophomores Jen Genevese and Jill Simms. Sieger teammed
with sophomore Missy Graeff for the lone double victory in the match.
At Albright College Postponed until October 10th
Due to the heavy rain in the Lehigh Valley and Berks County, the Greyhounds
match at Albright College was postponed until October 10th.
Vs. Franklin & Marshall College Lost 8-1
For the first time since September 13, 1997, the Greyhounds were on
the losing end of a regular season match, falling to Centennial Conference
powerhouse Franklin & Marshall College, 8-1, in a match that lasted
over four hours. Junior Corinne Kleinsmith had the only singles
victory for the Greyhounds.
At Kutztown University Won 7-2
Sophomores Christie Sieger and Jill Simms each had singles and doubles
wins to lift Moravian to a 7-2 victory over NCAA Division II Kutztown
University of PA. Juniors Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg each
had singles wins while juniors Corinne Kleinsmith and Julie Simms and
sophomores Jen Genevese and Missy Graeff each earned doubles victories.
At Widener University Won 8-1
Sophomores Jen Genevese, Christie Sieger and Jill Simms earned singles
and doubles wins to lead Moravian to a 8-1 victory over Widener University
in MAC Commonwealth action. The Greyhounds extended their regular
season winning streak to 45 with the win. Juniors Katie Copf
and Lacey Leverberg each had singles wins in the match while juniors
Corinne Kleinsmith and Julie Simms and sophomore Missy Graeff each
had doubles wins.
Vs. Susquehanna University Won 7-2
Sophomores Jen Genevese and Jill Simms earned singles and doubles
wins to lead Moravian to a 7-2 victory over Susquehanna University
in MAC Commonwealth action. Moravian won its 44th consecutive
regular season victory. Juniors Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg
also won in singles as did sophomore Christie Sieger. Genevese
and junior Corinne Kleinsmith won their doubles match as did the Simms
sisters, Jill and junior Julie.
At Eastern College Won 9-0
The Greyhounds finally opened their 2000 season and the squad earned
a 7-0 win over Eastern College. Moravian has now won 43 consecutive
regular season matches since a loss on loss to Juniata College on September
13, 1997. Moravian swept through the match, winning all nine
contests in pro sets. Senior Courtney Rice, juniors Corinne Kleinsmith
and Katie Copf and sophomores Jen Genevese, Christie Sieger and Jill
Simms earned victories in singles action. Rice teamed with fellow senior
Autumn Zander for a win at second doubles while Sieger played with
sophomore Missy Graeff for a win at first doubles. Simms paired with
her sister, junior Julie Simms for the win at third doubles.
At Cedar Crest College Cancelled
The Greyhounds first match of the 2000 season was cancelled due to
rain showers and storms in the Allentown area. The match will
not be rescheduled.
