Vs. East Stroudsburg University – Won 7-2

In Moravian's only match of the spring season, the Greyhounds defeated NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg University, 7-2. Moravian had singles victories from junior Jenn Genevese, sophomore Lauren Castagna and freshmen Becky Deringer, Jenn Keller and Elizabeth Schiffmann. The Greyhounds also had doubles victories from the teams of Genevese and Deringer and Keller and freshman Jillian Iacovelli.

At 2001 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament at Lebanon Valley College – Results

Moravian senior Corinne Kleinsmith and junior Jenn Genevese, seeded second in the tournament, won the 2001 Middle Atlantic Conference Doubles Championship with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over top seed and defending champion Lisa Dumansky and Liz Osche of Juniata College.

The duo, who finish the season with a 15-2 record, earned a spot in the finals with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over #4 seed Maggie Grezlak and Caitlan Wyble from FDU-Madison, one of two teams to beat Kleinsmith & Genevese this season.

For Kleinsmith, it is the second MAC Double Championship of her career after she won the 1998 title with Marnie Heller as the number three seed.

At 2001 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament at Lebanon Valley College – Results

Moravian sent six players to the 2001 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament and each player won at least one match before being knocked out of the tournament.  In singles action, freshman Becky Deringer defeated Sasha Fureman of Elizabethtown College, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before falling to #4 seed Erin Michalisin from the University of Scranton, 6-0, 6-0.  The loss was Deringer's first of the season in her final match.  Also in singles play, senior Katie Copf defeated Erin Thompson of Elizabethtown, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 before falling to #6 seed Whitney Bull of Wilkes University, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.  In doubles action, the Moravian team of seniors Julie Simms and Lacey Leverberg defeated Loren Minutoli and Jill Tuhan of Widener University, 6-1, 6-0 before falling to top seed Lisa Dumansky and Liz Osche of Juniata College, 6-0, 6-0.  Moravian's other doubles team of senior Corinne Kleinsmith and junior Jenn Genevese was seeded second in the tournament and had a first round bye.  In the second round, Kleinsmith & Genevese defeated Kelly Moritz and Devon Gross from Susquehanna University, 6-0, 6-1.  In the third round, Kleinsmith & Genevese defeated Katie King and Shelia Broadhead from the University of Scranton, 6-1, 6-2.  The duo will play #4 seed Maggie Grezlak and Caitlan Wyble from FDU-Madison in the semifinals on Saturday.

At FDU-Madison – Won 6-3

The Greyhounds earned their second consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference title and their fifth in the last six years with a 6-3 victory over FDU-Madison.  Moravian completed its second undefeated season in the last four years as well, finishing the season 16-0 as did the 1998 team.  Earning singles victories for the Greyhounds were junior Jenn Genevese, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1, and freshman Becky Deringer, 6-0, 6-3, who both finished the season with undefeated singles marks with Deringer at 14-0 and Genevese at 13-0.  Seniors Katie Copf, 6-0, 6-2, and Lacey Leverberg, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, and sophomore Lauren Castagna, 6-0, 6-1 also won in singles action while Castagna combined with senior Julie Simms for Moravian's only victory in doubles action., 8-5.

Vs. Marywood University – Won 6-2 ½

Moravian closed out its 2001 regular season with a 6-2 ½ non-conference victory over Marywood University in non-conference action.  The Greyhounds are 15-0 on the season and will play at FDU-Madison on Saturday, October 13th for the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship beginning at 12:00 p.m.  Moravian is the defending MAC Champion and looking for its fifth MAC title in the last six years.  Senior Lacey Leverberg, junior Missy Graeff and freshman Jenn Keller each earned singles wins while sophomores Jaime Diken and Petia Damianova each earned half a point.  The Greyhounds had two doubles wins from the teams of sophomore Lauren Castagna and Lea Ziegler and Graeff and freshman Julie Anderson.

Vs. Lycoming College – Won 7-2

Moravian, the defending Middle Atlantic Conference Champions, extended its winning streak to 20 consecutive matches and earned a berth in the MAC title match for the eighth straight year, defeating Lycoming College, 7-2, in the MAC Semifinals.  The Greyhounds improve to 14-0 this season and will travel to Madison, New Jersey on Saturday to battle FDU-Madison, the MAC Freedom Champions and owners of a 14-0 mark, for the MAC title.  FDU-Madison advanced to the final with a 6-3 victory over Susquehanna University.  Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match versus Lycoming with a sweep of the doubles action.  Senior Corinne Kleinsmith and junior Jenn Genevese won at first doubles, 8-4, while seniors Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg won by the same score at second doubles.  Senior Julie Simms and sophomore Lauren Castagna earned the victory at third doubles, 8-3, for Moravian.  Lycoming’s Cricket Temple won the first singles match to finish before freshman Becky Deringer and Castagna won singles matches to clinch the win.  Leverberg and Genevese also earned singles wins.

Vs. Albright College – Won 9-0

The Moravian College women’s tennis team finished the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth with a perfect 7-0 record with a 9-0 victory over Albright College.  Earning singles victories for Moravian were seniors Corinne Kleinsmith, Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg, junior Jenn Genevese, sophomore Lauren Castagna and freshman Becky Deringer.  Kleinsmith & Genevese combined for a victory as did Copf & Leverberg.  Castagna and senior Julie Simms for a third doubles win.

At Drew University – Won 7-2

Moravian won its final regular season road match of the season, defeating Drew University, 7-2, in non-conference match.  The Greyhounds have won 18 straight matches.  Moravian had single wins from seniors Corinne Kleinsmith and Lacey Leverberg, junior Jenn Genevese and freshmen Becky Deringer and Jenn Keller.  The Greyhounds had doubles victories from the teams of Kleinsmith and Genevese and Deringer and Leverberg.

At University of Scranton – Won 9-0

The Greyhounds earned their fourth shutout of the season, defeating the University of Scranton, 9-0, in non-conference action.  Moravian had singles victories from seniors Corinne Kleinsmith, Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg, juniors Jenn Genevese and Jill Simms and freshman Becky Deringer.  The Greyhounds had double wins from the groups of Kleinsmith and Genevese, Copf and Leverberg and the sister team of Jill Simms and senior Julie Simms.

At King's College – Won 7-2

Moravian extended its winning streak with a 7-2 non-conference win at King's College.  Winning in singles action were junior Missy Graeff, sophomores Petia Damianova and Jaime Diken and freshman Lindsay Corvino and Jenn Keller.  Keller teamed up with fellow freshman Jill Iacovelli for a win in doubles action while Graeff earned a doubles win with freshman Julie Anderson.

At Susquehanna University – Won 7-2

Moravian clinched its fifth Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Championship in eight years and the top seed in the upcoming MAC playoffs with a 7-2 victory at Susquehanna University.  Earning singles wins for the Greyhounds were senior Katie Copf, juniors Jenn Genevese and Jill Simms and freshman Becky Deringer.  Moravian swept the doubles action with victories from the teams of Genevese and senior Corinne Kleinsmith, Copf and senior Lacey Leverberg and Jill Simms and her sister senior Julie Simms. 

Vs. Widener University – Won 9-0

The Greyhounds stayed undefeated on the season with their third shutout of the year, defeating Widener University, 9-0, in MAC Commonwealth action.  Winning in singles for the Greyhounds were seniors Corinne Kleinsmith, Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg, junior Jenn Genevese, sophomore Lauren Castagna and freshman Becky Deringer.  Earning doubles wins were the teams of Kleinsmith & Genevese, Copf & Leverberg and the sister duo of junior Jill Simms and senior Julie Simms. 

Vs. Muhlenberg College – Won 6-3

Senior Lacey Leverberg and junior Jenn Genevese each earned straight-set singles victories and freshman Becky Deringer rallied for a three-set win to lift the Moravian College women’s tennis team to a 6-3 victory over rival Muhlenberg College in non-conference action.  The Greyhounds have won 13 straight matches dating back to last season while the Mules fall.  Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles action with wins by the teams of Genevese and senior Corinne Kleinsmith, Leverberg and senior Katie Copf and the duo of junior Jill Simms and senior Julie Simms.

At Messiah College – Won 5-4

Moravian stayed perfect on the season with a 5-4 victory over Messiah College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.  Moravian had singles wins from senior Lacey Leverberg, juniors Jenn Genevese and Jill Simms and freshman Becky Deringer in the match.  The Greyhounds also had a doubles win from the team of Genevese and senior Corinne Kleinsmith.

Vs. Elizabethtown College – Won 9-0

The Greyhounds earned their second consecutive shutout of the season and improved their winning streak to five straight this season and 13 consecutive victories overall with a 9-0 triumph over Elizabethtown College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.  Moravian had singles victories from seniors Corinne Kleinsmith, Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg, juniors Jenn Genevese and Jill Simms and freshman Becky Deringer.  The Greyhounds had double wins from the groups of Kleinsmith and Genevese, Copf and Leverberg and the sister team of Jill Simms and senior Julie Simms.

Vs. Lebanon Valley College – Won 9-0

Moravian earned its first shutout of the season and improved its winning streak to four straight this season and 12 consecutive victories overall with a 9-0 triumph over Lebanon Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.  Moravian had straight set singles victories from seniors Corinne Kleinsmith, Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg, juniors Jenn Genevese and Jill Simms and freshman Becky Deringer.  The Greyhounds had double wins from the groups of Kleinsmith and Genevese, Copf and Leverberg and the sister team of Jill Simms and senior Julie Simms.

Vs. Kutztown University – Won 8-1

The Greyhounds stayed undefeated in 2001 with an 8-1 victory over NCAA Division II Kutztown University in non-conference action.  Moravian had singles wins from seniors Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg, juniors Jenn Genevese and Jill Simms and freshman Becky Deringer.  Winning in doubles were the teams of senior Corinne Kleinsmith and Genevese; Copf and Leverberg and Jill Simms and senior Julie Simms.

At University of Scranton – Postponed

Moravian has had its match at the University of Scranton has been postponed.  The match has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 2nd at 3:30 p.m.

Vs. Juniata College – Won 7-2

Moravian won its second straight match and opened the 2001 MAC Commonwealth season with a 7-2 victory over Juniata College.  Moravian won five of the six singles matches with wins from seniors Katie Copf and Lacey Leverberg, juniors Jenn Genevese and Jill Simms and freshman Becky Deringer.  The Greyhounds also captured two of the three doubles matches with victories from the teams of Copf & Leverberg and the Simms sisters, Jill and senior Julie.

2At DeSales University – Won 7-2

The Greyhounds started their 2001 season with a 7-2 non-conference victory over DeSales University.  Moravian had singles wins from senior Katie Copf, junior Missy Graeff, sophomores Lauren Castagna and Jaime Diken and freshmen Becky Deringer and Jenn Keller.  Moravian also had a double win from the team of Keller and freshman Jill Iacovelli.

At Cabrini College – Canceled

The Greyhounds first match of the 2001 season was canceled due to rain showers starting in the middle of the match.  A make-up date has not been set at this time.
