2003 Review

The Moravian women’s tennis team continued to dominate opponents as the Greyhounds won their fourth straight and seventh MAC Team Championship in eight seasons this fall. Their overall record was 15-1. Moravian is currently on a 15 match winning streak that they hope to continue in the 2004 season.

Junior Becky Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) posted a 15-2 singles record and 11-1 at second singles. Deringer was named to the Commonwealth Conference First Team. Senior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) had a 14-3 singles record and 12-2 in first singles. Berry combined with junior Jill Iacovelli (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) in recording an 11-5 doubles record with an 8-4 second doubles record.

Berry was named to the Commonwealth Conference First Team. Iacovelli was 0-1 in sixth doubles. Senior Lauren Castagna (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) had a 14-4 singles record and 9-3 at third singles. Castagna and Deringer had a 16-3 doubles record together with a 12-3 first doubles record. Castagna was named to the Commonwealth Conference Second Team.

Sophomore Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS) posted a 14-4 singles record and a 9-3 record at third singles. Senior Petia Damianova (Haskovo, Bulgaria/ISM) had a singles record of 11-2 and 10-2 in fifth singles. Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) posted an 8-3 singles record and a 6-3 record in sixth singles.

Sophomore Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS) was 5-0 in singles, while sophomore Rachel Vannatta (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) had a 2-0 singles record and freshman Courtney Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico) was 1-0 in singles. Freshman Kristin Smith (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) was 1-1 in singles, while sophomore Sara Weller (Gladstone, NJ/Bernards) posted a 1-2 singles record.

Hall and freshman Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland) had a 6-0 doubles record with a 5-0 record at third doubles. Cooke and Damianova combine for a 3-2 record in third doubles. Cooke and Iacovelli combined for a 2-2 record in doubles. Damianova and Gruber had one win in second doubles.

The Greyhounds had seven student-athletes named to the 2003 Middle Atlantic Corporation Fall All-Academic Team including Deringer, Castagana, Berry, Anderson, Damianova, Gruber and Weller.
