At 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships hosted by DePauw (IN) University – Tied for 8th of 61    Moravian Individual Results       Complete Meet Results

Senior Anna Heim of the Moravian College women's indoor track & field team earned the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship in the pole vault with an NCAA meet record and NCAA Division III all-time best height of 4.16 meters (13 feet, 7 3/4 inches) on the second day of competition at the NCAA meet being hosted by DePauw (IN) University. Heim's ten points for her victory, moved Moravian into first place after six events with 19 points. The Greyhounds finished the meet tied for eighth of 61 teams scoring a point with The College of New Jersey. Wartburg College captured the team title with 33 points.

Heim, who was the runner-up in the pole vault in 2009 both indoors and outdoors, becomes Moravian's 11th NCAA Individual National Champion and the tenth from the track & field program. Heim is the first Greyhound female to win a national title since Christina Scherwin won back-to-back titles in the javelin in 2002 and 2003, and Heim is the fourth Moravian female to capture a national championship. She also earns All-America honors for the fifth time in seven trips to the NCAA Track & Field Championships.

Heim passed on the opening height of 3.46 meters before clearing 3.76 and 3.86 meters, the former NCAA Division III meet record, on her first attempt at each. There were five competitors left at 3.96 meters (12 feet, 11 3/4 inches), and Heim was the first and only competitor to clear the height, and she did it on her first attempt again.

Heim went on to clear 4.02 meters (13 feet, 2 1/4 inches), the first NCAA Division III female to clear the four-meter mark in an NCAA meet. Heim would also clear her first attempt at the winning height of 4.16 meters (13 feet, 7 3/4 inches), before attempting to become the first NCAA Division III female ever to reach 14 feet (4.27 meters) indoors. Heim was short of the bar on her first two attempts at 14 feet, but nearly made it on her third and final attempt, clipping the bar on her way down after appearing to have cleared the height.

Heim had the following quotes after winning her national championship. On Moravian's tradition in the pole vault - "We've been fortunate to have such a great coach like Mike Lawryk helping the program out. He has so involved in the sport - really loves pole vaulting. He had a complete check list for coach Walt (Wandall) to go through with me today, and it all worked out."

On her National Championship Meet experience - "I just enjoy being part of the meet with my teammates. I try not to think about what height I'm trying to make...I just concentrate on the things I can control, especially in regards to the runway and the speed with which I get to hit the vault."

On her goals for the 2010 outdoor season - "I really want to make 14 feet. That is the big goal for the outdoor season."

Moravian had one other competitor on the second day of competition with freshman Micah Leonard, pictured at left, participating in the triple jump. Leonard, who earned All-America honors on Friday in the long jump, was sixth in her flight and tenth of 14 overall at a distance of 11.32 meters (37 feet, 1 3/4 inches). Leonard missed the ninth and final qualifying spot for the finals by just two inches.
