Update 3: May 6, 2009
The H1N1 influenza outbreak continues to evolve, both in the U.S. and globally. In the U.S., the CDC today reported 642 laboratory confirmed cases in 41 states with two deaths (the most recent death being a woman in Texas). The CDC reported 850 additional probable cases, with a total of 44 states affected. As the CDC has monitored probable cases, they say that about 99% of them are ultimately laboratory confirmed.
However, even as the outbreak spreads throughout our nation, the CDC reports that, by and large, the severity of illness is comparable to seasonal flu. For this reason, the CDC is not recommending any extraordinary mitigation measures, beyond what is normally recommended for seasonal flu. Specifically, individuals with flu symptoms (described below) should remain at home. (Students at the College with flu symptoms should contact the Health Service at the number below.) Everyone should implement the prevention practices listed below.
At this time, we have no plans to cancel or alter any campus activities, class schedules, exam schedules, work schedules, commencement exercises, athletic events, or alumni reunion events. As of now, we anticipate that trips and travel courses will run as planned.
The H1N1 Flu committee will continue to review guidelines from the WHO, CDC, state, and local public health authorities, as well as the situation here at the College. The above recommendations may change in accordance with these guidelines. Please continue to monitor this website or the AMOS site for updates.
