Update 4: May 13, 2009
Although the novel H1N1 influenza outbreak continues to grow, both in the U.S. and globally, the actual number of laboratory-confirmed cases is still low. In most areas, these numbers are well below those seen during seasonal flu outbreaks. In terms of severity, the illness caused by the novel flu currently circulating appears to be relatively mild. As with seasonal flu, individuals with certain medical conditions may be at increased risk of more severe disease and complications. (More information about persons at risk for complications is available at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/identifyingpatients.htm).
Locally, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DoH) reported (Tuesday, May 12) 18 confirmed and 20 probable cases throughout the state, with the highest concentration in the southeast corner of the state. PA DoH reported two probable (no confirmed) cases in Lehigh County and no cases in Northampton County.
Neither the WHO nor the CDC recommends any extraordinary mitigation measures, beyond what is normally recommended for seasonal flu. Specifically, individuals with flu symptoms (described below) should remain at home. Students at the College with flu symptoms should follow the instructions, below, under “Seeking Help.” Everyone should implement the prevention practices listed below.
At this time, we have no plans to cancel or alter any campus activities, class schedules, exam schedules, work schedules, commencement exercises, athletic events, or alumni reunion events. As of now, we anticipate that trips and travel courses will run as planned. With respect to public gatherings (such as the commencement and baccalaureate service), the CDC recommends that, in communities where the novel H1N1 influenza virus is circulating, persons at increased risk of complications should consider staying away from such gatherings (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance/guidelines_colleges.htm).
The H1N1 Flu committee will continue to review guidelines from the WHO, CDC, state, and local public health authorities, as well as the situation here at the College. The above recommendations may change in accordance with these guidelines. Please continue to monitor this website or the AMOS site for updates.
