Moravian students participate in after-school program for area youth

(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)- Moravian College students are finding rewarding educational experiences by volunteering with the Lehigh Valley Summerbridge School After School program (LVS). The major focus of this after school program, centers on tutoring sessions, helping with homework, studying for tests, and working on projects on an individual basis with students. Sessions occur on a weekly schedule at each of the partner schools. LVS recruits student volunteers from local colleges to serve as tutors and Site Supervisors for 7 partner schools throughout the Lehigh Valley.

Moravian senior Pete Konstantopoulos supervises the site at Nitschmann Middle School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This year is his second as Site Supervisor for the after school program. He has also taught math and science in the summer session this year. Konstantopoulos is pursuing a degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics.

This semester, Brandy Stahler is Site Supervisor for Holy Infancy School in Bethlehem, She taught a hands-on ecology class with LVS last summer. She is a senior majoring in Biology and Secondary Education. Stahler attributes her preference to teach middle school after graduation to her phenomenal experiences as a Summerbridge teacher. "Of all the jobs that I have had over my twenty-one summers past, working at Summerbridge was the most difficult, rewarding and fun that I have ever had in a summer," she said.

Mike Venanzi supervises the tutoring site at Northeast Middle School in Bethlehem. He taught math with LVS last summer. Currently a senior at Moravian College, he is pursuing a degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics.

Moravian College alumni Jarred Weaver, Assistant Director of Lehigh Valley Summerbridge, has been with the LVS program since the fall of 1998. Presently he oversees the tutoring site at Shawnee Junior High School in Easton.
