(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) - Venezuelan vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Irene Farrera will perform in concert with her Trio on Wednesday, October 17 at 8:00 p.m. at Moravian College in Foy Hall. Earlier in the day, Farrera will present a workshop at 11:30 a.m., in Peter Hall on the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus in Historic Bethlehem.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Farrera grew up singing and playing the cuatro (a traditional, four-stringed guitar Immersed from early childhood in the music of her homeland, Farrera, who now resides in Eugene, Oregon., infuses a deep sense of tradition into her music, along with unmistakable Cuban and Caribbean flavors. Farrera introduces audiences to the richly diverse music of her homeland, from the Spanish influenced joropos of the Llanos to the Afro-Venezuelan drums of the coastal regions.
Farrera's newest release, "Soy de Ti" (Indigena Records) showcases her unique, percussive style and poetic songwriting. In concert, Farrera captivates audiences with the intricate drum patterns that emerge as she strums. "Latin music is about rhythm. There's lots of percussion, lots of drumming. When I sing, I hear those drums and I play them on my guitar" says Farrera.
The workshop and concert are open to the public. Admission to the workshop is $5. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, and children 12 and under. The concert is sponsored by the Moravian College Music Institute. For ticket information, call 610-861-1650.
