(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)- Moravian College participated in the Freedom Relay of the Lehigh Valley on Sunday, November 11. A private citizen of the Lehigh Valley organized the run through the city and residential streets of Bethlehem, Allentown, Hellertown, and Lower Saucon Township as a way to "Celebrate Freedom in America and to demonstrate Our Patriotism."
Participation in the Freedom Relay was open to all individuals in the
Lehigh Valley Community - whether as a direct participant by doing one of the legs in the relay or by just being present somewhere along the relay route. Each 'leg' of the relay was between 0.7 to 0.9 miles long and had one or two individuals leading that leg that carried an American flag that was passed from leg to leg.
Two legs of the relay were directly in the Moravian College area and were adopted by the residence hall staff. These were on streets north of the College at the corner of Main and Taurus Streets and concluded at the intersection of Main and West Locust Street. The other leg was at Main and West Locust Streets, and went down Main Street to Broad Street, then west to the intersection of Broad Street and 2nd Avenue.
Organizations, teams and individuals were encouraged to supply an individual runner or a group of runners for either or both of the two legs. Others were on Main Street in front of Comenius Hall cheering the runners on as the relay passed and the flag carriers were changed.
