Moravian College Names Instrumental Concerto Winners

Bethlehem, Pa., April 28, 2008— Pianist Christopher Wyatt ’10, and clarinetist Helen Smith ’09 were named winners of the Moravian College Instrumental Concerto Competition for the academic year 2008-09. Wyatt, from Belleville, N.J., was the winner of the Instrumental Concerto Competition for the College Orchestra.  Smith, from Belvidere, N.J., was the winner of the Instrumental Concerto Competition for the Wind Ensemble. Both instrumentalists will perform concerti with the respective ensembles during the academic year 2008-09.

Moravian College community orchestra and wind ensemble competitions include auditions consisting of a memorized movement from a concerto to be performed the following year.  Judges for the competition are the ensemble directors, Donald Spieth and James Barnes, director of instrumental music and chair of the Music Department.

During the first three inaugural years of the competition, each student receives a $100 gift certificate to the college bookstore. Funds for the certificates were provided by James Barnes.  The April 2007 concerti winners for the academic year 2007-08 were James Schultheis, classical guitar and orchestra, and Kyle Hummel, saxophone and wind ensemble.
