Bethlehem, Pa., May 12, 2008—Moravian College will host a special open house for high school students who are interested in exploring academic opportunities in the sciences. The open house will be held on Friday, May 16. Prospective students and their families will learn about Moravian’s wide array of science programs, speak with Moravian’s experienced admissions staff and current students; discuss the science programs with faculty; discover opportunities for academic research; and tour Moravian’s campus and facilities.
The day begins with registration, a faculty reception, and opening welcome from 9:00 to 9:40 a.m., in the Prosser Auditorium Lobby and Haupert Union Building Lounge. “The Natural Sciences in a Liberal-Arts Context” will be discussed until 10:00 a.m. in Prosser Auditorium.
Information sessions and department presentations will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 12: 25 p.m. in the Collier Hall of Science addressing various majors including biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, nursing, and physics. Sessions will be held for those interested in pre-professional fields of study including pre-dentistry, pre-medicine, pre-veterinary medicine, and engineering. Visitors will experience a variety of demonstrations and experiments for each of the major areas. For example, faculty members from the Chemistry Department will conduct demonstrations with the Ocean Optics spectrometers and faculty who teach biochemistry will show how to extract myoglobin from whale muscle.
Lunch will be held from 12:30-1:00 p.m. in the dining hall, Haupert Union Building. During the afternoon, tours of Main Street Campus will be conducted. Later, a general session will be held to explain the Student Opportunities for Academic Research (SOAR) program, the Honors program, and admission and financial aid.
