How to combine the study of the liberal arts and a specialized field—a major—most effectively is a challenge all colleges and students confront. The key to achieving this balance is the curriculum, the basic program of study. As a result of a long-term and intensive study of curricular issues by the Moravian faculty, first-year students entering the College in September 2000 began to undertake a new program of general education—called Learning in Common. The philosophical basis of Moravian’s curriculum is to provide students with the skills they will need most to compete in the global economic and cultural climate of the new century. The curriculum includes courses intended to sharpen students’ critical skills such as writing, computer competence, and the ability to approach academic subjects from a variety of disciplines.
