Academic Requirements

As early as the freshman year, students can begin fulfilling their other general education requirements. All students must achieve proficiency at least to the intermediate level of a foreign language. Courses in the quantitative reasoning category develop the student's ability to convert conceptual information into problems that can be solved using standard mathematical and geometric tools, to create appropriate pictorial and graphical representation of data, to use a wide variety of technologies as tools for quantitative and data analysis, and to write and interpret the results of quantifiable problems. As with writing, there are quantitative aspects to many subjects, and the subject matter of courses that meet the quantitative reasoning requirement may be drawn from an array of different fields. The science lab requirement involves both theoretical and experimental learning in the natural sciences. Students may be exempted from taking any of these courses by passing a proficiency exam and obtaining the appropriate faculty approval.
