Name: Andrew Abraham
Honors in: Physics
Hometown: Bath, PA
Major(s): Physics, Economics
Title of project: The Crystallite Size Distribution in 2-D Beds of Randomly Close-Packed, Binary Beads
Abstract or brief description: Basically I am trying to use granular physics to describe a problem in thermal physics. Specifically, this study should help scientists and engineers better understand the properties of metal alloys. This would eventually lead to better, stronger, and lighter metals for various applications.
How did you get interested in your topic? I did a research project at Lehigh University over the summer. I was introduced to the problem then, and I decided to investigate it further in my honors work.
Do you intend to research your topic further, if so, how? I will be attending Lehigh U. for graduate work (Ph.D. in physics) and may be working with the professor who is developing this theory. We shall see.
How did you benefit academically by conducting research/ participating in honors? I developed a good idea concerning scientific research and what it is all about. I developed my problem solving skills and a sense of perseverance.
How has the department (or faculty advisor) in which you studied prepared you for the future? I have learned a great deal about the scientific method and its implementation.
What advice do you have for other students interested in honors? Honors is very tough, but rewarding. If you are interested in pursuing research in a specific field... go for it!
